Original Text (Ottoman Turkish)

Sultân Altunbaş'ın dâmâdı Emîr Bahâ'eddîn Kürt Bey'in oğludur. Tuli Bey'in vefâtından sonra Kayseriyye emâretinden Amasya'ya gelip emîr olmuşdu. Buna Müneccimbaşı Efendi "Câmiu'd-Düvel"inde "el-Hâc Kutlu Şâh bin Kürt" ve "Kutlu Şâh el-Kürdî" diyor. Neslen Kürd yâhud Moğol olduğunu yazıyor.

Kutlu Şâh'ın mu'âsırı olan müverrih-i fâzıl Salâheddîn es-Safedî "A'yânu'l-Asr" adlı eserinde bunu Moğol ümerâsından "Nûreddîn Kutlu Şâh el-Vaşâkî" diye zabt ediyor. Buşaklu aşîretinden bir Türk olduğunu gösteriyor. Çünkü "vaşak" dilimizde "buşak" demekdir.⁴⁸²

Hacı Kutlu Şâh, hangi târîhde Amasya emîri olduğu anlaşılamadı. Çünkü Tuli Sultân'ın târîh-i vefâtı ma'lûm olamadı.⁴⁸³ [39] Ancak Kutlu Şâh'ın Amasya'da Meydân Köprü başında Ahi Sâbıkeddîn Mahallesi'nin önünde ırmağa nâzır bir mevki'de köşe başında binâ eylediği câmi-i şerîf, emîr-i müşârün-ileyhin Amasya'da emâretini ve târîhini göstermekdedir.

Kuyûd-ı atîka ve Amasya sicillâtında "Mescid-i şerîf-i Musliheddîn Kutlu" ve ba'zen "Câmi-i şerîf-i el-Hâc Nûreddîn Kutlu Şâh" diye muhtelif sûretlerle görülmekdedir. Bugün vîrân bir hâlde isbât-ı vücûd eden bu câmi-i şerîfin 748 senesinden i'tibâren varlığı müsbetdir.

Bundan bir derece anlaşılır ki "Hacı Kutlu Şâh" her hâlde 747 senesinde Amasya emîri olmuşdur. Hacı Kutlu Şâh'ın Amasya'da i'timâd etdiği iki sîmâ pek meşhûr idi. Biri Yağmur Beyzâde Emîr Sâbıkeddîn Ebûbekir, diğeri sadru'l-ulemâ Mevlânâ Sa'deddîn Muhammed bin İsmâ'il er-Rûmikî. Bunlara "Ahi Sâbıkeddîn" ve "Ahi Sa'deddîn" denirdi.

Emîr Sâbıkeddîn Ebû Bekir Bey, Amasya'da iç kalenin meydâna nâzır olan kapısı hâricinde Hacı Kutlu Şâh Câmi-i şerîfi'nin civârında, Mevlânâ Sa'deddîn Muhammed Rûmikî de kale kapısının iç tarafında ikâmet ederlerdi. Bunların oturdukları yerlere bugün Ahi Sâbıkeddîn Mahallesi, Ahi Sa'deddîn Mahallesi denmekdedir. Sâbıkeddîn Ebû Bekr'in birâderi Emîr Sârımeddîn İbrâhim Bey, Hacı Kutlu Şâh'ın asdikâsından idi.

Hacı Kutlu Şâh'ın zamânında Amasya kâdı'l-kudâtı Mevlânâ Nûreddîn Osmân bin Ya'kûb ez-Ziyârî, defterdârı Babazâdeler'den Hâce Fahreddîn Muhammed bin Abdullah el-Cevherî idi. Hâce Fahreddîn Muhammed Çelebi, Eretna Hân'ın [40] vezîri olan Kutlu Beyzâde Hâce Alâ'eddîn Alî Şâh'ın ammizâdesiydi. Sâbık Amasya kâdı'l-kudâtı İmâdeddîn Ömer bin el-Hallâtî de Eretna Hân'ın kazaskeri olmuşdu.

