In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He was the son of Beylerbeyi Veli Pasha, and Veli Pasha was the son of Hacı İlyâs Bey. He was one of the begs in the retinue of Prince Sultan Mustafa Khan, the governor of Amasya and son of Sultan Süleyman Khan. After the prince was martyred in Şevval 960 [October 1553], he became a sanjak governor (mîrlivâ), and in 964 [1556-57] he was appointed governor of the sanjak of Karahisâr-ı Şarkî.

In 966 [1558-59] he was appointed governor of the sanjak of Çorum, and in 977 [1569-70] of the sanjak of Amasya. At the end of Receb 977, as beylerbeyi of Kefe, and later of Basra and Lahsa, he died in Lahsa in 983 [1575-76]. He was one of the great begs. His son is Mehmed Bey; his brothers are Ahmed and Mehmed Pasha. [268]

Prince Mustafa's Circle

The "martyrdom" in the text is the killing of Prince Mustafa, eldest son of Süleyman the Magnificent, in 1553 in the camp near Konya Ereğlisi. Prince Mustafa was sent to Amasya in Safer 948 [June 1541], and his death took place in Şevval 960 [October 1553]; these dates are taken from the TDV entry. The year of his appointment to the sanjak of Amasya is given as 1538 in one study, whereas the TDV entry places his transfer from Manisa to Amasya in 1541. The date "Şevval of the year 960" that Hüsameddin uses for the same event agrees with both writings.

Many members of the Hacı Beyzâde family took posts in the retinues of princes. According to Hüsameddin's entry on Ahmed Pasha, İlyâs Pasha's brother Ahmed Pasha was in 962 the steward of the crown estates (hâss) of Amasya; in the events of the princes in 965 he sided with Selim II; in 974, when Selim II became sultan and his son Prince Murad was appointed governor of Amasya, he was in Murad's retinue as palace guard. After 982 he became in turn beylerbeyi of Mosul, Çıldır, Nakhchivan, Tiflis and Revan; in 988 he was dismissed for having been defeated in a war with the Georgians, and in early 991 he died fighting in the retinue of Özdemiroğlu Osman Pasha. These details rest on Hüsameddin's own biographical records.

The Beylerbeyilik of Lahsa

Lahsa is the region on the Persian Gulf coast in the east of present-day Saudi Arabia. In Ottoman sources the form Lahsâ is used, arising from pronouncing Ahsâ together with the Arabic article. When the Portuguese threat appeared, the region was brought under Ottoman rule in 1547 and attached to the beylerbeyilik of Basra, and it probably became a separate beylerbeyilik after 1553; some sources say the beylerbeyilik was founded in 1552. In the early period the beylerbeyi of Lahsa was chosen from among people who had served as governors in Baghdad and Syria. İlyâs Pasha, however, came from Anatolian sanjaks and from Kefe, which looks different from the general tendency the same source describes. No conclusion can be drawn from a single example, and the sequence Hüsameddin gives could not be checked against another source.

Another Veli Pasha from the Same Family

One study writes that, thanks to the administration of a Veli Pasha who was sanjak governor of Amasya in 1534, the rebellions tied to Safavid propaganda were suppressed. Whether a link can be drawn between this Veli Pasha and the beylerbeyi Veli Pasha whom Hüsameddin names as İlyâs's father could not be determined from the sources. They may be two people with the same name or a single person; it can only be said that the name and the post (the sanjak governorship of Amasya) coincide.
