In Modern English

He is from Amasya. He is the son of Abdülkerîm Çelebi. Having studied under the scholars, he became a ders-i âm (a teacher licensed to give lessons open to all). While Sultan Bayezid II was governor in Amasya, he won the sultan's closeness by presenting him with poems and odes.

Affected by the blow of 883 [1478-79], he too was sent to Tokat as a müderris (madrasa professor). He later became a kadı (judge) and died after 890 [1485-86]. He was a learned, poetic and well-mannered man. His signature was seen as a witness in the Endowment Deed of Hüsâmeddîn Temennâyî.

Prince Bayezid's Years in Amasya

Prince Bayezid was sent to the sanjak of Amasya at the age of seven and stayed there from about 1454 until 1481, when he left the city to take the throne after the death of his father, Mehmed the Conqueror. In these years he gathered artists around him; experienced statesmen such as Çandarlı İbrahim and Yahya Pasha were assigned to him as guardians, and he took calligraphy lessons from Sheikh Hamdullah of Amasya. Pîr Hasan Çelebi's winning the prince's closeness with an ode shows, in Hüsameddin's account, that he entered this circle. Another man of the prince's entourage, the father of Müeyyedzâde Abdurrahman Efendi, became the prince's chancellor in 1461; the poet Mihrî Hatun also lived in the same city.

The Blow of 883

The text does not say which event it means by "the blow of 883". The sources on Bayezid's Amasya years describe an event falling in almost the same years: Mehmed the Conqueror ordered the killing of Hızır Paşazâde Mahmud and Müeyyedzâde Abdurrahman, who were accused of leading the prince into drink and entertainment; Bayezid protected his companions, and Müeyyedzâde fled to Aleppo (884 [1479]). That Pîr Hasan Çelebi was removed from the prince's circle and sent to Tokat as a müderris may be connected with this event, but this is an inference; no source makes such a link. There is a difference of about one year between Hüsameddin's 883 and the 884 of the sources.

The Pen Name Enverî and the Endowment Deed

No poem or other record of Pîr Hasan Çelebi's life was found in the searches. The best-known poet under the pen name Enverî is the Persian master of the ode Evhadüddin Enverî, born in Khorasan, whose death is given as 585 [1189] (the date is not certain); he has no connection with Pîr Hasan Çelebi of Amasya. Whether the epithet "Şeyhîzâde" in the heading comes from his father's being a sheikh is also unclear; the sources do not confirm it.

The Endowment Deed of Hüsâmeddîn Temennâyî, where his signature was seen, could not be reached. The nisba "Temennâyî" may point to the district known in Amasya as Temenna; Hüsameddin also mentions the Temennâ quarter in volume 3, and a Temenna Mosque dated to the 15th century is registered today in the Fethiye quarter. But the mosque has no inscription and no endowment deed, so a link with the owner of the deed remains an inference.
