Serhoş Bâlî Efendi

The Bâlî Efendi to whom Alâeddîn Çelebi attached himself appears in the TDV under the name "Sarhoş Bâlî Efendi." The entry says that he was born in Tire, that his father was Kadı Birgivîzâde Muhyiddin Efendi, tutor of Prince Ahmed, son of Bayezid II, and that after his madrasa education he taught at the Kepenekçi Madrasa in Istanbul. The nickname "Sarhoş" (drunk) was given, according to Âşık Çelebi, because of his excessive love of drink and entertainment, and according to Hasan Çelebi because he was intoxicated by the wine of divine love. Bâlî attached himself to Ramazan Efendi and, after receiving authorization, became sheikh of the Ali Pasha Lodge in Istanbul; at his death he was buried in the cemetery of the Altuncuzâde Lodge in Lâleli. He used the pen name "Cevherî" in his poems and has no divan.

Hüsameddin's entry "Bâlî İlhami Efendi-Serhûş" ties the same man to Amasya and gives the details differently. According to it Bâlî was born in Amasya in 915 and went to Tire with his father in 918; in 949 he became müderris of the Kepengci Sinan Madrasa at twenty-five akçe, and in 951 he attached himself to Ramazan Efendi, sheikh of the Atik Ali Pasha Lodge. When Ramazan Efendi died in 963 he became sheikh of the lodge, but because of some gossip he withdrew six months later and took up the sheikhship of the Kurşunlu Türbe Lodge. The nickname "Serhoş" arises from the dominance of love and devotion in his state. He died in Zilkade 980 and was buried on the site of the Kurşunlu Türbe Lodge in the Sultan Selim district. Alâeddîn Çelebi's death in 985 is five years after this date; that is, he outlived his sheikh.

Three differences are seen between the two accounts: the place of birth (Tire or Amasya), the name and identity of the father, and the place of burial (the Altuncuzâde cemetery or the Kurşunlu Türbe Lodge). For Ramazan Efendi, Bâlî's teacher, Hüsameddin gives a death date of 963. In the TDV entry on Bâlî, however, the teacher is named as the founder of the Ramazâniyye branch; the founder of that branch, Mahfî Ramazan Efendi, was born in 949 [1542], and given that Bâlî died in 980 he could not have been his pupil. It is therefore highly probable that the two Ramazan Efendis are not the same person; this is an inference, since the sources do not make the comparison explicitly.

The Waqf of Şeyhü'l-harem Mehmed Çelebi

The text says that in 968 Alâeddîn Çelebi acted as witness to the waqf of Şeyhü'l-harem Mehmed Çelebi. The entry does not state which building the waqf covered or what post Mehmed Çelebi held, and this waqf was not found in the searches made.

No information on Alâeddîn Çelebi was found in other sources.
