Original Text (Ottoman Turkish)

Amasya beylerbeyi Seyfeddîn Torumtay evlâdından Nâsıreddîn Muhammed Bey bin Mübârizeddîn Mûsâ Bey'in oğlu olup Amasyalıdır. Irâk hâkimi Büyük Şeyh Hasan'ın inhizâmına binâ'en kazandığı şöhret sâyesinde 737 senesi evâ'ilinde Amasya emîri oldu. Âzerîler'in nüfûz ve ikbâli hitâma erdi. Küçük Şeyh Hasan Bey, Anadolu'da Büyük Şeyh Hasan Bey'in yerini tutdu.

Amasya defterdârı Büyük Şemseddîn Muhammed Nahcıvânî ihtifâ edib yerine Gümüşlüzâde Emîr Celâleddîn Abdullah Çelebi müstevfî oldu. Ya‘kûb Şâh oğlu Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Bey cândâr, Musliheddîn Kutlu Bey muhtesib oldu. Kadı ve nâibi yerlerinde kaldı. Mevlânâ Rükneddîn Ahmed Sinôbî sadru'l-ulemâ ve müftî-i belde oldu.

Bu esnâda sahne-i siyâsetde üç sîmânın yıldızı parlakdı: Ya'kûb Şâh, Eretna, Ulu Beyler.

Mü'ellifin "Emîr Eretne" dediği, Sivas emîr-i kebîri meşhûr Reşîdeddîn Eretna Bey'dir. "Evlâd-ı Emîr Torumtay" dediği Emîr Şeyh Hasan-ı Sagîr'in serdârı ve Amasya vâlîsi olan Torumtay oğlu Ya'kûb Şâh ve evlâdıdır. [18]

"Evlâd-ı Sebüktây" dediği de Tokat emîri ve Şeyh Hasan-ı Sagîr'in gözdesi olan Sebüktay oğlu Mühezzebeddîn Ulu Bey ve evlâdıdır.

Ancak Eretna Bey pek zekî ve siyâsî bir zât idi. Amasya ümerâsından Baba İlyâs Horasânî oğulları Kutlu, İlyâs, Mes'ûd Beyler'i ve Türkmen beylerinden Kürt ve Taşan Beyler'i birer sûretle elde ederek Ya'kûb Şâh nüfûzunu kırmak istiyordu.

Nûreddîn Kutlu Bey, vezîr-i meşhûr Şemseddîn Mahmûd Tuğrâ'î bin Baba İlyâs'ın mahdûmu Emîr Celâleddîn Fîrûz Bey'in oğludur. Birâderleri İlyâs ve Mes'ûd Beyler'dir. Mahdûmları Alâ'eddîn Ali Şâh ile Hayreddîn Halîl Bey'i Eretna Bey'in nezdine göndermişdi.

Eretna Bey'in bunlara telkîn etdiği fikrin gâyesi, zâhirde Sultân Mes'ûd'un şehzâdesi Sultân Altunbaş'ın ecdâdından mevrûs olan Amasya tahtına iclâsı idi. Hakîkat-i hâlde Ya'kûb Şâh'ı ber-taraf edib Amasya vilâyetini elde etmekdi. Ya'kûb Şâh pek şecî' ve müdebbir bir zât idi. Eretna Bey, bunun nüfûzundan pek ziyâde çekiniyordu.

Emîr Bahâ'eddîn Kürt Bey⁴⁶⁵ Sultân Altunbaş'ın dâmâdı ve hâmî-i yegânesi idi. 719 senesinde Selçûk şehzâdeleri katliâm edildiği esnâda Sultân Altunbaş'ı çiftliğinde ihfâ ederek katlden kurtaran Kürt Bey'di. Emîr Timurtaş'ın Sivas'dan Mısır'a firârında [19] Sultân Ebû Sa'îd'in afvına mazhar olan Sultân Altunbaş, Taşan Bey'in idâresinde bulunan Simre çiftliğinde münzeviyâne yaşıyordu.

Kürt Bey, Sultân Ebû Sa'îd Bahâdır Hân'ın ümerâ ve süferâsından Amasyalı Sunkur oğlu Şihâbeddîn Ahmed Bey⁴⁶⁶ sâyesinde tahsîl-i emâret ederek Sultân Ebû Sa'îd'in manzûru olmuşdu. Oğulları Kutlu Şâh, Togan Şâh, Kazan Şâh pek meşhûr idi. Bunlar Sultân Altunbaş'ın kerîmezâdeleriydi.

