Amasyalıdır. Pervâne Bey Mahallesi a‘yânından es-Seyyid Mehmed Ağa bin Kınalı Osmân’ın mahdûmudur. Bu Kınalı Osmân’a “Kınalı Mumcu” dendiğinden evlâdı Mumcuzâdelikle iştihâr etdi.
1098 senesi cumâdelâhiresinin on dördüncü günü Amasya sancağı beyi olup kethüdâsı Pehlivan Kürt Ahmed Ağazâde es-Seyyid [184] Ebûbekir Ağa’yı Amasya mütesellimi nasb etdi. Kendisi dâru’l-harpte kaldı.
Ebûbekir Ağa, Amasya’ya geldikte nakîbü’l-eşrâf kâ’im-makâmı es-Seyyid Mustafa Ağa bütün sancağın hâkimi ve merci-i benâmı olup sancağın bütün umûr ve husûsâtı re‘yine müfevvaz oldu.
Cumâdelâhirenin yirmi altıncı günü Müftü Bayram Îydî Efendi fetvâdan, Nasûhzâde el-Hâc Hamza Ağa şehir kethüdâlığından azledilip yerlerine müftü-i esbak Pîrî Mehmed Efendi, Amasya müftüsü ve Habîb Ağazâde Mehmed Ağa, şehir kethüdâsı oldu.
Receb gurresinde Kadı el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi’nin müddeti bitdiğinden Hacı Efendizâde İbrâhim Efendi, Amasya kadısı oldu. Yeğen Osmân Bey’in Konya havâlisinde cemiyeti ve tecâvüzü nazar-ı dikkati câlib olduğundan oradan kaldırmak mülâhazasıyla uhdesine bâ-rütbe-i mîrimîran-ı Karahisar-ı Şarkî sancağı verilip Rumeli’ne hareketi emr u ta‘cil edildi.
Yeğen Osmân Paşa, Ilgın’dan kalkıp maiyet-i mevcûdesiyle beraber Rumeli’ne müteveccihen hareket etdi. [185]
Kezâlik Amasya Alaybeyi Boyacızâde Veli Bey, kethüdâyeri Hatîbzâde Küçük Mehmed Ağa, yeniçeri serdârı Apardı İbrâhim Ağa, bütün zu‘amâ, erbâb-ı tımâr ve yeniçerileri alıp Rumeli’ne gitmişlerdi. Peçelizâde Hasan Bey alaybeyi vekîli İsmâil Ağa da serdâr vekîli olup Amasya sancağını muhafazaya me’mûr olmuşlardı.
Sultân Bâyezîd Vâizi Abdurrahman Efendi Kurban Bayramı’nda zaleme-i sâdâtı zem ü takbîh ederek seyyidleri dîlgîr etdiğinden derhal azledilip yerine Müfessir Hızır Efendizâde İbrâhim Efendi, Sultân Bâyezîd Câmii kürsü şeyhi oldu.
Rumeli’ne giden Yeğen Osmân Paşa’nın maiyetinde bulunan cemiyet oldukça mühim bir kuvvetdi. Sadr-ı a’zam Süleyman Paşa bu kuvveti zihninde büyültüp Kara İbrâhim Paşa’yı sadârete iâde ve kendisini makâmından tenzîl edecek kadar mühim gördüğünden bîçâre Kara İbrâhim Paşa’nın Rodos’ta i’dâmını telhîs ve arz etmişdi.
Şa’bânın yirmi beşinci günü bâ-fermân-ı âlî Kara İbrâhim Paşa Rodos’ta i’dâm edildi.
Yeğen Osmân Paşa, amcası Kara İbrâhim Paşa’nın i’dâmından pek ziyade müteessir oldu. İntikam sâikasıyla fenâ maksatlar tâkibine başladı. Orduda bulunan Sadr-ı a’zam Süleyman Paşa ile Defterdâr es-Seyyid Mustafa Paşa’ya ve Reîsü’l-küttâb Yeğen Mehmed Bey’e beyhûde yere husûmet etdi. [186] Bunları amcasının i’dâmına sebeb görüyordu.
Süleyman Paşa başına gelecek felâketi anladığından can korkusuna düşdü. Yanındaki vüzerâ ve ricâl-i devletle kaçıp Belgrat’a can attı.
