In Modern English

He was from Van. At the beginning of Safar 1074 [September 1663] he became governor of the sanjak of Amasya. Since he himself was engaged in war with the Rumeli army, Abdülcelîlzâde el-Hâc Hüseyin Ağa became mütesellim of Amasya, then Mehmed Ağa became city steward (kethüdâyeri), and es-Seyyid Mehmed Çelebi became deputy of the nakîbüleşraf.

In Rajab, Çavuşzâde Vizier Mehmed Pasha became governor of Sivas, and the Nişancı Ca'fer Pasha of Amasya was given the rank of vizier. In Sha'ban the sultan's silahdar, Hacı Efendizâde Ömer Ağa bin el-Hâc Abdülbâkî Çelebi of Amasya, became governor of Egypt with the rank of vizier. He was called "Öküz Ömer Pasha," and his ağa "Balak Hasan Ağa."

At the beginning of Shawwal, when Mufti İsmâil Efendi was dismissed, Yeğenzâde Hâfız el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi, one of the learned, became mufti of Amasya. This year the following died: Müeyyedzâde Abdülvâsî Çelebi, one of the notables, trustee of the Pervâne Bey Waqf and paternal cousin of the Nişancı Pasha; the former çavuşbaşı Hacı Beyzâde Mehmed Bey; and Hasan Beyzâde Mustafa Bey, trustee of the Yörgüç Pasha Waqf.

Ca'fer Pasha alone became trustee of the Pervâne Bey Waqf, and his paternal cousin Vâsî Çelebizâde Habîb Efendi became his deputy in Amasya. Mehmed Bey's debts passed to his sons Osman and Ali Beys as heirs. To the Yörgüç Pasha Waqf another Mustafa Bey bin Ali Bey, nephew of Mustafa Bey, became trustee.

At the beginning of Muharram 1075 [July 1664], Hayreddînzâde Mustafa Efendi, one of the great kadıs, again became kadı of Amasya in place of Kadı Abdülcelîl Efendi. Then Sefer Ağazâde Osman Ağa became trustee of the Sultan Bayezid waqfs; his predecessor Selim Bey was given a mirlivalık (sanjak governorship).

In Jumada al-Ula, when the mütesellim el-Hâc Hüseyin Ağa went to Istanbul, the city steward Mehmed Ağa became mütesellim of Amasya in his place. When Paşazâde Hüseyin Bey was dismissed, Kelekcizâde Hasan Bey became alaybeyi. On the fourth of Sha'ban, Serdârzâde Halil Pasha, dismissed from his post, came to Amasya and became trustee of the Sultan waqfs.

In Shawwal, İmâdeddîn Ömer Efendi, the şehremini of Istanbul and son of Şemseddîn Efendi of the family of Şücâeddîn Efendi, Mufti of Köprü, became bey of Jeddah; and in Dhu al-Qa'da Şişman İbrâhim Pasha became governor of Sivas.

Şeyh Nasûh Efendi bin Sinan Efendi, son of Şeyh Ya'kûb Efendi, imam of the Sultan Bayezid Mosque, and Niksarlı Çepnizâde Hüsâmeddîn Efendi, one of the great scholars and the renowned preacher of the Enderun Mosque, died. Hüsâmeddîn Efendi's son-in-law Mustafa Efendi became preacher of the Enderun Mosque, and Şeyh Mahmûd Efendi, one of the Khalwati sheikhs, became sheikh of the Mahmûd Çelebi Tekke.

In Muharram 1076 [July 1665] Abdülcelîlzâde el-Hâc Hüseyin Ağa came from Istanbul and at the beginning of Safar again became mütesellim of Amasya, and Muslî Ağa, of the seventeenth company of the sipahis, became city steward. Five days later, when the Mufti of Merzifon, Recebzâde Mehmed Efendi, died, Müftüzâde Abdullah Efendi, professor of the Merzifon Sultaniye, became mufti in his place.

On the fifteenth of Rabi' al-Thani, since Serdârzâde Halil Pasha, trustee of the Sultan waqfs, was appointed to the governorship of Sivas, Ali Ağa became trustee of the Sultan Bayezid waqfs.

In Ramadan, the city kethüda Seyyid Ahmed Ağa was dismissed at the beginning of Shawwal when it was heard that, on the pretext of inviting people to the iftar, he had gathered some of the rabble at his house and incited them; Dede Hasanzâde el-Hâc Mehmed Çelebi became city kethüda in his place. The sedition was suppressed before it broke out.

On the tenth day of Shawwal, Yakub Ağa, the backer of the former city kethüda, was also dismissed, and Yûsuf Ağa became janissary commander. Then, when the nakîb es-Seyyid Mehmed Ağa was dismissed, es-Seyyid Abdurrahman Efendi, son of es-Seyyid Yahya Efendi, one of the kadıs, who had been charged with inspecting the waqfs of Amasya, became deputy of the nakîbüleşraf.

At this time Hasan Efendi, one of the great scholars, professor of the Halil Pasha Madrasa in the town of Gümüş and mufti of Gümüş, died; Gümüşlü Halil Efendi, one of the ders-âms of Amasya, went there as professor and mufti in his place.

