In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He was the son of Gevikzâde Mahmûd Pasha of Amasya. Because his father had gone from çavuşbaşı to beylerbeyi of Algiers, he became famous as "Paşazâde." In Istanbul he studied under Erzincanlı Müftüzâde Ali Efendi, one of the senior scholars, and became müderris in 1106 [1694-95].

After teaching for a long time and climbing the steps of the ilmiye madrasas, he became molla (kadı) of Damascus at the beginning of Rabiulevvel 1127 [1715], of Egypt at the beginning of Rabiulâhir 1134 [1722], of Bursa at the beginning of Muharram 1137 [1724], and of Mecca at the beginning of Muharram 1141 [1728], and in Muharram 1143 [1730] kadı of Istanbul.

In the Patrona Halil events that broke out in Rabiulevvel of the same year he was forcibly removed from office; he was retired with the rank of Anadolu kazasker and was given the kaza of Amasya as arpalık. At the beginning of 1148 [1735], through the efforts of Şeyhülislam Merzifonlu eş-Şeyh Dürrî Mehmed Efendi, he became Anadolu kazasker.

In 1149 [1736-37] he left when his term expired, and although retired again with the kaza of Amasya, he died on the twenty-first day of Rabiulevvel 1153 [1740]. He is buried in Üsküdar. He was a scholar, open-handed, abstinent, magnanimous, one of the men of the ilmiye. His sons were es-Seyyid Ahmed, Feyzullah and Mahmûd Efendi. His son-in-law Müftüzâde Yahyâ Efendi of Amasya became kadı of Istanbul.

Es-Seyyid Ahmed Efendi came as naib of Amasya and, being of a young age, dared to commit some improper acts and was dismissed. Es-Seyyid Feyzullah Efendi, in his father's name, had a fine madrasa, a library, and a fountain in front of it built on the plot of his father's house in the Şâmice quarter, where his father had been born. For their expenses he endowed eight shops. He gave this place the name "Feyziye Madrasa." In the lower [part] it became famous as the "Bakacak Madrasa."

Paşazâde İbrâhim Efendi

İbrâhim Efendi's career follows the classic ladder of the ilmiye class: professorship, then the kadıships of great cities such as Damascus, Egypt and Bursa and the mollaship of Mecca, and finally the kadıship of Istanbul and the post of Anadolu kazasker. That his kadıship of Istanbul began in Muharram 1143 and ended with the Patrona rebellion (the 1730 uprising that led to the deposition of Sultan Ahmed III) shows that his tenure was short. The same event appears in entry 164 of this volume as a turning point.

The complex of madrasa, library and fountain that Feyzullah Efendi had built in the Şâmice quarter shows that Amasya also expanded in the Ottoman period with new waqf buildings. No detail on the Feyziye or Bakacak Madrasa was found in the readable sources other than Hüsameddin; whether the building still stands today could not be determined. The meaning of the word "Aşağı" (lower) in the text is also uncertain; from which place or feature the name "Bakacak Madrasa" derives cannot be understood from the book.
