Ayrıca yine Abdullatîf Efendi Kütüphânesi’nden Vefeyâtü'l-A’yân ve Şakâ’ik-i Nu’mâniyye, Osmân Fâ’ik Efendi’nin kütüphanesinden Tabakât-ı İsnevî adlı biyografi kitaplarını okumuştur.
¹⁵
In Modern English
Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn, in the Hijri year 1296 (1878-1879 CE), at the age of ten, first went to the Balcı Mektebi, where, thanks to the interest and effort of Hacı Hâfız Halîl Efendi, he memorized the Qur'an. The following year he entered the Rüşdiye school, and over four years studied sciences such as Turkish, Arabic, Persian, history, geography, geometry and arithmetic, and continued his training in writing. In 1304 (1886-1887 CE), thanks to the interest shown by his teacher Arhavili Osmân Remzî Efendi, he received his diploma as the first in his class, and continued with the lessons of Mecdîzâde Hâfız Abdurrahman Kâmil Efendi, who was then mufti of Amasya, and of Hâfız Mustafa Sadık Efendi. While in the third year of the school he stayed in the room above the fetvahâne next to the Abdullatîf Efendi Library, and from Şirvânîzâde Ahmed Enver Efendi he read Sa'dî's Bostan, the Yûsuf and Zelîhâ mesnevis, the dictionaries of Şu'ûrî and Nâsırî for Persian reading and lexicon, the Burhân-ı Kâtı', then Attâr's Pendnâme, the Mantıku't-Tayr, the Divan of Hâfız-ı Şîrâzî, selected poems of the Persian poets, Ziyâ Paşa's Harâbât and Firdevsî's Şehnâme. In this period he stayed together at night in this room with Şevkî Hasan Efendi (Helvacızâde), with whom he had studied at the Rüşdiye, who was born in the Hacı Hamza neighbourhood and was three years older than he, and they worked at their studies together. Another fetvahâne that contributed to his scholarly life is the Zaviye of Ak Hasanzâde el-Hâc Hâfız Hasan Ağa; this is the fetvahâne of Hilmi Osman Efendi (Gürcü el-Hâc Hâfız). The author states that he stayed in the room above this fetvahâne for about five years, working at his studies, and at times served this person.
He also studied the commentaries of Şeyh Rızâ and Seyyid Abdullâh on the Kâfiye and the Şâfiye, the glosses of the Fenârî commentary on the Îsâgocî, and Arabic dictionaries such as Vankulu and Ahterî. From the Abdullatîf Efendi Library he also read Vefeyâtü'l-A'yân and Şakâ'ik-i Nu'mâniyye, and from the library of Osmân Fâ'ik Efendi biographical books such as İsnevî's Tabakât. The history of the past states of Iran from the Şehnâme, and the biographies of important figures that he read in Vefeyâtü'l-A'yân and Şakâ'ik-i Nu'mâniyye, deeply impressed him, and at that time awakened in him a desire to bring together only the important scholars of Amasya and write their biographies. In 1305 (1887-1888 CE) he began visiting well-known scholars and researching their biographies, and for these efforts earned the appreciation of the scholars of the time. This increased his determination still further; he set about writing the history of Amasya and its scholars who had lived before, and for this he began to tour the libraries in Amasya, to visit the graves of scholars who had died and read their gravestones, and to wander in amazement among the old tombs seen in the Şâmîce and Gök Medrese neighbourhoods.
