Basra and Lahsa
After Basra came under Ottoman rule it was reorganized; the survey register of 1552 shows the first organization. Until the end of the 16th century it was governed as a beylerbeylik with salaries, and its beylerbeyis, because they were continually in conflict with the Arab tribes, could not remain long in office and were at times besieged in the city. Lahsa, for its part, was first attached to the beylerbeylik of Basra (1547) and was probably raised to a beylerbeylik after 1553. The Âl-i Hamîd branch of the Benî Hâlid tribe lived in the region and received 200,000 akçes a year; the tribe had ruled Lahsa before Ottoman rule as well. Hüsameddin's phrase "province of Lahsa" agrees with this arrangement. In which war in Basra the bey showed valour, in which years he served, and the date of his death are not mentioned in the sources we read.