In Modern English
He was a native of Amasya, a son of Seyyid Mehmed Ağa, son of Kınalı Osmân, one of the notables of the Pervâne Bey Quarter. Because this Kınalı Osmân was called "Kınalı Mumcu" (Henna-Dyed Candlemaker), his descendants became known as the Mumcuzâdes.
On the fourteenth day of Cemaziyelahir 1098 [1687] he became sanjak governor of Amasya and appointed his steward (kethüda), Seyyid Ebûbekir Ağa, son of Pehlivan Kürt Ahmed Ağa, as mütesellim (deputy governor) of Amasya. He himself remained in the war zone.
When Ebûbekir Ağa arrived in Amasya, Seyyid Mustafa Ağa, the deputy of the naqib al-ashraf (head of the descendants of the Prophet), became the ruler of the whole sanjak and the well-known authority to whom everyone turned; all the affairs and problems of the sanjak were left to his judgment.
On the twenty-sixth day of Cemaziyelahir the mufti Bayram Îydî Efendi was dismissed from the issuing of fatwas, and Nasûhzâde Hacı Hamza Ağa from the stewardship of the city. In their places the former mufti Pîrî Mehmed Efendi became mufti of Amasya, and Habîb Ağazâde Mehmed Ağa became steward of the city.
On the first day of Receb, as the term of the kadı (judge) Hacı Mehmed Efendi had expired, Hacı Efendizâde İbrâhim Efendi became kadı of Amasya. Because Yeğen Osmân Bey's gathering of men and his attacks in the Konya region had drawn attention, he was given the sanjak of Karahisâr-ı Şarkî with the rank of beylerbeyi, with the idea of removing him from that area, and he was ordered and pressed to set out for Rumeli.
The mütesellim of Amasya, Seyyid Ebûbekir Ağa, acted as he pleased in Amasya with the men he had gathered around himself from among the Kurds living around the village of Ulus, where he was born. He backed the seyyids in every move they made and used these men to silence the people.
Yeğen Osmân Pasha set out from Ilgın toward Rumeli with the retinue that accompanied him. He behaved flagrantly wherever he stopped and gave rise to a great many complaints. However it came about, he crossed into Rumeli and joined the Imperial Army on the plain of Belgrade.
Likewise, the alaybeyi (commander of the timar-holding cavalry) of Amasya, Boyacızâde Veli Bey, the kethüdayeri (representative of the sipahis), Hatîbzâde Küçük Mehmed Ağa, and the janissary commander, Apardı İbrâhim Ağa, had taken all the zeamet and timar holders and the janissaries and gone to Rumeli. Peçelizâde Hasan Bey was appointed acting alaybeyi and İsmâil Ağa acting commander to guard the sanjak of Amasya.
Abdurrahman Efendi, the preacher of the Sultan Bayezid Mosque, offended the seyyids by condemning and censuring their oppressors on the Feast of the Sacrifice, and was dismissed at once. In his place Müfessir Hızır Efendizâde İbrâhim Efendi became the chair-holding sheikh (kürsü şeyhi) of the Sultan Bayezid Mosque.
The host accompanying Yeğen Osmân Pasha in Rumeli was a rather significant force. Grand Vizier Süleyman Pasha magnified this force in his mind. He considered it important enough to bring Kara İbrâhim Pasha back to the grand vizierate and remove himself from office, and so he submitted to the sultan in writing that the unfortunate Kara İbrâhim Pasha should be executed on Rhodes.
On the twenty-fifth day of Şaban, by the sultan's decree, Kara İbrâhim Pasha was executed on Rhodes. He suffered the penalty for having laid hands on a great commander such as Kara Mustafa Pasha, his own benefactor. But this crime also cost Süleyman Pasha his head.
Yeğen Osmân Pasha was deeply affected by the execution of his uncle Kara İbrâhim Pasha; in a spirit of revenge he pursued evil aims. He needlessly harbored enmity against Grand Vizier Süleyman Pasha, Treasurer Seyyid Mustafa Pasha and Chief Secretary Yeğen Mehmed Bey, who were with the army, regarding them as the cause of his uncle's execution.
