Türklerin bu dönemdeki rolleri ve bunda Amasya’nın etkisini şu sözleriyle ifade etmiştir: “Fakat feyz-i irfâniyle yetişdirdiği erleri sâyesinde o hasârat ve zâyiâtını büyük gayretlerle telâfî ederek kendisini gayr-ı Türkler’in idâre-i cebbârânesinden kurtardı. Gayr-ı Türkler’in açtıkları yaralarını Türk elleriyle sardı. Amasya, bu devre-i şu’ûrunda kendisinin yetişdirdiği paşalar, beyler, kadılar, müftüler, alaybeyleri, ağalar ellerinde güzel bir idâre gördü. Bağrında açtığı irfan müesseselerinde, kahraman ocaklarında besleyip büyüttüğü şanlı erler, inkırâza doğru sürüklenen Osmânlı İmparatorluğu’nu değil, deli ve kızıl cahil padişahların delice ve çocukça hareketlerinden istifadeye kalkışan vatansızların ihtirâsât-ı iblisânesi yüzünden pek korkunç bir uçuruma doğru giden Türk varlığını başında tutup kurtardıktan başka, Türklüğün en yüksek bir çağı olan Devr-i Kânûnî’deki ikbâline erdirdi. Şirâze-i intizâmı bozulan yeniçerileri demir pençesiyle inzibat altına alan, zorbalığa hitâm veren Köse Mehmed Ağa gibi bir yeniçeri ağasını Türklüğü ölüm yatağından kaldırıp göklere kadar çıkaran Köprülü Mehmed Paşa gibi bir sadrâzamı Amasya yetişdirdi.
Köprülü Mehmed Paşa, Arnavut Belgradı kazâsına tâbî “Ruznik” adlı köyden devşirilmiş bir kuloğlu olduğu halde Amasya’nın Köprü kasabasında, Türk muhitinde doğdu. Türk anasının sütüyle beslendi. Türk kafasıyla büyüdü. Amasyalıların himmetleri sâyesinde yükseldi. Türklüğü korkunç uçurumdan kurtaran bir hârika-i fıtrat oldu.
Gayr-ı Türkler’in zamanlarındaki rezâletler görülmedi.
Amasya, yetişdirdiği fâtih pâdişâhları, vezîr-i a'zamları, vezîrleri, kadı-askerleri, beylerbeyileri, nişâncıları, monlâları, vâlîleri, fâzılları, kâmilleri, âlimleri, üstâdları, hattâtları bütün Türkiye târîhinin medâr-ı iftihârıdır.”⁴⁸ şeklinde ifade etmiştir.
In Modern English
Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn is an important figure who served the language, culture and history of the Turkish nation and especially Turkish nationalism. As in all his works, it is possible to see the traces of this in Amasya Tarihi. His effort to prove with evidence the history of Turkish rule in Anatolia, the Turkish tribes found in Amasya, and that the names of tribes and many other names are Turkish is one of the concrete indications of this. The following statement in Amasya Tarihi is an indication of how detailed was the author's thinking and research when the subject was Turkish, Turkishness and Amasya: "As is understood from the poets' tezkires written until now, the first to sing a poem (ezgi) in pure Turkish in the land of Anatolia, in the Turkish country, is 'Babazâde Âşık Paşa' of Amasya." In the introductory part of the second volume too he related in detail from various sources the characteristics of the Turkish nation, and tried to draw attention to its aspects that are different from and superior to other nations, and especially its services to the religion of Islam. He even examined some names of prophets linguistically and put forward that these might be prophets who came from the Turks.
It is seen that he bore a similar sensitivity about events of the Ottoman period centuries later. He stated that from the beginning of the 17th century, the pressure and oppression shown in Amasya under Ottoman rule by non-Turkish elements caused great material and spiritual harm, and assessed the movements against them as national revolutions. He expressed the role of the Turks in this period, and Amasya's influence in it, in these words: "But Amasya, through the men raised by the abundance of its learning, made up that damage and those losses with great effort and freed itself from the tyrannical rule of the non-Turks. It bound up with Turkish hands the wounds that the non-Turks had opened. In this period of awakening Amasya saw good government in the hands of the pashas, beys, kadıs, muftis, alaybeyis and ağas it had raised. The glorious men whom it nourished and brought up in the institutions of learning it had opened in its bosom, in its hearths of heroism, not only kept at their head and saved not the Ottoman Empire, which was being dragged toward collapse, but the Turkish existence, which was heading toward a terrible abyss because of the satanic ambitions of the stateless who tried to take advantage of the mad and childish actions of mad, red and ignorant sultans, but also brought it to the rise it had in the time of Kanuni, the highest age of Turkishness. Amasya raised an Janissary ağa like Köse Mehmed Ağa, who brought the disordered Janissaries under discipline with an iron claw and put an end to tyranny, and a grand vizier like Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, who raised Turkishness from its deathbed up to the heavens.
Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, although a slave-child levied from a village called 'Ruznik' in the district of Albanian Belgrade, was born in the town of Köprü in Amasya, in a Turkish milieu. He was nourished with the milk of a Turkish mother. He grew up with a Turkish mind. He rose thanks to the zeal of the people of Amasya. He was a person of extraordinary character who saved Turkishness from the terrible abyss.
Those who follow events well in the history of Türkiye know that from the grand vizierate of Frenk İbrâhîm Pasha in 929 [1522-23] until the year 1020 [1611-12], the Turks, deprived of the grand vizierate, even of the vizierate, of the beylerbeyliks of Rumelia and Anatolia, and of the supreme command, had all the branches of administration taken into the monopoly of the non-Turks.
The Turks raised the banner of revolution and rebellion against this monopoly in Zilhicce of 1007 [1599]. With their blood they broke this monopoly and brought Turks to the vizierate, the grand vizierate and the supreme command. After this they attained equality with the non-Turks.
It is noteworthy that from the grand vizierate of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha on, the office of grand vizier mostly fell to the Anatolian Turks. The disgraces of the time of the non-Turks were not seen. For Köprülü Pasha had somehow thrown the non-Turks out of the Enderun School and put Anatolian Turks in their places."
From the author's statements about Köprülü Mehmed Pasha it can be seen that his nationalism rested on a cultural nationalism more than a racist one.
The author, who thought that his thoughts such as those above would at times be seen as exaggerated and criticized, gave the answer in his own writings. In his articles published in the İkdam newspaper, which set out in particular to serve Turkish nationalism, under headings such as "Türk hakanları," "Boğdı Han," "Azerbaycan ve Azerbaycan tarihi," "Türklerde 'Han' unvanı," "Bakü'de Ermeniler," "Tarihimiz" and "Tarih-i Osmaniye hizmet," and in the Vakit newspaper under headings such as "Millî Tarih Hakkında," he wrote and expressed his ideas on the writing of history, Turkish history, nationalism and national history. The author stated that the intellectuals of civilized nations create the cultural existence, history, language, geography, spiritual and intellectual needs and social needs of the nations to which they belong by finding and researching them. In this regard, however, he voiced a reproach, putting forward that they wrote libraries full of works on these subjects and were not accused or blamed of nationalism for this work, while among us people working toward the same aim were blamed as "Turkists." Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn, stating that Turkism is not a fault to be blamed, and taking civilized nations as an example, said that the aim of those who work on this path is to prove with all the works they possess the Turks' worthiness on the road of civilization, and to make known and teach to the Turks their own history, language, country and saints (erenler). Especially because of his sensitivity on Turkish nationalism, he emphasized that making the Turks know their own history and teaching them their own existence is, in the conditions in which they find themselves, a national necessity for the Turks, whose experience of civilization is inferior to no nation, who are among the highest nations in Asia by their political and military merit, who have lived their national life heroically for centuries and carried their political existence to the world. But he stated that the necessary funds should be set aside for the scholars who will realize this necessity, that the scholars who will do this work should be free of worries about their livelihood, and that only in this way could the documents in the Ottoman archives be examined and the insufficient or erroneous Ottoman histories be corrected. Noting that the Tarih-i Osmanî Encümeni is a body founded as a national service to guide the research and collection of archival documents, he said that a division of tasks carried out with the participation of every branch of science and every body would make the work easier in the work of this Encümen. Emphasizing the importance of national sensitivity, economic well-being and the division of labour in historical research, Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn stated that Turkish history should be written from the earliest times, and criticized the works of Ottoman history that begin with Süleyman Şah's arrival in Anatolia and present Osman Bey as the first sultan of the Turks. According to him, dividing national history into before and after Islam is also not scientific. At the same time, drawing attention to the great importance of researching social and cultural history subjects, he foresees that the Turkish nation's influence on world civilization should be followed step by step, that it should never be a history of war but a history of culture (hars), and that a national history that will give spirit to new generations should be built.
