The Madrasa Beside the Mehmed Pasha Mosque

The Mehmed Pasha Mosque is in the Mehmed Pasha quarter of Amasya, near the Yeşilırmak. It was built by Hızır Paşazâde Mehmed Pasha, vizier of Bayezid II and lala of Prince Ahmed, and according to its inscription was completed in January 1486. The complex is known to have consisted of a mosque, madrasa, imaret, tomb, tabhane, zaviye, fountain and cemetery; however its madrasa and imaret have burned and vanished, and what has survived to the present is the mosque, its attached wing spaces and the tomb. The madrasa of Fâtıma Hanım that Hüsameddin mentions is a building built beside the mosque in the eighteenth century; whether it is on the same site as the first madrasa that burned and vanished could not be understood from the sources examined, and whether it still stands today could not be determined.

According to Hüsameddin, the person who completed the waqf is İbrâhim Bey, son of Yeğen Ali Bey; that is, the building was begun on the initiative of a woman benefactor and completed by her relative. If one recalls that Bolulu İbrâhim Efendi in entry 155 was also kürsü şeyhi of this mosque, it is seen that the mosque continued in the eighteenth century as a functioning religious center.

The word "ammesi" in the text means paternal aunt; that is, Fâtıma Hanım is the sister of İbrâhim Bey's father. No source other than Hüsameddin was found for the identity of Fâtıma Hanım's father Hüseyin Pasha and for the details of the madrasa's founding.