Hacı Kutlu Şâh'ın birâderi Şerefeddîn Toganşâh, Turhal beyi idi. Babukşâh oğlu İmâdeddîn Esen Bey, Hacı Kutlu Şâh'ın mu'temedlerindendi. Bu esnâda Mevlânâ Fahreddîn İlyâs bin Cemâleddîn Aksarâyî, Musliheddîn Mûsâ bin Mahmûd Sivasî, Bahâ'eddîn Muhammed bin Hasan Kübrevî, Şerefeddîn Muhammed bin Vecîheddîn Ömer Erzincânî büyük müderrislerdendi.

Hacı Kutlu Şâh, neslen Türk idi. Pederi Moğol saltanatında ihrâz-ı emâret etmiş olan "Kürt"⁴⁸⁴ idi. Gâyet müdebbir, şecî', Türklüğü kendisine şeref bilmiş bir kahramândı. Sultân Eretna Bey'in gözdesi, Amasyalılar'ın medâr-ı iftihârı idi. Vezîr Amasyalı Hâce Ali Şâh ile kazasker Amasyalı İmâdeddîn Ömer'in i'timâdlarını kazanmışdı.

Hacı Kutlu Şâh'ın zamânında Kastamonu emîri İbrâhim Bey 748'de vefâtıyla yerini Süleyman Paşazâde Âdil Bey tutdu. Ankara beyi Devletşâh oğlu Melik Nâsıreddîn Bahtiyâr Bey'di. Konya hükümdârı, Karaman oğlu Melik Bedreddîn Mahmûd bin Emîr Şemseddîn Muhammed Bey'in vefâtıyla oğulları Yahşî Hân, Fahreddîn Karaman, Şemseddîn Muhammed sırasıyla emîr oldukdan sonra Hayreddîn Halîl Bey bin Mahmûd idi. Lârende şehrinde ikâmet ederdi. [41]

Elbistân emîri Dulkadir oğlu meşhûr Zeyneddîn Karaca Bey bin Alî Bey'di. Bozok Türkmenler'i bunu tanırdı. Elbistân'da ikâmet, Mısır hükümdârına itâ'at ederdi. Divriği beyi şehrî Çağrı oğlu Muhammed Bey ba'zen Eretna Hân'a ba'zen de Karaca Bey'e mütemâyil bir sûretde beylik eylerdi. Mahdûmu İbrâhim Bey'di.

Ancak Eretna evlâdıyla Karaman Oğulları arasında musâheret olduğundan yek-diğerine karşı hâtır-nüvâzâne münâsebete devâm ederlerdi. Karaman oğlu Halîl Bey bin Mahmûd'un vefâtıyla takrîben 751 senesinde büyük mahdûmu Şücâ'eddîn Süleyman Bey Konya bilâdına hükümdâr oldu. Kendisi Lârende şehrinde ikâmet edib birâderi Dâvud Bey'i Konya'ya vâlî gönderdi.

Eretna Hân, Erzincân'da emâret eden Emîr Zahîreddîn Tayerten Bey'in kerîmesini, birâderi Burak Bey'e almış, 749 senesinde Burak Bey'i Erzincân'a emîr ta'yîn etmişdi. Burak Bey de müdebbir, şecî' bir zât idi. Eretna Hân, memâlikinin şark hudûdunu pek güzel muhâfaza ediyordu.

Mısır hükûmeti tarafından Haleb vâlîsi meşhûr Emîr Seyfeddîn Beyboğa el-Kâsımî⁴⁸⁵ 752 senesi recebinde Mısır hükümdârı Melik Nâsır Hasan bin Muhammed bin Kalavun'un hal'ıyla birâderi Melik Salâheddîn Sâlih'in Mısır tahtına iclâsından pek müte'essir olmuşdu. Bu yüzden Türkmen beylerini ve hâssaten Eblestîn (Elbistân) beyi Dulkadir oğlu Emîr Zeyneddîn Karaca, Hama beyi Ahmed es-Sâkî, [42] Trablusşâm beyi Beklemiş, Safed beyi Altanboğa (Altun Boğa) Beyler'i dâ'ire-i ittifâkına alıp kıyâma hâzırlanıyordu.