In his education he read the following lessons and books from important scholars: the lessons on tasavvurât and tasdîkât; Muğni'l-Lebîb, Telvîh, the commentary on the Akâid-i Nesefiyye; the glosses of Hayâlî and Siyelkûtî; the Siyelkûtî and Konevî glosses on the mukaddemât-ı erbaa; the commentary on the Akâid-i Adudiyye, with Gelenbevî's gloss; from tafsir, the surah Tebâreke and the Amme juz; from the methodology of hadith, Takrîbü'n-Nevevî and its commentary Tedrîbü'r-Râvî; from the science of meânî, the Mutavvel. From Ödemişli Mustafa Efendi he read the Mir'ât and its glosses, from Harpûtî Abdullatîf Efendi the Muhtasarü'l-Meânî, from Ermenekli Süleymân Sırrî Efendi the Isâmü'l-Ferîde, from İnegöllü Ali Râtib Efendi the commentary on the Kasîdetü'l-Bürde, from Dağıstânî Ömer Ziyâeddîn Efendi the Muhtasaru'l-Buhârî, and in Damascus from Şeyh Bedreddîn Mehmed bin Abdurrahmânü'l-Mağribî the Sahîhü'l-Buhârî. After studying many books on these sciences, he received an icazetname from el-Hâc Ahmed Nûreddîn Efendi in mid-Cumâdelâhire 1317 (1899 CE).
His teacher Perşenbeli Ahmed Remzî Efendi, from whom he learned the inheritance section of fiqh (ferâiz), was a clerk of records at the Kısmet-i Askeriyye Court at the Bâb-ı Meşîhat, and so in 1316 (1898) took Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsâmeddîn on as an assistant at a salary of two hundred kuruş. In this way the author found the opportunity to examine what he could see of the court registers in and around Istanbul, and at this time he acquired much information about the notables of Amasya.
The author benefited from the scholars of his time in many subjects. For example, he benefited from the lesson "commentary on the surah Nebe" from Seyyid Mehmed Şükrü Efendi (İmâmzâde, Hâce), one of the famous scholars of the day, who because of his frail body was called "Tahta Seyyid Efendi" among the children. He also read a Persian lesson with Enver Ahmed Efendi (Şirvânîzâde).
He states that in his education and research he received much help, and is grateful for it, especially from Osman Nûrî Pasha, governor of Damascus and müşir of the Fifth Army, from Hüseyin Fevzi Pasha of Amasya, müşir of the Third Army in Salonica, and from Şeyhülislam Hâlid Efendizâde Mehmed Cemâleddîn Efendi.

On the Years of Education
The encyclopedia entry too reports that primary schooling began at the Balcı Mektebi in 1879, that he entered the Rüşdiye in 1883 and finished it in 1887. The years of starting the Balcı Mektebi (1879) and finishing the Rüşdiye (1887) agree with the Hijri years given by the author himself. As for entering the Rüşdiye, in the text it appears to be the year after the Balcı Mektebi, whereas in the encyclopedia it is 1883; the difference between the two pieces of information has not been resolved. The encyclopedia also writes that in 1889 the author went to Istanbul and stayed at the Kalenderhâne Madrasa, became a mülâzım of Tokadîzâde Ahmed Nûreddin Efendi, went to Crete in 1894 and to Damascus in 1895 and from there to the Hejaz, and worked in the libraries of Chania and Damascus. This information does not appear in this part of the introduction; it should be read together with the posts described in the next entry.
The encyclopedia also says that the author received his icazet in 1899 "after studying lessons for ten years." The person who gave the icazetname is Ahmed Nûreddin Efendi. The person called "el-Hâc Ahmed Nûreddîn Efendi" in the text and "Tokadîzâde Ahmed Nûreddin Efendi" in the encyclopedia appears to be the same person.
The Books Read
The long list of books in the text shows the madrasa curriculum of the time: Arabic sarf and nahiv (grammar) books, logic, kalam, tafsir, hadith and literature. According to the author's own account, biographical books such as Vefeyâtü'l-A'yân and Şakâ'ik-i Nu'mâniyye awakened in him the wish to write the lives of the scholars of Amasya; no other source was found that confirms or corrects this account.
The Ferâiz Teacher and the Study of the Registers
The encyclopedia entry reports that in 1898 the author was made assistant to Perşembeli Ahmed Remzi Efendi, and that he regarded this post as an opportunity to examine the sharia court registers around Istanbul. This shows that the author gathered part of his information on Amasya from official records.
