In Modern English

Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn, who speaks of his own life story in his work, was born in Amasya, in the house adjoining the west of the mosque in the Çeribaşı neighbourhood, at dawn on the last Friday of the month of Recep in the Hijri year 1286 (November 1869 CE). He is the son of Abdîzâde el-Hâc Mehmed Ağa; Mehmed Ağa descended from Alaybeyi Kara Hüseyin Ağa, son of el-Hâc Ali Ağa, son of Abdî Ağa, son of el-Hâc Mehmed Ağa, son of Abdî Ağa. Hüseyin is a twin. His father gave him the name Hüseyin, and his mother Zâhide Hatun (daughter of Hâfız el-Hâc Osmân Efendi and granddaughter of Şeyhü'l-Kurrâ el-Hâc Halîl Efendi) gave him the epithet Hüsâmeddîn out of the love she felt for Hüsâmeddîn Halvetî Hazretleri, one of the saints of Kuba. His mother Zâhide Hatun descended from Köprülü Halîl Efendi (Kuru İmam el-Hâc Hâfız) and is buried beside the grave of Hüseyin Dede.

His ancestor Hüseyin Bey (Kara) was from Amasya; he was the son of Doğan Bey, son of Ömer Bey, son of Abdullah Bey, son of Doğan, one of the people of the Ahî Sâbıkeddîn neighbourhood. His ancestor Doğan Bey was a mîrlivâ (sanjak governor) and died as a martyr in the Baghdad campaign. The author states that these were among the descendants of Cebeci Devlethan Bey and children of Baba İlyas Horasânî.

In his work the author states that Hüseyin Bey served in posts such as castle steward (kethüda), holder (mutasarrıf) of the Moramol Malikâne, warden (dizdar) of the inner castle, alaybeyi of Amasya and mütesellim of Amasya, and that his sons Hasan, Ali and Mustafa Ağa were Janissaries. Hacı Ali Ağa was one of the Janissary notables and was known as "son of Kara Hüseyin"; his sons were Abdülkerîm and Mustafa Ağa.

Abdülkerîm Ağa, known as Hacı Abdî Ağa, the serdar of Amasya, died in the Hijri year 1203 (1788-1789 CE); his sons were Hüseyin, Mehmed and Veli Ağa. The serdar of Amasya el-Hâc Mehmed Ağa also died in 1239 (1823-1824 CE); his sons were Halîl, Hasan, Abdî and el-Hâc Ali Ağa. All of these were known as the "sons of Kara Hüseyin."

Hüseyin Hüsameddîn's grandfather Abdî Ağa was well known in Amasya and died in the Hijri year 1269 (1852-1853 CE). His sons were Ahmed, Mustafa, Osman and el-Hâc Mehmed Ağa. These too were called the "sons of Abdî." The author's father el-Hâc Mehmed Ağa was known in Amasya for his fortune and wealth, and died in the month of Recep 1331 (June/July 1913 CE).

On the basis of this information the family tree of Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn has been prepared as follows.

Children: Cemal, Kemaleddin, Aliye, Naciye, Serpil

The author states that they lived in Çeribaşı in Amasya and that Mir Hamza was for a time their neighbour, and also that when Hulûsî Mehmed Efendi (Sofuzâde) died without children, his house in the Kağnılı Pazarı passed to him.

He took the surname "Yasar" with the Surname Law issued on 21 June 1934. The death notice records that the author had two sons, named Cemal, who had served as district governor (kaymakam) of Kemaliye, and Kemaleddin, a lieutenant, and two daughters, named Aliye and Naciye, who were teachers. He had a son-in-law named Ziya Gücer, who had served as a major. It is also understood from his letter to Atatürk that he had two more children. In the 1978 contract with the Municipality of Amasya, the names Cemal Yasar, Serpil Yasar, Kemaleddin Yasar, Doğan Gücer and Altan Gücer appear as the author's heirs. So the name of one of his children must be Serpil. Doğan and Altan Gücer are also his grandchildren.

Date of Birth

The sources differ on the day of birth. The text of the work says the last Friday of the month of Recep 1286 and gives November 1869 as its equivalent. The encyclopedia entry says only November 1869. A symposium paper gives 5 November 1869, and a biography page gives 31 October 1869. The difference may come from the Hijri-Gregorian conversion; the date the author himself gave should be taken as the basis.

The Surname Yasar

The Surname Law was issued in 1934; the author took "Yasar" after this date. The encyclopedia entry and the symposium papers also refer to the author by this surname.

Family and Neighbourhood

That the family is referred to as the "sons of Kara Hüseyin" and the "sons of Abdî" shows that in the Ottoman provinces nicknames served to distinguish lineages. The posts of alaybeyi, dizdar and mütesellim in the text indicate that the family was among the military and administrative notables of Amasya. The genealogical information rests on the author's own account; no information could be found in any source that it was compared with other documents.

The Contradiction over the Children

The death notice records the names of four children; in his letter to Atatürk the author speaks of six children. The introduction tries to explain this difference by the existence of a daughter named Serpil and also of another, unknown child. Since the number of names is five, the name of the sixth child is not known.