Büyük Şeyh Hasan Bey, Timurtaş oğlu Küçük Hasan Bey'in harbinde münhezim olduğu münâsebetle Horasân beylerinin yanında nüfûz ve i'tibârı kalmamışdı. Bu yüzden Horasân beyleri Moğol hükümdârı Muhammed Hân'ı tanımadılar. Cengiz'in birâderi Cüci Aksar bin Baysuka Bahâdır evlâdından Toga Timur Hân bin Sutay bin Baba Bahâdır Ebûkâr bin Tur bin Cüci Aksar'ı 737 senesi şa'bânında hükümdâr yapdılar.

Küçük Şeyh Hasan Bey, bu vak'adan bi'l-istifâde yanına aldığı bir kuvvetle Tebrîz üzerine yürüdü. Büyük Şeyh Hasan Bey'i harben kaçırdı. Sultân Muhammed Hân'ı i'dâm ederek yerine ceddi Emîr Çoban'ın menkûhası olan Sati Bey Sultân binti Sultân Muhammed Olcaytu Hân'ı 738 senesi zilhiccesinin yirmisinde tahta iclâs etdi.

Lâkin Sati Hân'ın saltanatı şerî'at-ı islâmiyyeye muhâlifdi. Bu yüzden [20] Irâk ve Diyârbekir beyleri Sati Bey'i tanımadılar. Aralarında Hülâgu hânedânından Cihân Timur Hân bin Alakonuk bin Geyhatu Hân bin Abaka Hân bin Hülâgu Hân'ı 739 senesi saferinde sultân yapdılar.

Küçük Hasan Bey, Sati Bey'in saltanatı kendisini halkın nazarından düşüreceğini anladı. Kendisi de Sati Bey'i hal' edib yerine Hülâgu hânedânından Sultân Süleyman Hân bin Muhammed Hugay bin Sengî yâhud Cumûdâr bin Yeşmût bin Hülâgu Hân'ı 739 senesi rebî'ülevvelinde Tebrîz tahtına iclâs etdi.

"Nüzhetü'l-Kulûb"da yazıldığı üzere "739'da ümerâ-i Çobâniyân ve Âzerbaycân ve Gürcistân, Süleyman Hân nebîre-i Hugay nevâde-i Hülâgu Hân'ı ve ümerâ-yı Dîyârbekir ve Bağdâd, Cihân Timur Hân püser-i Alakonuk bin Geyhatu Hân'ı ve ümerâ-yı Horasân ve Rûm dahi Toga Timur Hân bin Cüci Kasâr'ı Moğol tahtına iclâs ederek fırka fırka olmuşlardır.

Müverrih-i fâzıl Ahmed Tevfîk Beyefendi'nin bana lutfen verdiği bir gümüş akçenin bir yüzünde "es-Sultânu'l-Melikü'l-Kâmil Toga Timur sene tis'in ve selâsîne ve seb'i-mi'e" diğer yüzünde "duribe bi-Amasya" yazılıydı. Bundan anlaşılır ki Eretna Bey'in nüfûzu Anadolu beylerini Büyük ve Küçük Hasan Beyler'in nüfûzundan uzaklaşdırmak için Horasân sultânı olan Toga Timur Hân'a bey'at etdirmişdir.

Bundan dolayı Eretna Bey kendi mevki'ini tahkîm için Mısır hükümdârı Melik Nâsır Muhammed bin Kalavun dergâhına Babazâde Nûreddîn Kutlu Bey'i sefîr gönderdi. Ağır hediyeler takdîm etdi. "Kitâbü's-Sülûk"da mufassalan yazıldığı üzere melik-i müşârün-ileyhe arz-ı mutâva'at, Melik Nâsır nâmına hutbe kırâ'at, sikke darb edeceğine söz verdi. Himâyesini taleb etdi. Hükûmet-i Mısriyye tarafından matlûbu is'âf edilerek "nâib-i bilâdu'r-Rûm" unvânı verildi.

Diğer tarafdan Amasya beylerini Ya'kûb Şâh aleyhine çevirmeye teşebbüs ederek Simre Çiftliği'nde kendi hâlinde oturan Sultân Altunbaş bin Mes'ûd-ı Selçûkî'yi pek ziyâde iltizâm ediyor, Sultân Altunbaş'ı Amasya tahtına iclâs etmeye çalışan Kürt ve Taşan Beyler'i himâye ve teşcî' etmekden geri durmuyordu.

