In Modern English
He was a native of Zile. On the first day of Rebîülevvel 1052 [1642] he became mutasarrıf (governor administering the sanjak) of Amasya for the second time. However, since he himself was in Zile, he sent his relative Hüseyin Ağa as mütesellim (deputy governor) of Amasya. After a while he came himself, and Hüseyin Ağa became his kethüda.
On the tenth day of Rebîülevvel, Bağdatlıoğlu Osmân Ağa, who for some time had turned the people against himself by his wilful conduct, was dismissed, and Hâbilzâde Veli Bey, one of the notables of Amasya, became city kethüda. In the month of Recep, with the dismissal of Gürcü Ali Bey, Çavuşzâde Hasan Bey became alaybeyi of Amasya, and in the month of Şevval, with the dismissal of Dursunzâde, Yahyâ Efendi again became mufti of Amasya.
In the month of Zilkade, Gevik Mehmed Ağa of Amasya, one of the çavuşes of the Exalted Court and nüzul emini (official in charge of the army's provisions) in Istanbul, died; his properties in Amasya passed to his sons, Ahmed, Mahmûd and İbrâhim Ağa. In the month of Zilhicce the sanjak of Amasya was given to Ahmed Pasha, Beylerbeyi of Kars.

Who Murtezâ Pasha Was
In the previous entry Hüsameddin introduces this pasha as "the former Beylerbeyi of Çıldır, Murtezâ Pasha." A locally compiled list of the governors of the province of Çıldır records that a man named Murtaza Pasha governed this province, whose seat was Çıldır, between 1636 and 1639. This date agrees with the adjective "sâbık" (former) that Hüsameddin uses in 1642. He must not be confused with other pashas of the same name. Damad Murtaza Pasha, who served in Buda, Silistra and Revan and died in Revan in 1636, died before this date; Murtaza Pasha, who had Abaza Hasan Pasha seized in Aleppo in 1659 and defended Azak in 1695, belongs to a generation later. No information was found in other sources on the first governorship of Amasya of Hüsameddin's Murtezâ Pasha of Zile, or on his family in Zile.
The Local Administrators of the Provinces
The notable feature of the entry is that the mutasarrıf stayed in his own town and governed the sanjak through a relative. In the seventeenth century sanjak governors were often away on campaign or elsewhere, and affairs were conducted through local men such as the mütesellim, the city kethüda, the alaybeyi and the kethüdâyeri. These offices, too, kept circulating among a few long-established families of Amasya: the Bağdatlıoğulları, the Çavuşzâdes, the Dursunzâdes and the Hâbilzâdes. Turan Açık, who worked on the Amasya sharia court registers, shows that in the first half of the seventeenth century the kapıkulu sipahis who had settled in the provinces turned into a local group that seized the city's administrative posts and almost monopolised tax-farming and state-revenue business, while trading and accumulating property. The dismissals and appointments that Hüsameddin lists in this short entry are a cross-section of that group's internal rivalries.
The dismissal of Bağdatlıoğlu Osmân Ağa for conduct that alienated the people can be followed in the next two entries as well: the same man becomes city kethüda again soon afterwards. The alaybeyi office of Çavuşzâde Hasan Bey is a link in the family's long association with that post; according to Hüsameddin's biographies of the emirs, Çavuşzâde Hüseyin Bey of the same family was alaybeyi of Amasya four times for a year each, in 1053, 1056, 1060 and 1064.