Eretna Hân, tâm bu esnâda 753 senesi evâ'il-i muharreminde vefât etdi.486 Eretna Hân'ın vefâtı herkesi, her tarafı müte'essir etmişdi. Çünkü emsâli nâdir bulunur bir zât idi. Hattâ Mısır ve Haleb müverrihleri bile izhâr-ı te'essür ederek mersiyeler yazmışlardı. Müverrih-i meşhûr Salâhuddîn Safedî, "A'yânu'l-Asr"ında müşârün-ileyhin târîh-i vefâtını ve tercemesini yazıp şu mersiyeyi de ilâve ediyor:

بمملكة الروم حل الردى/ ألجل النوين الذي قد فقدنا
فتبا لصرف الليالي التي/ أرتنا أرتنا كما ال أردنا⁴⁸⁷

Sonra diyor: "Eretna Noyin, pek iyi bir adamdı. Mütedeyyin, zâhiren ve bâtınen ehl-i İslâma pek mâ'ildi. Ne eğri, ne hâ'in değildi. Ehl-i ilmi pek severdi. Ulemâyı meclisine toplar, onların mübâhesâtını dinlemekle zevk-yâb olurdu. Hâtunu da bu meclis arkasında ulemânın münâkaşât-ı ilmiyyesini dinler, bunlardan büyük bir haz duyardı. Ehl-i İslâm, Eretna Noyin'den iyilikden başka bir şey görmemişlerdi".

Eretna Hân, hakîkaten vefâtına acınacak ümerâdan idi. Gâyet âdil, fukarâ-perver, müşfik, dîndâr, merhameti gâlibdi. Halkın kendisine "Köse Peygamber" dedikleri kadar vardı. Tekellüfât ve ihtişâmât-ı emîrâneden ictinâb eder, herkesle bilâ-tekellüf görüşür, halkın bütün şikâyetlerini kendisi dinlerdi. [43]

Bundan dolayı her tarafdan, hâssaten Tebrîz hükümdârı Çoban oğlu Eşref Hân'ın zulmüyle vîrân olan memâlikinden ulemâ, ümerâ akın akın gelir, Eretna Hân'ın memâlikine ilticâ ederdi.

Eretna Hân'ın nüfûzu, Karamânîler'i tecâvüzden men' eder, kendisine tâbi' olan beylere haşyet verirdi.

Tuli Bey, sultân gibi yaşar, kimseye boyun eğmez bir adam iken Eretna Hân'a itâ'at etmişdi.

Câzibe-i hüsn ü cemâli her göreni kendisine teshîr ederdi.

Vezîr Alâ'eddîn Alî Şâh, Muhammed Bey'i iltizâm ediyor, Eretna Hân'ın tahtına çıkarmak istiyordu. Muhammed Bey emîr olursa Ali Şâh müstakilâne vezâret ve tedvîr-i umûr-ı memleket edecekdi. Bununla beraber Hâce Alî Şâh, Muhammed Bey'in hüsnüne meftûn idi. Hâlbuki kazasker İmâdeddîn Ömer Çelebi, Hâce Ali Şâh'ın bu hareketini beğenmiyor, Ca'fer Bey'in [44] hakkını teslîm ediyordu.

"Câmiu'd-Düvel"de mezkûr olduğu üzere Hâce Alî Şâh, bütün muhâlefetlere rağmen Ca'fer Bey'i habs ederek Nâsıreddîn Muhammed Bey'i taht-ı emârete iclâs etdi. Çünkü kendisini halka göstermek ve sevdirmek istiyordu. Bu sûretle Melik Nâsıreddîn Muhammed Bey Eretna hânedânında ikinci hükümdâr tanındı.