Hacı Ya'kûb Şah, bu iki emîrin harekât ve teşebbüsâtından şübhe etdiği cihetle ta'kîbâta kıyâm ederek bunları Sivas'a kaçırdı. Bundan dolayı Emîr [22] Timurtaş oğlu Şeyh Hasan Bey'e olan irtibâtını tahkîm ederek mevki'ini ve Amasya emâretini Eretna Bey'in istîlâ ve tecâvüzâtından korumak istedi.

739 senesi evâsıtında Küçük Hasan Bey, Ya'kûb Şâh'ı Tebrîz'e da'vet ederek Sultân Süleyman Hân nüfûzunu Anadolu beylerine kabûl etdirmeye çalışıyordu. Emîr Ya'kûb Şâh, büyük mahdûmu olan Emîr Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Bey'i kendi yerine kâ'im-makâm nasb ederek Tebrîz'e gitmişdi.

Emîr Süleyman Bey, pederinin emâretini kabûl eden Türkmen beylerinin nüfûzuna istinâd ederek Amasya vilâyetini pederi nâmına idâre ediyordu. Bunu haber alan Kürt ve Taşan Beyler Sivas'dan avdet ederek Amasya havâlîsinde olan Türkmen beyleriyle ittifâk ve Sultân Altunbaş'ı iclâs etmeye ahd ü mîsâk etdiler. Pervâne Beyzâde Emîr Alameddîn Süleyman Bey olanca kuvvetiyle bu mîsâkı tervîc ediyordu.

Çünkü Sultân Altunbaş, Emîr Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Pervâne Bey'in kerîmezâdesi idi. Pervâne Beyzâde Alameddîn Süleyman Bey de Sinop emîri idi. Kastamonu emîri Cândar oğlu Hüsâmeddîn Süleyman Paşa ansızın Sinop'a hücûm edib Süleyman Bey'i Amasya'ya kaçırmış, Ya'kûb Şâh'a sığındırmışdı.

Süleyman Bey, Sinop'u kurtarmak için Yakûb Şâh'dan istimdâd etdiği hâlde Ya'kûb Şâh birtakım mevâ'îd ile imdâdını ta'vîk ederek Süleyman Bey'i kızdırmışdı. Hacı Ya'kûb Şâh, Amasya'dan tebâ'üd eder etmez Eretna Bey'e mürâca'at ve muktezâ-yı karâbet Sultân Altunbaş'ın tarafdârlarına muzâharet etmişdi.

[23] Kürt Bey'i iltizâm eden Amasya beyleri içinde Sunkur Oğulları el-Hâc Kemâleddîn İsmâ'il ve Şücâ'eddîn Süleyman Beyler'le mümtâz beylerden Gül Bey oğlu İzzeddîn Muhammed Bey vardı.

In Modern English

He was the son of Nâsıreddîn Muhammed Bey bin Mübârizeddîn Mûsâ Bey, of the line of Seyfeddîn Torumtay, beylerbeyi of Amasya, and was a native of Amasya. Through the fame he gained from the defeat of Büyük Şeyh Hasan, ruler of Iraq, he became emir of Amasya in early 737 [1336-37]. The influence and fortune of the Azeris came to an end. Küçük Şeyh Hasan Bey took the place of Büyük Şeyh Hasan Bey in Anatolia.

Büyük Şemseddîn Muhammed Nahcıvânî, treasurer of Amasya, went into hiding; in his place Gümüşlüzâde Emîr Celâleddîn Abdullah Çelebi became müstevfi. Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Bey, son of Ya'kûb Şâh, became candâr, and Musliheddîn Kutlu Bey muhtesib. The judge and deputy remained in their places. Mevlânâ Rükneddîn Ahmed Sinôbî became sadru'l-ulemâ and mufti of the city.

At this time the stars of three persons shone on the political stage: Ya'kûb Şâh, Eretna and Ulu Beys. For this reason Muhammed bin Alî el-Acemî, in his work called "Mecma'u'l-Ensâb", opened a section under the heading "The Circumstances of the Children of Emîr Eretna, Emîr Torumtay and Sebüktay" and related the relations and states of Eretna Bey and the sons of Torumtay and Sebüktay.