Yet neither the treasurer nor the chief secretary knew anything of it; moreover, both were tied to the executed grand vizier by allegiance as well as kinship. The steward of the commander-in-chief Süleyman Pasha was Dursun Mehmed Ağa of Çorum.
Because of the commander's harsh temperament and his great mistakes in directing the army, the army had slipped out of obedience, and Yeğen Osmân Pasha had become something like the army's supreme commander. Realizing this, Yeğen Pasha set about having Süleyman Pasha removed from the grand vizierate and the command.
Süleyman Pasha understood the disaster that would befall him and fell into fear for his life. He fled with the viziers and state notables who were with him and rushed to Belgrade. The reins of the army's administration passed into the hands of the officers, and especially Yeğen Osmân Pasha.
The next day Yeğen Pasha and the army officers gathered in the vacated commander's tent. There Hatîbzâde Küçük Mehmed Ağa, the kethüdayeri of Amasya and a famous member of the silahdar corps, gained the floor, being extremely brave and a fluent speaker.
Küçük Mehmed Ağa addressed all those present and explained that the commander had fled together with the janissary agha and the treasurer, and that the army needed a commander-in-chief.
He gathered the views of all the corps commanders and had them accept that Köprülü Siyavuş Pasha, governor of Aleppo and son-in-law of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, be brought to the grand vizierate and that Süleyman Pasha be deposed. A joint petition prepared there was sent to the sultan.
At the beginning of Zilkade, in line with the army's wish, Süleyman Pasha was dismissed and executed. Köprülü Siyavuş Pasha became grand vizier and commander-in-chief, Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Mustafa Pasha became deputy grand vizier, and another Köprülü, Şa'bân Ağa, became steward of the grand vizierate.
Meanwhile a rabble gathered around the mütesellim of Amasya, Seyyid Ebûbekir Ağa, and the brother of the mirliva (sanjak governor) Seyyid Ahmed Bey, acting in the name of the seyyids and the Kurds, had gone very far, declaring notables and common people guilty for unimaginable reasons, oppressing them and collecting fines. The notables and the people in turn had complained about the seyyids.
But Seyyid Ahmed Bey leaned on Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Mustafa Pasha. For that reason he felt no worry for himself over the complaints.
However, since it was not deemed fitting for the complaints to continue while the administration of the sanjak of Amasya was in his hands, Seyyid Ahmed Bey was transferred at the end of the year to the sanjak of Bolu with the rank of beylerbeyi, and the sanjak of Amasya was given to the governor of Bolu, Mirza Mehmed Pasha.

The Mumcuzâdes
This entry tells how Mumcuzâde Seyyid Ahmed, the figure whose name appears most often in this part of volume 4, finally rose to the sanjak governorship of Amasya. In this entry Hüsameddin explains that the family took the name "Mumcuzâde" from their ancestor Kınalı Osmân, known as Kınalı Mumcu. The biographical volumes contain records about later generations of the family. Mumcuzâde Seyyid Hacı Ahmed Ağa, son of Seyyid Mustafa Ağa, son of Seyyid Mehmed Ağa, son of Kınalı Osmân, one of the notables of Amasya, died after 1144 and is described as "the nephew of Seyyid Ahmed Pasha, beylerbeyi of Kastamonu." Another Mumcuzâde Ahmed Ağa, a son of Seyyid Hüseyin Ağa, son of Seyyid Mehmed Ağa, served many times as deputy of the naqib al-ashraf, was made chief of the seyyids for his service in the Iranian wars, and died in 1149. Hüsameddin introduces him too as "the other nephew of Seyyid Pasha."
When these records are put together, it appears that the Seyyid Ahmed Bey of our entry is the "Seyyid Ahmed Pasha" who later rose as far as the beylerbeyilik of Kastamonu. For Seyyid Ahmed Bey is likewise a son of Seyyid Mehmed Ağa, son of Kınalı Osmân, and his brother Seyyid Mustafa Ağa was appointed deputy of the naqib al-ashraf several times in these entries. This conclusion comes from comparing Hüsameddin's records in separate places. Members of the family also repeatedly held the post of deputy naqib al-ashraf in the first half of the eighteenth century.
