In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He was the son of Boyacızâde İbrâhim Bey and the brother of the Alaybeyi of Amasya Veliyyüddîn Bey. On the twenty-eighth day of Muharram 1096 [1684-85] he became sanjak governor of Amasya. Since he himself was in the Rumeli War, his brother Veliyyüddîn Bey became mütesellim of Amasya.

In Safar, when Kuloğlu Halil Ağa was dismissed, Hatîboğlu Küçük Mehmed Ağa became city steward (kethüdayeri) of Amasya. In Rabi' al-Awwal, with the dismissal of Mufti Bayram Îydî Efendi, the former nakîb Seyyid Mustafa Efendi became mufti of Amasya, and with the dismissal of Saçlı Emîr, Seyyid Halil Ağa became deputy of the nakîbüleşraf.

Then Mustafa Pasha became beylerbeyi of Sivas, and his kethüda Türedizâde Kâsım Ağa of Amasya became mütesellim of Sivas. In Rabi' al-Thani the mektupçu of the grand vizierate, Mehmed Bey of Amasya, became reisülküttap.

On the first day of Rajab, when the nakîb Seyyid Halil Ağa was dismissed, Seyyid Mustafa Ağa, brother of Mumcuzâde Seyyid Ahmed Ağa, became deputy of the nakîbüleşraf, and the reins of the sayyids' administration were handed to Mumcuoğlu.

At this time Seyyid Mustafa Efendi of Amasya, the treasury's rûznamçeci, became governor of the sanjak of Teke and warden of Candia with the rank of beylerbeyi of Rumeli, and Halil Ağa of Amasya, voivode of Galata, became governor of Bursa and warden of Chania with the rank of Rumeli; both went to Crete.

On the first day of Muharram 1097 [1685], in place of Kadı Ahmed Efendi, Mumcu Velîzâde Hacı Mehmed Efendi of Amasya became kadı of Amasya. In the middle of Muharram, when the Bey of Amasya Mahmûd Bey died in the Rumeli War, the sanjak of Amasya was given to the former Beylerbeyi of Maraş, Yûsuf Pasha.

The Boyacızâdes

This entry shows that, after a succession of outside beys, one of Amasya's own families rose to the sanjak governorship. The rise of Boyacızâde Mahmûd Bey can be followed step by step in Hüsameddin's record. In 1090 [1679] he became alaybeyi of Amasya, in 1092 was promoted to the mirlivâlık and left his place to his brother Veliyyüddîn Bey. In 1096 the sanjak of Amasya was given to him. Since he himself was at the front, the sanjak once again passed into the hands of his brother Veliyyüddîn Bey; that is, the family held both the alaybeyilik and the mütesellimship together. No information was found in other sources about Mahmûd Bey himself.

The family's weight in this period comes from the kinship formed with Kara İbrâhim Pasha. In the previous entry Hüsameddin writes that Veliyyüddîn Bey was the maternal uncle of the grand vizier's nephew Osmân Bey and for this reason gained great influence. Mahmûd Bey's sanjak governorship also coincides with Kara İbrâhim Pasha's grand vizierate. The later life of Veliyyüddîn Bey, of the two brothers, will be tied even more closely to the fate of Yeğen Osmân Pasha.

The Rumeli War

The years in which Mahmûd Bey was in the "Rumeli War" and died there are the heavy war years after the defeat at Vienna. According to the entry on Kara İbrâhim Pasha in the TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi, the Austrian war that began with the Siege of Vienna turned, with the entry of Venice and Poland, into a war on several fronts, and because of the shortage of troops and matériel cities and fortresses began to be lost one by one, especially on the Hungarian and Morea fronts. The grand vizier did not go to the front himself but contented himself with sending troops, munitions, and provisions from Edirne. That the sanjak governors of Amasya hardly ever stopped at their sanjaks in these years and governed through mütesellims is a consequence of the sanjak's troops being kept constantly at the front.

The Reisülküttap Mehmed Bey of Amasya

The mektupçu of the grand vizierate Mehmed Bey of Amasya, whom Hüsameddin says became reisülküttap in Rabi' al-Thani 1096, is the Sefer Ağazâde Mehmed Bey who appeared in the previous entry as mektupçu of the grand vizierate. According to the biography of Kara İbrâhim Pasha in Hüsameddin's biographical volumes, Sefer Ağazâde Mehmed and his brother Mustafa Efendi are the sons of Kara İbrâhim Pasha's sister, and they were called "Yeğen Mehmed" and "Yeğen Mustafa." In the same place Hüsameddin also calls Mehmed Bey, by his later title, "Elçi Mehmed Pasha."

The list of reisülküttaps prepared by Recep Ahıshalı from archival documents gives a different date for this appointment. In the list Mehmed Bey, nicknamed "Ebû Kavuk," who was mektupçu of the grand vizierate, is recorded as brought to the reisülküttaplık on 23 Muharram 1097 [20 December 1685] and remaining in this post until 27 Dhu al-Qa'da 1098 [4 October 1687]. The reisülküttap before him is Koca Mustafa Efendi, in office from 1 Muharram 1095 to 23 Muharram 1097. According to this, Hüsameddin's Rabi' al-Thani 1096 is about nine months earlier than the archival record. The date in the archive falls immediately after Kara İbrâhim Pasha's dismissal on 21-22 Muharram 1097; Hüsameddin too says in the next entry that after the grand vizier's dismissal "Reisülküttap Mehmed Bey of Amasya remained in his post." That the Mehmed Bey in the archival list and Hüsameddin's Sefer Ağazâde Mehmed Bey are the same person is inferred from the sameness of their earlier posts and the overlap of dates.

A Year among the Sayyids

The part of the entry concerning the sayyids shows that the deputy nakîbüleşrafship changed hands three times within a year. In the previous entry Mumcuzâde Seyyid Ahmed Ağa had been dismissed and Saçlı Emîr Ömer Ağa put in his place. In this entry first Seyyid Halil Ağa and a few months later Mumcuzâde's brother Seyyid Mustafa Ağa come to the office, and, in Hüsameddin's phrase, the administration of the sayyids passes again to the Mumcuoğlu family. That at the end of the same year Hacı Mehmed Efendi, bearing the name "Mumcu Velîzâde," is also brought to the kadılık of Amasya is noteworthy; Hüsameddin says nothing about this kadı's kinship with the Mumcuzâdes.

The Men of Amasya Who Went to Crete

That Seyyid Mustafa Efendi of Amasya, the treasury's rûznamçeci, was appointed to Candia and the Galata voivode Halil Ağa to the wardenship of Chania shows that in these years the men of Amasya rose to high posts not only in the chanceries of the grand vizierate but also in provincial administration. Seyyid Mustafa Efendi will appear two entries later as defterdar under the name "Vizier Seyyid Mustafa Pasha İkincizâde, warden of Euboea." In a study on Cafer Pasha and in sources on Sarı Süleyman Pasha it is recorded that Defterdar Seyyid Mustafa Pasha went from the camp to Belgrade with the grand vizier in the autumn of 1687. According to İsmail Katgı's study of the 1687 revolt, however, the rebels some time later killed this defterdar. Hüsameddin does not tell this end in these entries; the subject is treated separately in the notes of the entry on Seyyid Ahmed Bey.
