Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • mahdûm: son
  • züamâ: zeamet holders, sipahis who held a zeamet, a military land grant of high revenue
  • ümerâ: emirs, sanjak beys
  • me'mûr: assigned, appointed
  • ba'dehû: afterwards

Of the İne Hân Line

The chain of descent that Hüsameddin gives leads back to İne Hân Bey, named in the earlier entries of the same volume: Cafer Bey is among İne Hân's sons, and Abdullah Bey is Cafer Bey's son. So Sofu Bey is the son of İne Hân's grandson. Since İne Hân is written to have died around 810 [1407-08], Sofu Bey becoming a sanjak bey in 892 [1486-87] fits the roughly eighty years in between.

The War with Egypt

The "Egyptian War" in the text refers to the war fought against the Mamluks in the time of Bayezid II. The war began in 1485 and lasted until 1491; the fighting took place largely in Cilicia, around Adana and Tarsus. The army under the governor of Karaman, Karagöz Mehmed Pasha, was defeated before Adana in February 1486; in March of the same year the reinforcements brought by Hersekzâde Ahmed Pasha were also routed and Hersekzâde was taken prisoner. In 1487 a new and large army was sent under Grand Vizier Koca Davud Pasha; the fleet and Dulkadır forces moved together with this army. The date of appointment that Hüsameddin gives as 892 [1486-87] corresponds to the years of this campaign. With which unit Sofu Bey served, in which engagement, and where and when he died are not mentioned in the sources we read.

Yenişehir

Hüsameddin does not say which Yenişehir Sofu Bey was bey of. Since there is more than one place of this name in Ottoman lands, the location of the sanjak cannot be understood from the text.