A local study also sheds light on Seyyid Ahmed's long history in Amasya politics. According to it, Mumcuzâde Seyyid Ahmed Ağa, one of the close circle of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, became steward of the city of Amasya in 1067 [1656] with a decree he brought from Istanbul, soon began lodging complaints against the mufti of the time, Hızır b. Muhammed el-Amâsî, and in the end caused the mufti to be exiled to Cyprus. Hüsameddin's mention of him as a "Köprülü partisan" and his statement in this entry that he leaned on Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Mustafa Pasha are consistent with this old allegiance. The Köprülüs' return to power in the autumn of 1687 coincides with Seyyid Ahmed's strongest period.
The Pervâne Bey Quarter and Ulus Village
The Pervâne Bey Quarter, which Hüsameddin mentions as the Mumcuzâdes' neighborhood, is the quarter where the Burmalı Minare Mosque stands. According to Derya Aslan's study of the waqf of the Burmalı Minare Mosque, the mosque was built in 640 [1242] by Ferruh Bey, one of the viziers of the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan II. Gıyâseddin Keyhüsrev, and his brother, the treasurer Yûsuf Bey. İzzeddin Mehmed Pervâne Bey, Ferruh Bey's son-in-law, drew up the mosque's waqf deed in 699 [1299-1300] and lived in this quarter until 700 [1300-01], so the quarter took the name "Pervâne Bey Quarter." Today the quarter is called Dere Quarter, and the mosque is still open for worship.
As for Ulus Village, given as the birthplace of the mütesellim Seyyid Ebûbekir Ağa, and the Kurdish population around it, no information was found in the sources consulted.
Yeğen Osmân's Departure for Rumeli
Hüsameddin writes that Yeğen Osmân was given the sanjak of "Karahisâr-ı Şarkî" with the rank of beylerbeyi. In other sources, the place where he served as sanjak governor and serçeşme (troop leader) is given as Karahisâr-ı Sâhib, that is, present-day Afyonkarahisar. It is possible that the two Karahisars are confused in Hüsameddin's record; which is correct could not be determined with certainty from the sources consulted.
The Execution of Kara İbrâhim Pasha
Hüsameddin writes that Kara İbrâhim Pasha was executed on Rhodes on 25 Şaban 1098 [early July 1687]. The TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi (Encyclopedia of Islam of the Turkish Religious Foundation) also places the execution in Şaban 1098 [June-July 1687] and adds that the pasha was killed by the Chief Gatekeeper Kör Mustafa Bey, that his body was buried on Rhodes, and that his severed head was brought to the capital. On the reason for the execution, however, two accounts diverge. Hüsameddin ties the execution decree to the petition of Grand Vizier Süleyman Pasha, who feared the force of Yeğen Osmân. According to the encyclopedia, by contrast, Receb Pasha, one of his rivals in the capital, wrote letters in the former grand vizier's name to the janissary notables and to the bandits, saying "bring me to the grand vizierate and whatever you wish will be given"; he sealed them with the grand vizier's seal that had remained with the pasha's seal-keeper, showed them to Mehmed IV, and thus obtained the execution decree. The two accounts do not exclude each other; both show the fear that the possibility of Kara İbrâhim Pasha's return to the grand vizierate aroused in his rivals.
The Rout of 1687 and the Army Mutiny
The second half of the entry tells, through an Amasya-based eye, the great army uprising known in Ottoman history as the revolt of 1687. According to Fikret Sarıcaoğlu's entry on Siyavuş Pasha, the events began with the battle of Siklós on 3 Şevval 1098 [12 August 1687], in which Grand Vizier Süleyman Pasha was routed while changing position. Some Western historians call this clash the Second Battle of Mohács. The grand vizier's wish to send the army to defend the fortress of Eger, the roll-call of salaries he had made, and his new arrangements angered the soldiers; the army revolted on 23 Şevval [1 September] and the next day, saying "he is an elderly vizier," chose the governor of Aleppo, Siyavuş Pasha, as army deputy. On 27 Şevval [5 September] Süleyman Pasha was forced to take the sacred banner and flee to Belgrade.