Lâkin bu iki emîrzâdenin amcaları olan Erzincân emîri Burak Bey, birâderi Eretna Hân'ın yerine kendisinin daha müstahak olduğunu iddi'â ederek iclâs edileceğini ümîd ediyordu. Bu yüzden Muhammed Bey'in cülûsunu haber aldıkda pek münfa'il oldu. Derhâl kıyâm etdi. Ca'fer Bey'i iltizâm eden ba'zı ümerâ da Muhammed Bey'in cülûsuna i'tirâz etmişlerdi. Bundan dolayı Burak Bey'in kıyâmıyla merkez-i emâret olan Sivas şehri dûçâr-ı tehdîd olmuşdu.

Vezîr Hâce Alâ'eddîn Alî Şâh, bu mahzûra binâ'en merkez-i emâreti Kayseriyye'ye nakle mecbûr oldu. Muhammed Bey'i alıp Kayseriyye'ye gitdi. Sivas'ı müdâfa'a etmeye muktedir olan Amasya vâlîsi Hacı Kutlu Şâh'ı zamîmeten Sivas vâlîliğine nasb etdi. Hacı Kutlu Şâh, Amasya emâretine mahdûmu Şihâbeddîn Ahmed Şâh'ı nasb ederek Sivas'a gitdi.

In Modern English

He was the son of Emîr Bahâeddîn Kürt Bey, son-in-law of Sultân Altunbaş. After Tuli Bey's death he came from the emirate of Kayseri to Amasya and became emir. Müneccimbaşı Efendi, in his "Câmiu'd-Düvel", calls him "el-Hâc Kutlu Şâh bin Kürt" and "Kutlu Şâh el-Kürdî". He writes that he was Kurdish or Mongol by lineage.

The learned historian Salâheddîn es-Safedî, a contemporary of Kutlu Şâh, in his work "A'yânu'l-Asr" records him as "Nûreddîn Kutlu Şâh el-Vaşâkî" among the Mongol emirs. This shows that he was a Turk of the Buşaklu tribe. For "vaşak" in our language means "buşak".

On what date Hacı Kutlu Şâh became emir of Amasya could not be understood. For the death date of Tuli Sultân could not be known. But the mosque Kutlu Şâh had built in Amasya at the head of the Meydan Bridge, in front of the Ahi Sâbıkeddîn quarter, at a corner overlooking the river, shows the said emir's emirate in Amasya and its date.

In old records and the registers of Amasya it is seen in various forms as "Mescid-i şerîf-i Musliheddîn Kutlu" and sometimes "Câmi-i şerîf-i el-Hâc Nûreddîn Kutlu Şâh". It is certain that this mosque, which survives today in ruins, has existed since 748 [1347-48].

From this it is understood to some degree that "Hacı Kutlu Şâh" in any case became emir of Amasya in 747 [1346-47]. Two figures Hacı Kutlu Şâh trusted in Amasya were very famous. One was Yağmur Beyzâde Emîr Sâbıkeddîn Ebûbekir, the other the head of the scholars Mevlânâ Sa'deddîn Muhammed bin İsmâ'il er-Rûmikî. They were called "Ahi Sâbıkeddîn" and "Ahi Sa'deddîn".

Emîr Sâbıkeddîn Ebû Bekir Bey lived in Amasya outside the gate of the inner castle facing the square, around the Hacı Kutlu Şâh Mosque. Mevlânâ Sa'deddîn Muhammed Rûmikî lived inside the castle gate. The places where they lived are today called the Ahi Sâbıkeddîn quarter and the Ahi Sa'deddîn quarter. Sâbıkeddîn Ebû Bekir's brother Emîr Sârımeddîn İbrâhim Bey was one of Hacı Kutlu Şâh's close friends.

In Hacı Kutlu Şâh's time the chief judge of Amasya was Mevlânâ Nûreddîn Osmân bin Ya'kûb ez-Ziyârî, and its treasurer was Hâce Fahreddîn Muhammed bin Abdullah el-Cevherî of the Babazâdes. Hâce Fahreddîn Muhammed Çelebi was a cousin of Kutlu Beyzâde Hâce Alâeddîn Alî Şâh, vizier of Eretna Khan. The former chief judge of Amasya, İmâdeddîn Ömer bin el-Hallâtî, had also become Eretna Khan's kazasker.