The one the author calls "Emîr Eretna" is the famed Reşîdeddîn Eretna Bey, great emir of Sivas. The ones he calls "the children of Emîr Torumtay" are Ya'kûb Şâh, son of Torumtay, commander of Emîr Şeyh Hasan-ı Sagîr and governor of Amasya, and his children.

The ones he calls "the children of Sebüktay" are Mühezzebeddîn Ulu Bey, son of Sebüktay, emir of Tokat and favorite of Şeyh Hasan-ı Sagîr, and his children.

But Eretna Bey was a very intelligent man who understood politics. By various means he drew to his side Kutlu, İlyâs and Mes'ûd Beys, the sons of Baba İlyâs Horasânî among the emirs of Amasya, and Kürt and Taşan Beys among the Turkmen beys, and wished to break Ya'kûb Şâh's influence.

Nûreddîn Kutlu Bey was the son of Emîr Celâleddîn Fîrûz Bey, son of the famed vizier Şemseddîn Mahmûd Tuğrâ'î bin Baba İlyâs. His brothers were İlyâs and Mes'ûd Beys. He had sent his sons Alâeddîn Ali Şâh and Hayreddîn Halîl Bey to Eretna Bey.

The aim of the idea Eretna Bey instilled in them was, in appearance, to seat Sultan Altunbaş, prince of Sultan Mes'ûd, on the throne of Amasya left by his ancestors. In reality it was to remove Ya'kûb Şâh and seize the province of Amasya. Ya'kûb Şâh was a very brave and prudent man. Eretna Bey greatly feared his influence.

Emîr Bahâeddîn Kürt Bey was Sultan Altunbaş's son-in-law and sole protector. It was Kürt Bey who, when the Seljuk princes were killed in 719 [1319-20], saved Sultan Altunbaş from death by hiding him on his farm. Pardoned by Sultan Ebû Sa'îd on Emîr Timurtaş's flight from Sivas to Egypt, Sultan Altunbaş lived quietly at the Simre Farm, which was under Taşan Bey's administration.

Kürt Bey, having obtained an emirate thanks to Şihâbeddîn Ahmed Bey, son of Sunkur of Amasya, one of the emirs and envoys of Sultan Ebû Sa'îd Bahâdır Khan, had become a favorite of Sultan Ebû Sa'îd. His sons Kutlu Şâh, Togan Şâh and Kazan Şâh were very famed. They were the sons of Sultan Altunbaş's daughter.

Since Büyük Şeyh Hasan Bey was defeated in the war he fought with Timurtaş's son Küçük Hasan Bey, his influence and standing with the beys of Khorasan were gone. For this reason the Khorasan beys did not recognize the Mongol ruler Muhammed Khan. They made ruler, in Sha'ban 737 [1336-37], Toga Timur Khan bin Sutay bin Baba Bahâdır Ebûkâr bin Tur bin Cüci Aksar, of the line of Cüci Aksar, brother of Genghis.

Küçük Şeyh Hasan Bey, taking advantage of this event, marched on Tabriz with the force he had taken with him. He put Büyük Şeyh Hasan Bey to flight in battle. Executing Sultan Muhammed Khan, he seated in his place on the twentieth of Dhu'l-Hijja 738 [1337-38] Sati Bey Sultan, daughter of Sultan Muhammed Olcaytu Khan, the lawful wife of Emîr Çoban, Küçük Hasan's grandfather.

But Sati Khan's sultanate was contrary to the Islamic shari'a. For this reason the beys of Iraq and Diyarbekir did not recognize Sati Bey. Among themselves they made sultan, in Safar 739 [1338-39], Cihân Timur Khan bin Alakonuk bin Geyhatu Khan bin Abaka Khan bin Hülâgû Khan, of the Hülâgû dynasty.

Küçük Hasan Bey understood that Sati Bey's sultanate would make him fall in the eyes of the people. He too deposed Sati Bey and in Rabî' al-awwal 739 [1338-39] seated on the throne of Tabriz Sultan Süleyman Khan bin Muhammed Hugay bin Sengî or Cumûdâr bin Yeşmût bin Hülâgû Khan, of the Hülâgû dynasty.