But because of the maneuvers of Mumcuzâde Seyyid Ahmed Ağa after his dismissal, the governor Mehmed Pasha of Van was also removed from his post in Dhu al-Qa'da. The sanjak of Amasya was given to Ferhad Pasha, Beylerbeyi of Ankara, and the Amasya alaybeyi Hasan Bey was appointed mirliva to the sanjak of Eğin.

The Amasya Silahdar Who Became Governor of Egypt

The one who rose highest among those named in the entry is Hacı Efendizâde Ömer Ağa of Amasya, sent as governor of Egypt with the rank of vizier while he was the sultan's silahdar. In the lists of Ottoman governors of Egypt, the governor who ruled Egypt between 1664 and 1667 appears as "Silahdar Ömer Pasha," and according to the same list this pasha later served as governor of Baghdad, Diyarbekir, and Erzurum. Hüsameddin's placing of the appointment in Sha'ban 1074, that is, early 1664, agrees with this information. The nickname "Öküz Ömer Pasha" that people gave him and the name "Balak Hasan Ağa" used for his ağa leave a small but vivid trace of how this rise was received in Amasya.

The same list also shows a "Şişman İbrâhim Pasha" as governor of Egypt in 1667-1668; this pasha died in office in November 1668. He may be the same person as the Şişman İbrâhim Pasha whom Hüsameddin mentions as governor of Sivas in 1075, but no record confirming this could be found.

Waqfs and Families

The entry clearly shows how the administration of Amasya's great waqfs changed hands within families. The trusteeship of the Pervâne Bey Waqf passes alone to Müeyyedzâde Ca'fer Pasha, who, as told in the previous entries, had become a partner in the waqf by proving that he was a grandson of Pîrî Ahmed Efendi; since Ca'fer Pasha was nişancı in Istanbul, his paternal cousin Habîb Efendi managed the waqf in Amasya as deputy. The trusteeship of the Yörgüç Pasha Waqf, on the other hand, passes from uncle to nephew. The Yörgüç Pasha Madrasa is also known as the madrasa where Hızır Efendi became professor in 1041 [1631].

The Halil Pasha Madrasa in the town of Gümüş (today's Gümüşhacıköy) still stands today. According to M. Baha Tanman, this building, also called the Halîliye Madrasa, was built between 816 and 818 [1413-1415] by Hacı Halil Pasha, son of Kadı Ahmed of the Kutlubeyzade family of Amasya. Halil Pasha had been appointed in 806 [1403-1404] by Çelebi Sultan Mehmed as superintendent (emin) of the silver mine in the town. The original of the madrasa's waqf deed has not survived; but a court judgment of Sha'ban 1072 (April 1662) records that lands around Gümüş and İskilip were endowed for the madrasa's expenses. This document dates from only a few years before the change of professor Hüsameddin tells of here, and shows that the madrasa was active in those years. The dome covering its courtyard probably collapsed in an earthquake, and the building was used like a tekke in the last period of the Ottoman state; today it is known more as a place of visitation because of the tomb in its courtyard of Şeyh İbrâhim Hakkı Efendi, nicknamed "Garip Hâfız."

The Mahmûd Çelebi Tekke, to whose sheikhship the Khalwati sheikh Mahmûd Efendi was appointed, is in today's Hatuniye quarter. According to Kadir Özköse, the tekke was built in 807 [1404] by Ammâdzâde Bedreddin Mahmud Çelebi, one of the well-known kadıs of Amasya, in the name of Rükneddin Mahmud Buhârî, one of the deputies of Bahâeddin Nakşbend, and was cited as the first Naqshbandi tekke of Anatolia. From the time of Bayezid II the Khalwatis served here as sheikhs; Hüsameddin's record is consistent with this information.

Mumcuoğlu's Last Move

The city kethüda Mumcuoğlu Seyyid Ahmed Ağa, whose name came to the fore in the Hızır Efendi case in the earlier entries, is this time caught gathering men at his house on the pretext of an iftar invitation and is dismissed. According to Hüsameddin's account, his maneuvers after his dismissal are effective enough to lead to the replacement even of the governor of Amasya. This suggests that even after the death of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, Mumcuoğlu kept his connections in Istanbul. Hüsameddin had earlier reported that he was finally executed; this end will be told in the following entries.

A Small Inconsistency

The entry says that Hayreddînzâde Mustafa Efendi came to the kadılık of Amasya "in place of Kadı Abdülcelîl Efendi." Yet in the previous entry the person who came to the kadılık in 1073 is given as Abdülhalîm Efendi. In the list of the kadıs of Amasya prepared on the basis of Hüsameddin's book, too, the name Abdülhalîm Efendi appears for the year 1073. The "Abdülcelîl" here is most likely a slip or a typesetting error. Similarly, at the end of the entry, the pasha to whom the sanjak is given appears in the text as "Ferdad Pasha"; the next entry clearly shows that this person is Ferhad Pasha.

No information was found in other sources about Kürt (of Van) Mehmed Pasha himself, the Enderun preacher Niksarlı Çepnizâde Hüsâmeddîn Efendi, or İmâdeddîn Ömer Efendi, who became bey of Jeddah.