Hacı Kutlu Şâh's brother Şerefeddîn Toganşâh was bey of Turhal. İmâdeddîn Esen Bey, son of Babukşâh, was among Hacı Kutlu Şâh's trusted men. At this time Mevlânâ Fahreddîn İlyâs bin Cemâleddîn Aksarâyî, Musliheddîn Mûsâ bin Mahmûd Sivasî, Bahâeddîn Muhammed bin Hasan Kübrevî and Şerefeddîn Muhammed bin Vecîheddîn Ömer Erzincânî were among the great professors.

Hacı Kutlu Şâh was a Turk by lineage. His father was "Kürt", who had obtained an emirate in the Mongol sultanate. He was a very prudent, brave hero who regarded Turkishness as an honor for himself. He was the favorite of Sultân Eretna Bey and a source of pride for the people of Amasya. He had won the trust of the vizier Hâce Ali Şâh of Amasya and of the kazasker İmâdeddîn Ömer of Amasya.

In Hacı Kutlu Şâh's time, when İbrâhim Bey, emir of Kastamonu, died in 748 [1347-48], Süleyman Paşazâde Âdil Bey took his place. The bey of Ankara was Melik Nâsıreddîn Bahtiyâr Bey, son of Devletşâh. The ruler of Konya: after the death of Melik Bedreddîn Mahmûd bin Emîr Şemseddîn Muhammed Bey, son of Karaman, his sons Yahşî Khan, Fahreddîn Karaman and Şemseddîn Muhammed became emir in turn, and then Hayreddîn Halîl Bey bin Mahmûd was ruler. He lived in the city of Lârende.

The emir of Elbistan was the famed Zeyneddîn Karaca Bey bin Alî Bey, son of Dulkadir. The Bozok Turkmens acknowledged him. He lived in Elbistan and obeyed the Egyptian ruler. The bey of Divriği, the well-known Muhammed Bey, son of Çağrı, ruled as bey now close to Eretna Khan, now close to Karaca Bey. His son was İbrâhim Bey.

But since there was kinship by marriage between the line of Eretna and the Karaman Oğulları, they kept up a conciliatory relationship toward each other. With the death of Karaman's son Halîl Bey bin Mahmûd, around 751 [1350-51] his eldest son Şücâeddîn Süleyman Bey became ruler of the Konya country. He lived in the city of Lârende and sent his brother Dâvud Bey to Konya as governor.

Eretna Khan had taken the daughter of Emîr Zahîreddîn Tayerten Bey, who ruled as emir in Erzincan, for his brother Burak Bey, and in 749 [1348-49] had appointed Burak Bey emir of Erzincan. Burak Bey too was a prudent, brave man. Eretna Khan guarded the eastern frontier of his country very well.

The famed Emîr Seyfeddîn Beyboğa el-Kâsımî, governor of Aleppo by the Egyptian government, in Rajab 752 [1351] was greatly affected by the deposition of the Egyptian ruler Melik Nâsır Hasan bin Muhammed bin Kalavun and the placing of his brother Melik Salâheddîn Sâlih on the throne of Egypt. For this reason he was preparing to rise up, taking into his circle of alliance the Turkmen beys, and especially Emîr Zeyneddîn Karaca, son of Dulkadir and bey of Elbistan, Ahmed es-Sâkî, bey of Hama, Beklemiş, bey of Tripoli of Syria, and Altanboğa (Altun Boğa), bey of Safed.

Eretna Khan died just at this time, at the beginning of Muharram 753 [1352]. Eretna Khan's death grieved everyone, everywhere. For he was a person of whom few like are found. Even Egyptian and Aleppan historians expressed their grief and wrote elegies. The famed historian Salâhuddîn Safedî, in his "A'yânu'l-Asr", writes the death date and biography of the said person and also adds the following elegy:

Death has settled on the land of Rûm, on account of the Noyin we have lost.
May the order of those nights be no more, which showed us Eretna in a way we never wished.

