In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He was the son of Üçbaş Nûreddîn Hamza Efendi, mufti of Amasya, one of the great scholars. In Istanbul he completed his studies under Tâczâde Sa'dî Çelebi of Amasya, became a mülâzim (candidate) of his teacher, and then a müderris (madrasa professor). It was seen in the palace register of 927 [1520-21] that fifty akçes a day were given to him from the palace treasury.

Then he entered the career of judges and became judge of large towns. Serving as a judge in the province of Rumelia for some forty years, he died around 963 [1555-56]. He was a scholar among the great judges of Rumelia. His son is Mehmed Çelebi.

His Teacher Tâcîzâde Sâdî Çelebi

Sâdî Çelebi, under whom Üçbaşzâde studied in Istanbul, was born in Amasya. His father Tâcî Bey was a poet, secretary and calligrapher; he served as defterdar to Prince Bayezid in Amasya and held the post of Amasya seraskier. His elder brother Tâcîzâde Câfer Çelebi was executed in 1515 by Sultan Selim the Grim while serving as kazasker, and Sâdî Çelebi buried his body. Sâdî Çelebi taught at the Gazi Murad Madrasa in Bursa, had gone to Istanbul before 909 [1503-04], is mentioned in a record of November 1503 as a müderris of the Ali Pasha Madrasa, and was then appointed to one of the Semâniye madrasas. He stayed in Istanbul until the end of his life, went on the pilgrimage at some point, retired on 80 akçes, and when he died was buried in the garden of the primary school he had built in Balat. He was regarded as a master of Arabic composition, and Hüsameddin's Amasya Tarihi also records that he wrote a work called Hayrü'l-ahlâm describing the beauties of Amasya. Hüsameddin's statement that Üçbaşzâde took lessons from this teacher in Istanbul does not contradict the records that Sâdî Çelebi stayed in Istanbul until the end of his life.

A Note on the Dates

The text says that Üçbaşzâde served "some forty years" as a judge in Rumelia, that in 927 [1520-21] he drew a salary from the palace treasury as a müderris, and that he died around 963 [1555-56]. Forty years is longer than the thirty-six years from 927 to the date of death; so it is probable that "forty years" is a round expression or that it also includes offices held before 927. This is an inference. No information was found in other sources on Üçbaş Nûreddîn Hamza Efendi, on the places where Üçbaşzâde Eyyûb Efendi served as judge, or on his son Mehmed Çelebi.
