In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He was the son of Hacı Hamza Bey, one of the begs, and Hamza Bey was the son of Hacı Perviz Bey. This İlyâs Bey belonged to the begs in the retinue of Sultan Selim I when Selim was still a prince; when Selim ascended the throne he became sanjak governor (mîrlivâ) of several sanjaks. In the reign of Sultan Süleyman, while serving as governor of the sanjak of Niğbolu, he died as a martyr in the war of 929 [1522-23]. His son is Hamza Bey.

His Place in the Hacı Beyzâde Family

Hüsameddin gave separate entries to many members of the Amasya family known as Hacı Beyzâde, and this İlyâs Bey is one link in that chain. Another entry in the same volume mentions a further İlyâs Bey, a son of Hacı Perviz Bey, who served as defterdar (treasurer) while Bayezid II was governor of Amasya. A beg of Yavuz Sultan Selim, he was retired because of a wound received at Çaldıran, endowed his farms at Çayköy and Dereköy to his children as a waqf in 924 [1518], and had sons named Veli and Hamza; Veli Pasha later became a beylerbeyi. Our entry, however, gives the genealogy as "son of Hamza Bey, grandson of Perviz Bey." In another record Hamza Bey appears as the son of İlyâs Bey and grandson of Perviz Bey, and after serving as bey of sanjaks such as Midilli, Aydın and Karesi he died in 989. This entry makes İlyâs the son of a Hamza Bey; either one generation has dropped out of the chain, or a different Hamza Bey is meant. The book does not allow the two to be told apart.

For the origin of the family Hüsameddin gives the following in another entry: the branch known as Hacı Beyzâde descends from Hacı Nevrûz Bey, who served as defterdar while Bayezid II was governor of Amasya, and Nevrûz Bey is said to come from the line of Baba İlyâs-ı Horasânî. This is a genealogical tradition; Hüsameddin relies on his own records, and no separate document supports it. A notable point is that the forefather who served as defterdar appears under the name Perviz in one record and Nevrûz in another. This discrepancy between the names could not be resolved from the sources.

The War of 929

Hüsameddin does not name the war. The Hijri year 929 begins in November 1522. In Ottoman sources this year is prominent for the conquest of Rhodes: Süleyman the Magnificent's Rhodes campaign set out on 21 Receb 928 [16 June 1522], and the island was surrendered on 1 Safer 929 [20 December 1522]. Whether the governor of Niğbolu took part in this campaign, and whether the war in question was in fact this campaign, could not be established; it can only be said that the date could coincide with the last weeks of the Rhodes campaign. This is an inference, not certain knowledge.

No information on this İlyâs Bey was found in other sources.