Then he says: "Eretna Noyin was a very good man. He was devout, and inwardly and outwardly much inclined to the people of Islam. He was neither crooked nor treacherous. He loved the people of learning very much. He gathered scholars in his assembly and took pleasure in listening to their debates. His lady too, behind this assembly, listened to the scholars' learned debates and took great delight in them. The people of Islam had seen nothing from Eretna Noyin but good."

Eretna Khan was truly one of the emirs whose death was to be pitied. He was very just, caring for the poor, compassionate, devout, one in whom mercy outweighed. He was so much so that the people came to call him "Köse Peygamber". He avoided show and the affectation peculiar to emirs, met everyone without ceremony and himself listened to all the people's complaints.

For this reason scholars and emirs flocked from everywhere, especially from the lands ruined by the tyranny of Eşref Khan, son of Çoban and ruler of Tabriz, and took refuge in Eretna Khan's country. Eretna Khan showed respect to those who came and gave them zeamet and lands. He repaired the hearts and places that the Mongol and Tatar beys had destroyed and strove for the people's welfare and happiness.

Eretna Khan's influence kept the Karamanoğulları from attack and gave caution to the beys attached to him. The present provinces of Amasya, Tokat, Canik, Çorum, Sivas, Kayseri and Erzincan, together with their dependent places, were among the lands under Eretna Khan's rule and influence.

It is noteworthy that during Eretna Khan's lifetime no one among his beys is known in history to have rebelled against him. Even Ulu Bey, emir of Tokat, who defied him most, would submit. Tuli Bey, although a man who lived like a sultan and submitted to no one, had obeyed Eretna Khan.

For this reason Eretna Khan's death was truly a catastrophe. For Eretna Khan had two sons: the elder Ca'fer, the younger Muhammed Beys. Muhammed Bey, though very young, was very handsome. The charm of his beauty attached everyone who saw him to himself.

The vizier Alâeddîn Alî Şâh supported Muhammed Bey and wished to place him on Eretna Khan's throne. If Muhammed Bey became emir, Ali Şâh would serve as vizier independently and conduct the affairs of the country. Besides this, Hâce Alî Şâh was infatuated with Muhammed Bey's beauty. Yet the kazasker İmâdeddîn Ömer Çelebi did not approve of Hâce Ali Şâh's conduct and recognized Ca'fer Bey's right.

As recorded in "Câmiu'd-Düvel", Hâce Alî Şâh, despite all the opposition, imprisoned Ca'fer Bey and seated Nâsıreddîn Muhammed Bey on the throne of the emirate. For he wished to show himself to the people and be loved. In this way Melik Nâsıreddîn Muhammed Bey was recognized as the second ruler of the Eretna dynasty.

But Burak Bey, emir of Erzincan, uncle of these two emirzades, claiming that he had more right than anyone in place of his brother Eretna Khan, was hoping to be seated on the throne. For this reason, hearing that Muhammed Bey had come to the throne, he was greatly enraged. He rose up at once. Some emirs who supported Ca'fer Bey had also objected to Muhammed Bey's accession. Because of this, with Burak Bey's rising, the city of Sivas, the center of the emirate, was left under threat.

The vizier Hâce Alâeddîn Alî Şâh, because of this drawback, was forced to move the center of the emirate to Kayseri. He took Muhammed Bey and went to Kayseri. He also appointed Hacı Kutlu Şâh, governor of Amasya, who was strong enough to defend Sivas, to the governorship of Sivas. Hacı Kutlu Şâh went to Sivas after appointing his son Şihâbeddîn Ahmed Şâh to the emirate of Amasya.

