  • beytülmâl kâtibi: the clerk who kept the beytülmal records

Who Is a Dîvân Efendisi

The entry does not explain what this post was, but other entries in Hüsameddin's book help to define it. Ebuloğlu İsmâil Efendi became divan efendisi in 1238 [1822-23], ran the writing affairs of the mutasarrıfs and mütesellims of Amasya, and advised them. Hacı Feyzullahzâde İsmâil Efendi, after serving some viziers as divan clerk, settled in Amasya as divan efendisi and died in 1139 [1726-27]. Âgah Mehmed Efendi, while a clerk of the poll tax, attached himself to a pasha, became divan efendisi and travelled with him. From these examples it is understood that the divan efendisi was a clerk who worked beside an administrator and ran his correspondence and records. It is not written beside which administrator Eyyûb Efendi worked.

From Beytülmâl Clerk to Divan Efendisi

The move from beytülmâl clerk to divan efendisi is also seen in the life of another clerk of Amasya. Pîrîzâde Ahmed Efendi was a beytülmâl clerk, then divan efendisi to Kadızâde Mustafa Pasha, entered the ranks of the hâcegân of the imperial divan, and served as tezkire-i sânî and accountant of the poll tax. According to Mehmet Erkal, among the Ottomans the term beytülmâl later came to mean the estates of persons whose heirs are absent or unknown and the body that kept them; it may be said that the beytülmâl clerk was the person who kept this body's registers and records. This is an inference.

The Mollazâdes

Hüsameddin gives no other information on Mollazâde Şeyh İbrâhim Efendi, named in the entry as Eyyûb Efendi's brother-in-law, on his father Şeyh Sun'ullâh Efendi, or on his grandfather Molla Şeyh Ahmed Efendi. Two searches on these names and on Merzifon found no record of the Mollazâde family or of Eyyûb Efendi. Because the year of death, 1145, is given with the word "toward", it is not exact.
