In Modern English

He was the son of Ahmed Pasha of Amasya; Ahmed Pasha was the son of Veli Pasha, and Veli Pasha the son of Hacı İlyâs Bey. First a holder of a zeamet (züamâ), then one of the begs (ümerâ), he died as a martyr in the war against the brigands in 1016 [1607-08]. The other Hacı Beyzâde İlyâs Bey was the son of Mehmed Pasha, and Mehmed Pasha the son of Veli Pasha. He too was one of the begs and died in the Polish (Lehistân) war in 1030 [1620-21]. His brother is Ali Bey. His sons are Çavuşbaşı Mehmed Bey and Mustafa Pasha.

Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • züamâ: holders of zeamets; sipahis who held a large military fief (zeamet) of high annual revenue
  • ümerâ: begs, sanjak governors
  • eşkıyâ harbi: war fought against brigands and rebels
  • Lehistân: Poland
  • çavûşbaşı: head of the çavuşes; çavuşes were officials who carried messages and orders and kept order at the palace and on campaign

Three Generations, Three İlyâses

The entry lists the branches of the Hacı Beyzâde family after Veli Pasha. Veli Pasha's sons are Ahmed and Mehmed Pasha; Ahmed has a son İlyâs Bey, and Mehmed too has a son İlyâs Bey. Hüsameddin's entry "Ahmed Paşa-Hacı Beyzâde" writes that Ahmed Pasha died in early 991 as beylerbeyi of Revan, that his son was İlyâs Bey of the notables of Amasya, and that İlyâs's sons were Çavuşbaşı Mehmed Bey and Vezir Mustafa Pasha. In our entry the last sentence, "His sons," does not say which İlyâs or which Ali it means. The other entry ties these two sons to İlyâs, son of Ahmed Pasha; if so, the man who died in 1016 is the father of Çavuşbaşı Mehmed Bey and Mustafa Pasha. This is a suggested reading and not certain.

The İlyâs Bey named in the next entry (no. 287) is the son of Ali Bey and became sanjak governor "during the steward's office of Hacı Beyzâde Mustafa Pasha." It is likely that this Mustafa Pasha is the Mustafa Pasha named at the end of this entry, but since no explicit link is drawn between the entries, this is only an inference.

The Wars of 1016 and 1030

Hüsameddin gives the place of neither the "war against the brigands" of 1016 nor the Polish war of 1030. The year 1016 begins in May 1607. The TDV entry on the Celâlî rebellions writes that the very dangerous rebellion of Canbolatoğlu Ali, who dominated Aleppo and Damascus, was suppressed only in 1607 by Kuyucu Murad Pasha. It is possible that by "brigands" Hüsameddin meant this suppression campaign; since the text does not name it, this is a guess.

The Hijri year 1030 begins in November 1620. Osman II set out on the Hotin campaign in 1620, and the battles fought before Hotin Castle against the Polish-Lithuanian army ended on 9 October 1621 with a treaty making the Dniester the frontier. It is plausible that the "Polish war" was this campaign; Hüsameddin's record could not be confirmed by another source.

No information on these İlyâs Beys was found in other sources.