Views on Kutlu Şâh's Lineage

The question Hüsameddin takes up is Hacı Kutlu Şâh's identity. Müneccimbaşı regards him as "Kürt" or Mongol, Safedî records him as "Vaşakî". Hüsameddin, however, takes the word "Kürt" as the father's name and maintains that he was a Turk by lineage. In his footnote he writes that Müneccimbaşı may have taken him for a Kurd on the basis of this word. Some contemporary writings that rely on Hüsameddin's book, however, regard the family as of Kurdish origin and call this dynasty in Amasya the "Kurdish Emirate". With the sources at hand it is not possible to give a firm judgment on this debate. Apart from the names Hüsameddin uses, we found no record documenting the family ties.

The Continuation of the Dynasty

One of Kutlu Şâh's sons is Hacı Şadgeldi, called "Şadgeldi Pasha" in the history of Amasya. According to the sources, Şadgeldi, Kutlu Şâh's second son, became emir of Amasya in 1359. Thereupon his elder brother Şihâbeddîn Ahmed Şâh was sent to govern Sivas. With the weakening of the Eretna line Şadgeldi acted independently and was removed in 1381 by Kadı Burhâneddin.

The Kutlu Şâh Mosque and the Meydan Bridge Area

Hüsameddin shows the place of the mosque as "the head of the Meydan Bridge". This bridge is today also known as the İstasyon Bridge and corresponds to the front of the Meydan Gate of Amasya Castle. It is written that the first form of the bridge was built in 1145 by the Seljuk Sultan Mesud I and that, after it was destroyed in an earthquake, it was rebuilt in the 1370s by Şadgeldi Pasha with the same structural character. The governorate record gives the destructive earthquake as 1374. The last major repairs were made in 1828 and 1940.

For the place Hüsameddin calls "today" the Ahi Sâbıkeddîn quarter, a later study has the expression "at the head of the Meydan Bridge, the old Sabıkuddin, the new Kurşunlu quarter". In the same study the Ahi Sadeddin quarter is mentioned within the Hatuniye quarter around the Meydan Gate. That is, the quarters bearing the names of the two Ahis that Hüsameddin mentions appear in old records, and their names later changed. No information on the present state of the Kutlu Şâh Mosque was found in the sources we read; Hüsameddin too describes it as being in ruins.

Kutlu Şâh's name has also been used to date other events of the same period. It is written in another study that the Halveti sheikh Abdurrahman Celaleddin Erzincanî came to Amasya "in the time of Emir Nureddin Kutlu Şah" and died in 775 (1373-74).

Eretna's Death and His Heirs

Eretna's death is given in the encyclopedia entry as Muharram 753, that is, March 1352; this is the same as Hüsameddin's date. The entry writes that the ruler was devout, just, learned and fond of doing good, and that the people called him "köse peygamber" because of his sparse beard and his justice. Safedî's "A'yânu'l-Asr" is among the sources the encyclopedia entry cites for Eretna; the elegy and praise Hüsameddin relays rest on this source.

The throne quarrel also largely coincides with the account in the encyclopedia entry. According to the entry, Mehmed Bey was declared ruler by the emirs; because of his young age and inadequacy he lost his influence and in 1354 left the throne and took refuge with the Karamanoğulları. Cafer Bey was brought out in his place. Hüsameddin, however, puts forward Hâce Ali Şâh's role in the change of hands of the throne. On Burak Bey's emirate of Erzincan a different name is seen in one source: in the list of Erzincan emirs attached to the Eretnids, Ahi Ayna is written for 1348-1362, and Burak Bey is not mentioned. This difference could not be resolved.

Neighboring Principalities

Karaca Bey, emir of Elbistan, is the founder of the Dulkadiroğulları and is seen as a Turkmen bey attached to the Mamluk sultans in Egypt. According to the encyclopedia entry the Mamluks at times used Karaca Bey's Turkmens to keep Eretna occupied. We could not compare the list of Karaman emirs that Hüsameddin gives with another source. According to the encyclopedia entry Eretna also seized Konya in 1350, after the death of Karamanoğlu Ahmed Bey.