As written in "Nüzhetü'l-Kulûb": "In 739 the emirs of the Chobanids, of Azerbaijan and of Georgia seated Süleyman Khan, grandson of the grandson of Hülâgû Khan, grandson of Hugay; the emirs of Diyarbekir and Baghdad seated Cihân Timur Khan, son of Alakonuk, grandson of Geyhatu Khan; and the emirs of Khorasan and Rûm seated Toga Timur Khan, of the line of Cüci Kasar, on the Mongol throne, and so divided into groups."

On one face of a silver akçe that the historian and scholar Ahmed Tevfîk Bey kindly gave me was written "es-Sultânü'l-Melikü'l-Kâmil Toga Timur, the year seven hundred and thirty-nine" [739], and on the other face "Struck at Amasya". It is understood from this that Eretna Bey's influence had the Anatolian beys swear allegiance to Toga Timur Khan, sultan of Khorasan, in order to distance them from the influence of Büyük and Küçük Hasan Beys.

For Eretna Bey, who already feared the attacks of Hacı Togay, governor of Diyarbekir, and of Emîr Şeyh Hasan-ı Kebîr, governor of Iraq, was also very anxious about the steadily growing influence and fortune of Emîr Timurtaş's son Küçük Şeyh Hasan Bey, and suspected the bold actions of the emir of Amasya Hacı Ya'kûb Şâh, Hasan Bey's helper and trusted man. Above all he did not trust at all Zeyneddîn Karaca Bey bin Alî Bey, son of Dulkadir and bey of Elbistan, right beside him.

Karaca Bey was bey of the Bozok Turkmens and his influence and power were important. Since he was attached to the Egyptian ruler Melik Nâsır Muhammed bin Kalavun and had been made emir by him, he was in a position suited to seizing Sivas and plundering its surroundings with the help of the Egyptian government.

For this reason, to strengthen his own position, Eretna Bey sent Babazâde Nûreddîn Kutlu Bey as envoy to the court of the Egyptian ruler Melik Nâsır Muhammed bin Kalavun. He presented heavy gifts. As written in detail in "Kitâbü's-Sülûk", he declared his obedience to the said melik and promised to have the khutba read and coins struck in Melik Nâsır's name. He asked for his protection. His request was fulfilled by the Egyptian government, and he was given the title "deputy of the lands of Rûm" (nâib-i bilâdu'r-Rûm).

On the other hand, trying to turn the beys of Amasya against Ya'kûb Şâh, he greatly favored Sultan Altunbaş, son of the Seljuk Sultan Mes'ûd, who lived quietly at the Simre Farm, and did not refrain from protecting and encouraging Kürt and Taşan Beys, who were trying to seat Sultan Altunbaş on the throne of Amasya.

Hacı Ya'kûb Şâh, suspicious of the actions and initiatives of these two emirs, went after them and made them flee to Sivas. For this reason he wished to strengthen his tie with Emîr Timurtaş's son Şeyh Hasan Bey and to protect his position and the emirate of Amasya against Eretna Bey's attempts to seize them.

In mid-739 [1338-39] Küçük Hasan Bey summoned Ya'kûb Şâh to Tabriz and tried to have the influence of Sultan Süleyman Khan accepted by the Anatolian beys. Emîr Ya'kûb Şâh had gone to Tabriz after appointing his eldest son Emîr Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Bey as kaymakam in his place.

Emîr Süleyman Bey, relying on the influence of the Turkmen beys who accepted his father's emirate, administered the province of Amasya in his father's name. Learning of this, Kürt and Taşan Beys returned from Sivas, formed an alliance with the Turkmen beys around Amasya and swore an oath to seat Sultan Altunbaş on the throne. Pervâne Beyzâde Emîr Alameddîn Süleyman Bey spread this agreement with all his strength.

For Sultan Altunbaş was the son of the daughter of Emîr Mu'îneddîn Süleyman Pervâne Bey. Pervâne Beyzâde Alameddîn Süleyman Bey was also emir of Sinop. Hüsâmeddîn Süleyman Pasha, son of Cândar and emir of Kastamonu, had suddenly attacked Sinop, made Süleyman Bey flee to Amasya and sheltered him with Ya'kûb Şâh.

Although Süleyman Bey asked Ya'kûb Şâh for help to save Sinop, Ya'kûb Şâh delayed his help with some words and angered Süleyman Bey. As soon as Hacı Ya'kûb Şâh went away from Amasya, he applied to Eretna Bey and, as kinship required, supported Sultan Altunbaş's partisans.

