In Modern English
The writing of city histories as an independent branch of science does not go back to very early times. Nevertheless, the writing of the history of cities together with other branches of science existed in very early periods too. The geographical discoveries, the Age of Enlightenment and the social, economic and political transformations of the 18th and 19th centuries set cities in motion and led these places to gain in importance. Thus in the 19th century, studies on the city became the focus of researchers' interest on subjects such as the economic and administrative development of the city, the populations and groups that make up the city, the identity of being urban, and the relationship of cities with the nation-state.
In general, developments in Ottoman historiography and developments in the writing of city histories ran parallel. "Amasya Tarihi," the great work of Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn, a historian and man of letters of the late Ottoman period and the early period of the Republic of Türkiye, which has reached our day despite many misfortunes befalling him, holds a distinguished place among city histories. The work, one of the first and most important examples for Anatolian cities of urban historiography, a very important branch of science for grasping historical continuity in cities, also gives information on the course of Turkish history in Anatolia. The detailed treatment, with a rich variety of sources, of the origin of the city's name, the information on the city in different sources, the Turks' dominion over the city, the ethnic structure and population of the city, those who held office in the city administration, and the important people of the city has increased the depth of the work. The work, which made a great contribution to Seljuk, Beylik and Ottoman history as well as to Turkish history in general, has left an unparalleled legacy to future generations regarding the social, political, economic and cultural structure of Amasya in the course of history.
The author, who devoted his life to this work, had to write it several times, and the work has reached us as a whole in 12 volumes. The author, who made a separate effort to have the work printed, was able to have the first volume printed in 1912 and the second in 1914. Unfortunately, Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn did not succeed in printing the whole of his work, and could bring out in print only the first four volumes and the remainder. The later volumes remained as the author's copy. In the Hijri year 1331 (1912-1913 CE), when everything after the eleventh volume was completely burned in the Taş Musluk fire, he had to rewrite that part. The misfortune of "Amasya Tarihi" continued after the author's death too, and unfortunately no study in which all of these volumes are published together has been made until now.
As Fuad Köprülü expressed in his words, "If Amasya Tarihi is published in full, it will earn not a life of two or three years like books tied to fashion but an eternal existence, and it will be a constant reference for scholars," the recognition of a work of this value, which will always be consulted even as decades pass, and of its author will increase still further the respect and prestige felt for the work. In this section, after information is given about the author's family, scholarly and professional life, literary personality and historiography, and his works, the reason "Amasya Tarihi" was written, the efforts to have it printed, its volumes and its sources will be briefly introduced.

The Scope of the Work
According to the encyclopedia entry, the first volume is devoted to the religious and cultural institutions of Amasya: the founding of the city, its districts, castles, caves, neighbourhoods, mosques, tombs, poets and calligraphers, Sufi order sheikhs, madrasas and the surrounding towns are described in this volume. The second volume is of the nature of a general Turkish history; the qualities and lineages of the Turks, the Turkmen tribes, the Hittites, Dânişmend Gazi, and Amasya in the time of the Seljuks and the Ottomans are treated in this volume. The third volume extends from the period of the Beyliks, Yıldırım Bayezid's emirate of Amasya and the Ottoman era to Kuyucu Murad Pasha's clearing of Amasya and its surroundings of bandits in 1608. The fourth volume and its remainder are devoted to the scholars and sheikhs raised in Amasya from 1608 to 1688 and to the governors who came here.
On the Printing Years
The author printed the first volume in 1912 and the second in 1914; this is the information in this introduction. The encyclopedia entry, however, gives the dates 1327 Rumi and 1330 Hijri for the first volume and 1329 Rumi and 1332 Hijri for the second. Because Rumi and Hijri years are counted separately from each other, these dates come to around 1911-1912 and 1913-1914 in the Gregorian calendar. The years may therefore shift by a year or two depending on the sources; for the exact year one must look at the title page of the volumes.
The Fire and the Rewriting
The Taş Musluk fire mentioned in the introduction is foremost among the disasters that befell the author. The author states that in the fire everything after the eleventh volume was completely burned and that he had to rewrite that part. Köksal reports that the author himself recorded at the beginning of the eleventh volume that "everything after the letter şın was entirely burned." In addition, a paper relates that the fifth volume was destroyed in a fire that broke out at the printing house during its printing; the basis of this rumor is not shown.
The Value and Criticism of the Work
The German orientalist Franz Babinger, noting that the printed part alone runs to about 1800 pages, said that on some subjects the work is "a real treasure" and proposed that it be translated, at least in part, into a Western language. On the other hand, the encyclopedia entry also notes that the author's mostly not citing the sources he consulted, and his resorting in some matters to excessive etymological comparisons, raise doubts about its scholarly value. Köksal writes that the author mentions many works, citing some collectively and some one by one, but that his not giving his source in many places where documentation is needed makes researchers doubtful. It would be right for the reader to keep both judgments in mind.
