Original Text (Ottoman Turkish)

Mühtedîlerden olup 964 senesinde Amasya sancağı beyi görüldü. Amasya kadısı Hüseyin Efendi cumadelâhirede Edirne'de Üç Şerefeli Medresesi müderrisliğine terfî'an ta'yîn olunup yerine Rodos kadısı Kınalızâde Müslim Efendi Amasya kadısı olarak geldi.

Bu sene şehzâdelerden Sultân Bâyezîd Kütahya ve birâderi Sultân Selîm Manîsâ eyâletlerinde icrâ-yı hükûmet ediyorlardı. İki birâder arasında rekâbet vardı. Yekdiğerine yakın oldukları münâsebetle aralak aralık hâdiseler zuhûruna bâ'is oluyorlardı. Bu sebebden 965 sâlinde [316] Sultân Bâyezîd'e Amasya, Sultân Selîm'e Konya vilâyetleri verildi. Birbirinden uzaklaşdırıldı.

In Modern English

He was one of those who converted to Islam later in life; in the year 964 [1556–57] he was seen as bey of the sanjak of Amasya. In the month of Jumada al-Akhira, Hüseyin Efendi, the judge of Amasya, was promoted and appointed professor (müderris) of the Üç Şerefeli Madrasa in Edirne; in his place Kınalızâde Müslim Efendi, the judge of Rhodes, came as judge of Amasya.

In this year, among the princes, Sultan Bayezid was governing in Kütahya and his brother Sultan Selim in the provinces of Manisa. There was rivalry between the two brothers. Because they were close to each other, they occasionally caused incidents. For this reason, in the year 965 [1557–58], Amasya was given to Sultan Bayezid and the province of Konya to Sultan Selim. They were moved away from each other.

Notes and Research

  • mühtedî: a person who has converted to Islam

  • rekâbet: contention, rivalry
  • bâ'is olmak: to cause

The Separation of the Two Princes

The entry is short, but it announces Amasya's transition to its last princely period. Prince Selim had been sent to Manisa in 1544; Bayezid had gone in 1546 to Konya with the sanjak of Karaman and later moved to Kütahya. Hürrem Sultan's death on 15 April 1558 removed Bayezid's most powerful protector. After this, Süleyman the Magnificent added 300,000 akçe to the revenues of both and transferred Selim to Konya and Bayezid to Amasya. The encyclopedia entry dates this transfer to 6 September 1558; Hüsameddin's record of the year 965 agrees with this date as a year. The encyclopedia entry attributes the rivalry both to the prince's ambitions and to the administrative, social and economic conditions in the country.

Ferruh Bey

The information that Ferruh Bey was a convert to Islam belongs to Hüsameddin and could not be verified in another source. No information was found about his term of office in Amasya or about his identity. The Safavid envoy Ferruhzâd Bey, who came to Amasya in 1555, is most probably a different person, since the two men's duties and the states they belonged to differ. The similarity of the names is not sufficient to identify the two. No information was found in other sources about Kınalızâde Müslim Efendi, the judge of Rhodes, or Hüseyin Efendi, appointed to a professorship in Edirne.
