Amasya, binlerce yıllık geçmişinde onlarca
uygarlığa beşiklik etmiş, Anadolu’nun kalbinde âmir, âlim,
şâir ve mutasavvıflar madeni olmuş bir şehirdir. Milattan
Her goncasının hande-i ulviyyeti vardır
Bülbülleri giryân eder ezhâr-ı Amasya

In Modern English
Over its thousands of years of history Amasya has been the cradle of dozens of civilizations; it is a city in the middle of Anatolia that has raised rulers, scholars, poets and mystics. These lands were home to the Hittites in 1680 BC, then to many peoples, and to the Scythians in the 700s BC; they also served the Seljuks, the Ottomans and the Republic of Türkiye as a centre of learning. By a strange twist of fate, this city had the honor of being the place where the foundations of the Ottoman state and of the Republic of Türkiye were laid. With its natural and cultural wealth, Amasya's history still keeps it among the shining centres of Türkiye.
This work, Amasya Tarihi, is among the precious works granted to few cities in the world. That a city should have a history in twelve volumes shows the depth of that city in world history. With this history written by Hüseyin Hüsâmeddîn Yasar, Amasya too has documented that it is one of the most valuable cities. For nearly a hundred years the work had been waiting to reach its readers in Latin letters. Dozens of attempts either fell short or were left unfinished without being printed. This project, begun and completed by our Municipality of Amasya and our Amasya University, bears the signature of eleven academics who are experts in their field. One of the most interesting aspects of the work is that its content is rich in biographies. Those who wish to get to know the people of Amasya, or the sultans who gave direction to the world, must turn to this work. Facts that will surprise many readers are scattered through it like pearls.
Hüseyin Hüsâmeddîn Yasar, as a son of Amasya, has given us this work in twelve volumes. As the Municipality of Amasya, we have taken it upon ourselves to make his work known to the whole world, in order to repay our debt of loyalty to him. It has honored us to have contributed to the publication of such a work. Starting from the truth that societies that do not know their history cannot look to the future with confidence, I wish that this work may be of benefit to the whole Turkish nation.
I thank the academics and staff who contributed. I would like to end my words with these verses that Hüseyin Hüsâmeddîn Yasar wrote for our beautiful city of Amasya:
Her mevsiminin bir şeref ü izzeti vardır
Her bahçesinin bir tarab u behceti vardır
Her goncasının hande-i ulviyyeti vardır
Bülbülleri giryân eder ezhâr-ı Amasya
Plain meaning: Each of its seasons has an honor and a grandeur, each of its gardens a gladness and a joy, each of its buds a lofty smile; the flowers of Amasya make the nightingales weep.
Mayor of Amasya

The Printing History of the Work
The first four volumes of the work, which the foreword says had been waiting "for nearly a hundred years," and the supplement to the fourth volume had in fact been printed in the author's lifetime. According to the encyclopedia entry, the first volume is an edition of 1327 (1911) with 428 pages; the second volume has 492 pages, the third 392 pages (1927), the fourth 240 pages (1928), and the remainder of the fourth volume came out in 1935 with 199 pages. The printing years appear with small differences in the sources: in some places the year of the first volume is given as 1912, and in one paper the year of the supplement is given as 1939.
The first volume was published in Ankara in 1986 in a partly simplified form, and all of the printed volumes were reissued by the Municipality of Amasya in 2007 in five volumes. This 2022 edition also covers the volumes in the author's own hand that had never been printed. The encyclopedia entry notes that the work is not only a city history but also deals with general Turkish history: the second volume is devoted to subjects such as the lineages of the Turks, the Turkmen tribes, the Hittites, Dânişmend Gazi and the Seljuks.
On the Dates in the Foreword
The statements in the foreword, "the Hittites in 1680 BC" and "the Scythians in the 700s," are the mayor's general framing of Amasya's antiquity; they are not taken from Hüsâmeddîn's text and no source is given. It is appropriate for the reader to take them not as exact dates but as a remark that the city is a very ancient settlement.
Hüsâmeddîn's Verses
The quatrain at the end of the foreword is part of the poem on Amasya that the author wrote under the pen name Asrî. This long poem is included in the first two volumes of the work; its details are given in the entry "Literary Personality."