Among the beys of Amasya who sided with Kürt Bey were el-Hâc Kemâleddîn İsmâ'il and Şücâeddîn Süleyman Beys of the Sunkur Oğulları, and, among the distinguished beys, İzzeddîn Muhammed Bey, son of Gül Bey. It was with their help that Kürt and Taşan Beys lifted Sultan Altunbaş from his farm and brought him to Amasya with respect and honor. They seated him on the throne and tried to revive the dead Seljuk sultanate.

The Question of Toga Timur, Sati Bey and Süleyman Khan

The chain of khans in the middle of the text is the list of puppets who competed for the Ilkhanid throne after Ebû Sa'îd's death. According to the sources Hasan Kûçek in the summer of 1338 enthroned Satıbey Hatun, Çoban's widow and Ebû Sa'îd's sister. The candidate of the Khorasan emirs is Toga Timur, and although Hasan Büzürg in the winter of 1339 asked him to advance from Khorasan, he later gave this up. When the Jalayirids enthroned Cihan Timur, Hasan Kûçek found Süleyman Khan, and in the sources this is placed in May 1339. Hüsameddin, however, places Süleyman Khan's accession in Rabî' al-awwal 739, that is, the autumn of 1338. The difference is a few months; which is correct could not be determined in this study. Hasan Kûçek defeated the Jalayirids on 26 June 1340 in the Zerrinrud valley near Maragha. The event Hüsameddin in the next entry places at "the end of Dhu'l-Hijja 740", Küçük Hasan's victory, seems to coincide with this clash, since Dhu'l-Hijja 740 corresponds to June 1340.

Eretna, Egypt and the Khutba

Eretna's allegiance to the Mamluks is related in the text on the basis of "Kitâbü's-Sülûk". According to an academic study, Eretna in 738 [1337-38] became a vassal of the Mamluks, had the khutba read and coins struck in their name, and in 740 [1339-40] gave up this commitment. Learning of this, the Mamluk sultan Nâsır Muhammed gave orders to the governor of Aleppo and had raids carried out as far as Sivas, Eretna's center. Eretna thereupon sent his envoy to Cairo with valuable gifts and announced that he would fulfill his commitments. This account draws a frame consistent with the Derende event Hüsameddin relates in the next entry. The same study reports that in 742 and 743 Eretna also had coins struck in the name of the last Ilkhanid sultans in Samsun, Tokat and other cities. The information that the Toga Timur akçe in Hüsameddin's hands was struck at Amasya could not be verified in this study; the place and date of the akçe in the text rest only on the author's report.

For Eretna's identity the sources say: he was a commander of Uighur origin, had served under Timurtaş, the Ilkhanid governor of Anatolia, and had established kinship with Timurtaş. When Timurtaş went to Egypt he rose against the Mongols. Hüsameddin's judgment in the text, "Eretna Bey was a very intelligent man who understood politics", should be read in this context.

The Beys of Amasya Taking Sides

This entry relates the clash of two poles in Amasya. On one side are Ya'kûb Şâh and his son Süleyman Bey, attached to Küçük Hasan; on the other, Kürt and Taşan Beys, supported by Eretna. In the middle stands Altunbaş, of Seljuk descent. Hüsameddin's many details on the kinship relations of the beys of Amasya, that is, who was whose son-in-law, grandson or brother, rest largely on his own records. No detailed information on these persons was found in other sources. It is only written in a study that Hacı Şadgeldi, emir of Amasya in the later period, was counted a relative of the Seljuks because his paternal grandmother was a daughter of Sultan Altunbaş.

Information in the Footnotes

The footnotes help in reading the text. The explanation that the name Kürt is of Turkish origin and means "beech tree" is among the examples of the criticism of excessive etymology directed at Hüsameddin and is not regarded as verified in itself. The record of the Egyptian embassy quoted from Maqrizi reports that el-Hâc Ahmed, son of Sunkur, went as envoy to Cairo on behalf of Ebû Sa'îd in Rabî' al-awwal 732 [1331-32]. This record is the basis of Hüsameddin's account of Ahmed Bey's embassy and emirate career.

Note for the Reader

In this entry Hijri dates are very dense and in which month an event took place matters. There may be differences between the dates Hüsameddin gives and those in the sources; the reason for them is that in most places Hüsameddin does not show the source he relies on. It is therefore hard to give a firm order for events of close dates.