Writing Amasya Tarihi within the framework of these feelings, the author tried to write his work for years with sacrifices and without taking help from anyone. His love both of the nation and of Amasya outweighed all these hardships. In many places of Amasya Tarihi it is also possible to see the traces of the love he felt for his homeland Amasya. In the ninth volume of the work, on the couplets that Hızrî Mehmed Bey (Hızır Paşazâde) wrote about Amasya in his treatise Âb-ı Hayat, he expressed his feelings in these words: "Ah Amasya! It is to you and to your honor that I owe this: the exalted, generous and appreciative leading men who, over the centuries, raised you with all your institutions of science, your art, your charitable works and waqfs, your religious and civil institutions, and who made this appreciative poet, who worked for years for your sake devotedly and without receiving help from anyone, one who prays for your inhabitants, that is, your people."
The author, Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn, who guessed that he would again be criticized at times for his excessive love of Amasya, answered these criticisms in the following way when giving information on Hacı Şadgeldi Padişah, one of the rulers of Amasya: "It is not the Historian of Amasya who invented this independent emirate, its rulers, its beys and their children for the honor of Amasya and of being from Amasya. The only service of the Historian of Amasya is to find and bring to light, only with a spark of zeal, without receiving the slightest protection or help from any side, and especially by spending all his possessions on this cause, a government and independent emirate that ruled gloriously in Amasya and whose name and fame were later forgotten, and those who founded it and those who lived in it."
In another place he expressed his feelings about Amasya thus: "Amasya, by rising through national unity to the highest peak of fortune, had seen the highest prosperity and civilization, had been the homeland of the greatest conquerors and the most glorious heroes, and had attained the highest learning and happiness both in knowledge and in economy. Amasya, with its high madrasas, its excellent müderrises, its learned poets, its skilled physicians, its masters who knew their craft, its master calligraphers, had become a magnificent home of learning, a glorious university, a great centre of civilization. Amasya, with the conquering sultans, grand viziers, viziers, kadıaskers, beylerbeyis, nişancıs, mollas, governors, excellent men, mature people, scholars, masters and calligraphers that it raised, is a source of pride for the whole history of Türkiye."
The Ode to Amasya in the first volume is also the most important reflection of the love he felt for the city.

On Köprülü Mehmed Pasha
The person Hüsameddin stresses most is Köprülü Mehmed Pasha. According to the encyclopedia entry, Mehmed Pasha was born in the village of Rudnik (Ruznik) in the sanjak of Berat, was levied by devshirme and brought to Istanbul, and was raised in the Enderun. He went to the town of Köprü (Vezirköprü) in Amasya and married Ayşe Hanım, and because he stayed here he became known as "Köprülü." That is, his tie to the town of Köprü comes not from birth but from later settling. Hüsameddin's sentence "he was born in the town of Köprü, in a Turkish milieu" does not agree with this information. That Köprülü served as sanjak governor of Amasya is also recorded in the encyclopedia; Hüsameddin's interpretation that he rose through the "zeal" of Amasya is the author's own assessment.
Köprülü was appointed grand vizier on 15 September 1656, and before taking office put forward certain conditions: that every report (telhis) he submitted be carried out, that there be no interference in appointments, that his powers not be limited, and that no importance be given to the words of those who did not like him. Sultan Mehmed IV and the Valide Turhan Sultan accepted these conditions with an oath. We could not find in the section of the encyclopedia entry that we read a statement confirming Hüsameddin's claim that "he threw the non-Turks out of the Enderun and put Anatolian Turks in their places"; for this reason the claim should be read as the author's interpretation. Likewise the statements on the rebellion of 1007 and on the "monopoly" dates between 929 and 1020 could not be verified with another source.
Hüsameddin's Turkism
The author of the introduction says in this section that Hüsameddin's nationalism is not racist but a cultural nationalism. The encyclopedia entry paints a harsher picture: although Hüsameddin received a strong Islamic culture and upbringing, he is a "thoroughgoing Turkist"; this is shown by his presenting the aim of his life as "researching Turkish history and language," his passing very harsh judgments on the devshirme, and his taking part in the "Turkism in language" movement. The emphasis on "non-Turk" in the Köprülü Mehmed Pasha section should also be read in this framework. In the historiography of the time Turkism held an important place both in the debates in the Tarih-i Osmanî Encümeni and in newspaper articles; Hüsameddin's writing in publications such as İkdam and Türk Yurdu shows that he was part of this environment.
Love of Amasya and Criticism
Hüsameddin's answer to the criticism that might be made of him, "he puts Amasya forward too much," appears in the discussion of Hacı Şadgeldi. In his answer he says that he did not "invent" the independent emirate of Amasya, but only brought to light with documents a forgotten state. The author of the introduction makes a finding in the same direction: the author made an extraordinary effort to prove that certain persons were from Amasya. The lines quoted from the ninth volume of the work are a response to Hızır Paşazâde's couplets on Amasya.
