Eserin yazımında dikkat edilen hususlardan bazıları şunlardır;

Sâkin hemze harfleri kesme işareti (’) ile belirtilmiş, hemzeden ve ayndan önceki harf sâkin olduğunda yine kesme işareti (’) kullanılmış ve kelimenin başındaki ayn ve hemzeler gösterilmemiştir. Med harfleri (uzun a, i ve u sesleri) şapka (^) işâretiyle gösterilmiştir. Şiirler hariç kalın harfler a, u, ı sesleriyle, ince harfler e, ü, i sesleriyle hissettirilmeye çalışılmıştır.

“El” (ال) harf-i tarifleri, metin içinde küçük harfle yazılmışken Türkçe’nin kurallarına uygun olarak cümle başında büyük harfle yazılmıştır. Ayetlerde ise sûre ismi, sûre sırası/ayet numarası (Bakara, 2/113) şeklinde dipnot olarak verilmiştir.

Farsça tamlamalar şu şekilde yazılmıştır: bâb-ı cedîd, gül-i ra’nâ, dâr-ı ilm, kitâb-ı ilâhî, Hazret-i Dâvûd.

In Modern English

The publication of Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn Yasar's "Amasya Tarihi," a great work for Turkish history, culture and literature as much as for Amasya and its people, has been brought to completion through the joint efforts of the Municipality of Amasya and Amasya University. The volumes of the work, whose preparation began long ago, were transcribed into today's alphabet by faculty members who are experts in the field and handed over to the editorial board. After about a year of meticulous work by the editorial board, this work in 12 volumes has been presented to the attention of researchers and readers interested in the history of Amasya.

To establish a common language and spelling in the edition of the work, certain rules were set, and for the words in the work the usages of present-day Turkish were preferred wherever possible.

The first four volumes and the remainder (bakiye) of the work are printed, and at the end they contain a table in which errors are corrected; even so, the work had occasional spelling errors besides these. The editorial board and the preparers of the edition have corrected these errors. The editors' additions are marked in the footnotes with (Ed.), and the additions of the preparers with the abbreviation (Haz.).

In volumes 6-12, which the author wrote in his own hand, some expressions were also, rarely, corrected without any mark or footnote. In some places in the volumes he wrote in his own hand, Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn left blanks to fill in later. These places are indicated in the work with footnotes. The author also at times put numbers for some footnotes, but no footnote could be found at the relevant place. He probably did not live long enough to complete these places, which he had left for later.

There are many passages in the author's work that he wrote in Arabic and Persian. In writing them, where the Persian and Arabic expressions take the form of praise of a person, that is, describe his qualities, it was preferred to write them in Latin letters so that they would be easily understood. For the other passages written in Arabic, translations were given in the footnotes, where deemed appropriate, by the preparers and the editors. Because the Arabic and Persian expressions were incomplete in the text worked on by the late Prof. Dr. Mehmet Arslan, who prepared the first three volumes and the remainder of the fourth, these places and other spelling errors were corrected by the editors. Printing or spelling errors in some of the poems the author recorded were also corrected by finding them in the poets' divans. Persian poems are written in Arabic letters.

Some of the points observed in the writing of the work are as follows:

Silent hamza letters are shown with an apostrophe (’); the apostrophe is likewise used when the letter before a hamza or ayn is silent, and ayn and hamza at the beginning of a word are not shown. The long a, i and u sounds are marked with a circumflex (^). Outside poems, an attempt was made to convey thick letters with the sounds a, u, ı and thin letters with the sounds e, ü, i. Words such as ışk, fursat, kapu, bağçe were written according to today's pronunciation as aşk, fırsat, kapı, bahçe. Turkish verbs, nouns, suffixes and endings were written according to today's pronunciation unless metre and rhyme required otherwise. Consonant hardening in suffixes was not observed (idüb – edip, itmek – etmek, gösterüb – gösterip, and so on). Words formed by Arabic and Persian compounding rules that have become Turkish were written without an apostrophe or hyphen (alelâde, alelhusûs, ba'dehû, bilcümle, bilfiil, bilhassa, binâenaleyh, fevkalâde, mûmâileyh, velhâsıl, etc.).

The definite article "el" (ال) is written in lower case within the text but, in keeping with the rules of Turkish, in capitals at the beginning of a sentence. For verses, a footnote is given in the form of the surah name and surah number/verse number (Bakara, 2/113).

Persian compounds are written as follows: bâb-ı cedîd, gül-i ra'nâ, dâr-ı ilm, kitâb-ı ilâhî, Hazret-i Dâvûd. Particular attention was also paid to Persian compound adjectives, and such expressions were not confused with izafet compounds (sulh-perver, hikmet-şinâs, hak-perver, can-güdâz). Arabic compounds are written as follows: bâtınü'l-kalb, hanefiyyü'l-mezheb, rabbü'ş-şems, resûlü's-sakaleyn, rabbü'l-mağribeyn and the like.

In addition, titles of works are written in quotation marks, and for the other punctuation marks the text was followed faithfully. Page numbers are given in square brackets and bold type, without a line break, in accordance with the page numbers of the original text. Page numbers falling in the very middle of a word were moved to the beginning or the end of the word. The index sections at the end of the volumes are given according to the page numbers in the author's copy.

The Arabic months are written joined together, in lower case within the sentence, remaining faithful to the original text (as in cumâdelâhire).

  • müellif: author
  • tashih: correction
  • bakıyye: remainder, supplementary part
  • tercüme: translation
  • hemze, ayn: in Arabic, two letters, one a glottal stop and one produced in the throat
  • med harfleri: long vowels
  • tamlama: the joining of two words to each other by Arabic or Persian rules
  • fihrist: index

The Effect of This Spelling on the Reader

The decisions taken by the preparers explain why the text we read looks plain in some places and heavy in others. The word forms were brought closer to today's spelling, but the Arabic and Persian compounds and the circumflexed vowels were kept. For this reason forms such as "idüb" became "edip," while compounds such as "bâb-ı cedîd" stand in their original construction.

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Arslan, named in the preface, is the researcher who transcribed the first three volumes and the remainder of the fourth volume. He is also mentioned in Köksal's paper as one of the academics who worked on the transcription project of the work.

The Volumes in the Author's Hand and the Blanks

The preface says that the author left some places blank to fill in later and that some footnote numbers remained without counterparts. This shows that volumes 6-12 are a text that had been fair-copied but had not passed through a final reading. According to a paper summary from Amasya University, these volumes were fair-copied by the author between 1931 and 1939 and remained in manuscript until 2022 because no means of printing could be found. The last years of the author's life were spent on this work.