The most striking detail in Hüsameddin's account is the role of the Amasya kethüdayeri Hatîbzâde Küçük Mehmed Ağa in the revolt. This detail is also confirmed by other sources. According to Sarıcaoğlu, while fleeing, Süleyman Pasha issued an order to have the stewards of Tokat, Sivas, Teke and Amasya, Yeğen Osmân Pasha, a janissary officer and a private seized as the ringleaders of the revolt. In some sources listing the ringleaders, the name "Küçük Mehmed" appears first among the sipahis. İsmail Katgı, relying on the history of Treasurer Sarı Mehmed Pasha, also names ringleaders such as Küçük Mehmed, Fetvacı Çavuş, Kandilci and Hacı Halil among those who truly incited the army. Thus Hüsameddin's Küçük Mehmed Ağa of Amasya, who took the floor in the commander's tent and had Siyavuş Pasha's grand vizierate accepted, appears in the other sources as well as one of the leading names of the revolt.
The grand vizierate was given to Siyavuş Pasha on 16 Zilkade 1098 [23 September 1687], and the grand vizier's seal and the sacred banner were handed to him on 21 Zilkade at the stage of Niš. Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Mustafa Pasha became second vizier and deputy of the stirrup (rikâb kaymakamı) on 30 Zilkade 1098 [7 October 1687]. That Hüsameddin lumps these appointments into "the beginning of Zilkade" comes from his summarizing a process of several weeks in a single sentence. Süleyman Pasha's execution also took place not on the same days but somewhat later. According to information based on Uzunçarşılı and the Sicill-i Osmânî, Süleyman Pasha, having returned to Istanbul, handed the seal and the sacred banner to the deputy Receb Pasha, hid in the house of a Jewish man who was his neighbor and old friend, was caught and held for a while, and was executed on 14 October 1687. Some sources also tell that Yeğen Osmân let the grand vizier slip out of the soldiers' hands; this account is not compatible with Hüsameddin's narrative.
The End of the Treasurer from Amasya
Hüsameddin specifically stresses that the treasurer and the chief secretary against whom Yeğen Osmân harbored enmity, that is, two men of Amasya, had nothing to do with the events. Of these two, the fate of Treasurer İkincizâde Seyyid Mustafa Pasha was a sad one. A study on Cafer Pasha and sources on Sarı Süleyman Pasha record that Treasurer Seyyid Mustafa Pasha went to Belgrade with the fleeing grand vizier. According to İsmail Katgı, the rebel ringleaders agreed on killing certain statesmen, above all Treasurer Seyyid Mustafa Pasha; Siyavuş Pasha could not protect the treasurer, and the rebels killed him. Thus in the same revolt one man of Amasya, Küçük Mehmed Ağa, stood among the ringleaders while another, Seyyid Mustafa Pasha, was a victim of the rebels. Hüsameddin does not mention the treasurer's death in this entry. As for Chief Secretary Yeğen Mehmed Bey, according to archival records he was removed from office on 27 Zilkade 1098 [4 October 1687].
The Seyyids' Oppression in Amasya
The last part of the entry describes the oppression in Amasya during Seyyid Ahmed Bey's sanjak governorship. The sanjak governor was at the front, his brother Seyyid Mustafa Ağa was deputy of the naqib al-ashraf, and his steward Seyyid Ebûbekir Ağa was mütesellim; that is, the whole administration of the sanjak had fallen into the hands of a single family and its men. According to Hüsameddin's record, in this period the notables and the people were forced to pay penalties on fabricated charges, and even a preacher who criticized the oppressors of the seyyids from the pulpit of the Sultan Bayezid Mosque lost his post. Because Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Mustafa Pasha stood behind Seyyid Ahmed Bey, the complaints did not affect him directly, but in the end he was transferred to Bolu with the rank of beylerbeyi and thus removed from Amasya. Mirza Mehmed Pasha, who came in his place, is a beylerbeyi whom Hüsameddin introduces in the next entry as "Iranian," who had taken refuge with the Ottoman state some twenty years earlier.
A Small Slip in the Order of the Text
Hüsameddin places the dismissal of the Sultan Bayezid preacher on the Feast of the Sacrifice in the middle of events he narrates from the months of Cemaziyelahir and Receb toward Şaban. Since the Feast of the Sacrifice falls in Zilhicce, this event either belongs to the feast of the previous year or has slipped out of place within the sequence of the narrative. The text gives no explanation on this.
