In Modern English

As can be understood from all this, Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn rendered many services in the fields of history and literature besides Amasya Tarihi, which he prepared by giving twenty-five years of his life.

The author was retired by age limit from the Kuyûd-ı Vakfiye Administration in 1935, at the age of 65. However, it is understood from the letter he wrote to Atatürk in 1936 that he suffered serious economic hardship in this period. In this letter he stated that two violent fires, in Amasya and in Istanbul, had burned all his possessions, and that the 41.75 liras granted him on retirement by age limit was not enough to support his family with six children, and asked for help. A few years after the letter the author died on 10 February 1939, at the age of 70, in the house at number 93 Samanyolu Street in Şişli, Istanbul. His funeral was taken from his house on Sunday 12 February at 11:00, and after the noon prayer, following the funeral prayer at the Feriköy Mosque, he was buried in the Feriköy Cemetery. In the death notice it was mistakenly written that he "committed suicide." Although in his letter he had said that he had six children, in the death notice only four of his children were named.

Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • yaş haddi: the age limit for retirement
  • yavuz: violent, destructive
  • mukavele: contract
  • müteakib: afterwards
  • zikredilmek: to be mentioned

Date and Age of Death

The encyclopedia entry also reports that the author died on 10 February 1939 in his house in Şişli and was buried in the Feriköy Cemetery. If his birth in November 1869 is taken as the basis, his age at death is 69; the 70 in the introduction and the age of 65 in 1935 resemble a calculation made with a difference of a year. Since the date of birth appears in the sources with small differences, this inconsistency should not be exaggerated.

The Fires and Financial Hardship

The letter written to Atatürk is an important document illuminating the story of the writing of Amasya Tarihi. The "two fires" mentioned in this letter bring to mind the Taş Musluk fire of 1331 (1912-1913) described in the previous entry and a fire in Istanbul; however, the introduction does not state explicitly which fires are meant. For this reason no definite information can be given on the identity of the fires.

The Death Notice

The introduction specifically notes that the statement "committed suicide" in the death notice is wrong. The newspaper in which the notice was published is Cumhuriyet and the date is 12 February 1939. No information on how the author died could be found in any other source.
