From Köprülü's Silahdar to Governor of Amasya
Deli Murtezâ Pasha is, in Hüsameddin's account, one of the men of Amasya raised under Köprülü Mehmed Pasha. According to Abdülkadir Özcan, Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha too had served as Köprülü's silahdar and then moved on to beylerbeyiliks. Murtezâ Pasha's path is similar.
That there were other Murtaza Pashas in the same period makes it hard to trace the man in today's sources. In Mücteba İlgürel's entry on Köprülü Mehmed Pasha there is mention of Murtaza Pasha, Beylerbeyi of Diyarbekir, who was charged with suppressing the revolt of Abaza Hasan Pasha and was defeated at Ilgın on 15 Rabi' al-Awwal 1069 (11 December 1658). Whether this pasha is the same person as Hüsameddin's "Deli Murtezâ Pasha" could not be verified from documents. According to Hüsameddin's next entry, Deli Murtezâ Pasha became beylerbeyi of Sivas in 1083 and, having imprisoned some sayyids in the sayyid affair that broke out in Amasya, was complained of and dismissed from the governorship of Sivas in Jumada al-Thani of the same year.
The Death of Nişancı Ca'fer Pasha and His Waqfs
Ca'fer Pasha, whose death is reported in the entry, marks the end of a career followed through the earlier entries. Ca'fer Ağa, of the Müeyyedzâde family, according to Hüsameddin, came to Amasya in 1064 while kilar kethüdâsı in the Enderun, proved that he was a grandson of Pîrî Ahmed Efendi, and became co-trustee of the Pervâne Bey Waqf. In 1072, with Köprülü's support, he became nişancı, in 1073 received the rank of beylerbeyi of Rumeli, and in 1074 became vizier; with the death of his paternal cousin Abdülvâsî Çelebi he had remained the sole trustee of the waqf. With his death in Rabi' al-Awwal 1080 [August 1669] the administration of the waqf was divided between his sons and his paternal cousin. No information was found about Ca'fer Pasha in other sources.
The founder of the waqf known as Pervâne Bey is not stated in the text. Abdulhalim Durma writes that the Amasya mevlevîhane is recorded in the registers as "the mevlevîhane of the late Alâeddin Pervâne" and that its waqfs were arranged in 1314 by Alâeddin Ali Pervâne Bey. Whether the waqf administered by the Müeyyedzades has any connection with this Pervâne Bey cannot be understood from the text.
Waqfs Given in Lieu of Retirement
The entry says that the kapıcıbaşı Sarı Ahmed Ağa retired, being given the trusteeship of the waqf of the ağas Hüseyin and Fîrûz. This shows that the trusteeship of a waqf could be given to retired officials as a means of livelihood. The same waqf appears similarly in Hüsameddin's later entries: in 1106 İnekçi Hüseyin Ağa, who had left the bostancıbaşılık and cebecibaşılık, also became trustee of the waqfs of the ağas Hüseyin and Fîrûz in lieu of retirement. The trusteeship of the Sultan Bayezid waqfs had likewise been seen many times in the earlier entries given to retired or dismissed beys.
No information was found in other sources about Kara Abdî Bey or Hocazâde Abdurrahman Efendi. Kara Abdî Bey's son Mehmed Ağa appears again as mütesellim of Amasya in the next two entries.
