The Head and the Deputy of the Seyyids

The naqib al-ashraf is the head of the Seyyids and Sharifs, the descendants of the Prophet. The purpose of the institution was to keep a record of the lineage of Seyyids and Sharifs, to grant them certain privileges and exemptions, and to issue documents proving their Seyyid status. In the provinces these matters were handled by the deputies of the naqib al-ashraf; a Seyyid who lost his genealogy applied to the naqib al-ashraf in the capital or to the deputies in the districts and had a copy drawn from the register. The researcher Ayhan Işık states that the institution was founded in the time of Bayezid II.

Hâfız Mehmed Efendi's lineage goes back to Muhyiddîn Mehmed Efendi, the sheikh of the Müftüzâde Tomb in İçerişehir. An article on the Halvetis of Amasya writes that the grave of Gümüşlüzâde Sheikh Muhyiddin Muhammed Halvetî was in a small private room behind a fountain at Selağzı, but that no trace of the tomb or the grave remains today. Whether it is the same place Hüsameddin calls the "Müftüzâde Tomb" is not certain. The name "Pîr Muhyiddin Mehmed Çelebi" also appears in the succession of sheikhs of the Yâkub Pasha Lodge; whether this name belongs to the same person as the Muhyiddîn Mehmed in Hüsameddin could not be determined.

No information on the family was found in any source other than Hüsameddin.
