Original Text (Ottoman Turkish)

Hakkı Tarık Us’a “Tarih, gençliğin ilmidir, o insanı ihtiyarlatmaz, insanı öz ve hakikate sönmez bir aşkla bağlar.

Mehmet Süreyya Bey’in Sicill-i Osmanî’si, Bursalı Mehmed Tahir Bey’in Osmanlı Müellifleri de kullanılan diğer biyografi kaynaklarındandır.

Bunları âlem-i târîhe tanıtan; medfenlerini, sülâlesini bulan âcizleri oldu.”

Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn, who said to Hakkı Tarık Us, "History is the science of youth; it does not make a man old, it binds him to the essence and to truth with an unextinguished love. History is the science of humanity and of the nation," also expressed his thoughts on the science of history in the first volume of Amasya Tarihi. According to him, history is a branch of science that enables us to gain knowledge about different societies, to bring out their ideas and to appreciate their works. He stated that if events of various kinds and recurring events are examined, this is an experience for the world. The author thinks that the events occurring in this world are each an example from which to take warning (ibret), and that therefore in these events a wisdom (hikmet) and, in the end, a thousand counsels are hidden. He states that there is a divine power in the occurrence of events in the world, and that everything apart from this is established to end badly. He emphasizes that the wisdom found in the events of history will give a person insight, and that the counsels concerning the events will increase the devotion to religion of every thinking person. The author thinks of the science of history as a science containing many wisdoms. Since history is a science that tells the causes of the development of the peoples of the world and the disasters they suffered, he sees one of the reasons for a people's increasing its happiness and sustaining its greatness as its knowing the science of history properly. He judges that nations that do not look carefully at the events occurring in the world cannot sustain their political life and will gradually perish; to prevent this, he stated that great states attach great importance to the science of history and have composed many works and compiled many valuable books in this field.

In this respect the author regards as very important the history books on the past of important cities such as Bukhara, Baghdad, the Hejaz, Aleppo, Samarkand, Jerusalem, Merv, Egypt and Yemen. According to him, each of these works, by recording reliably the biographies of the jurists, rulers and artists raised in their cities and the important events in that city, is able to tell the whole world the aspects from which a lesson can be drawn. Stating that the expressions in Ebû Bekir el-Hatîb el-Bağdâdî's "Târîh-i Bağdâd" and in Lisâneddîn el-Hatîb et-Tilimsânî's "el-İhâta" support his own views on this subject, he says he is greatly saddened that works of this worth are not yet to be found among us. The Tarih-i Bağdad that the author mentions, completed over more than twenty years, is an alphabetical work giving information on the lives of people who lived in Baghdad before 1058 or in some way came here. The biographies of a total of 7831 persons appear in this work, from statesmen such as caliphs, viziers and commanders, and from poets, kadıs and people of other professions; the work begins with those named Muhammad. Its first volume consists of subjects such as the founding of Baghdad, its history and its conquest by the Muslims. This work was most probably thought of by the author as a model for Amasya Tarihi, because it is seen that the author followed a similar method. Likewise, in another model, the work called "el-İhâta fî ahbâri (târîhi) Gırnâta," Lisâneddin el-Hatîb related information on the history, geography and topography of Granada, and also the biographies of the important people who lived in the city or were connected with it, giving examples from their works. For Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn this work too constitutes a model.

Starting from these examples, it is seen that Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn wrote "Amasya Tarihi" within the discipline of a historian. He used a broad body of source literature in order to give detailed information on the history and culture of the Turks. Many first-hand sources were reached, from the chronicles of the official historians (vakanüvis) to archival documents, from court records to inscriptions. In addition, he examined and criticized many works written in different fields such as general history, biography, geography, dictionaries and the religious sciences, and in different languages such as Arabic and Persian, made comparisons, and reached various conclusions. The care he showed for chronology, one of the important elements of the science of history, is also noteworthy. In the footnotes on the documents he used he gave information on where the documents are found and their names.

The biographies, which make up a large part of Amasya Tarihi, are regarded as one of the oldest types of historical writing, because the role of the human being in history is important. This type of historiography is actually quite a difficult task, because the person's own historical facts must be brought out impartially, without disturbing the flow of history. In Islamic history the biographical writing called "tabakât" has a deep-rooted past. If it is considered that the first independent works in Ottoman historiography began to be produced in the 15th century, it can be said that the Ottomans were late in biographical-style historiography. In fact, in Islamic historiography, by which Ottoman historiography was extensively influenced, great importance was given, especially among scholars, to the writing of tabakât and tercüme-i hâl books. In his work Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn, by using the works of both the Islamic historians and the Ottoman biographical historians who began to develop later, created a source for the life stories of the important figures of Amasya. In particular, Taşköprüzâde's Arabic eş-Şakâyıku'n-Nu'mâniyye, which contains the biographies of the Sufi sheikhs and scholars who lived in the Ottoman Empire from its founding to 1858, and Mecdî Mehmed Efendi's translation of it under the title "Şakâyık Tercümesi," are among the author's most important sources. In addition, Nev'îzâde Atâî's book "Hadâiku'l-hakâyık fî tekmileti'ş-Şakâyık," the most perfect and most famous of the supplements to the Şakâyık, and the other supplements to the Şakâyık were also used as sources. Müstakîmzâde Süleymân Sa'deddîn Efendi's work "Tuhfetü'l-hattâtîn," in which the biographies of many people famous in the art of calligraphy in the Islamic world are given alphabetically, is also among the important biographical sources used. The work "el-Mecmû' fi'l-meşhûd ve'l-mesmû'" by Akif Efendizâde es-Seyyid Abdürrahim Efendi of Amasya, containing the biographies of one thousand one hundred and thirteen scholars, is also an important study the author drew on. Mehmet Süreyya Bey's Sicill-i Osmanî and Bursalı Mehmed Tahir Bey's Osmanlı Müellifleri are other biographical sources used.

The author did not merely use these sources in his work; he particularly took up persons in Amasya whom the biography writers or historians had not seen, and tried to correct the contradictions he found about them in different sources. In this framework he criticized many history books, especially for showing people of Amasya as being from another city. For example, he was able to establish the biography of Zeynelâbidîn Pasha (Darbhânecizâde) from the Amasya registers and from the rulings and appointment (tevcih) registers he found in the Hagia Sophia and Bâb-ı âlî archives. He criticized the absence of this person's biography in the chronicles of Na'îmâ, Vecîhî and Kâtib Çelebî; he noted that he is included only in Na'îmâ's History on the occasion of the beylerbeyliği of Cyprus.

In addition, in his work the author corrected one by one the errors of biographical works and examined the chains of descent and the kinship ties of persons. Dwelling at length on doubtful cases, he presented proof with many works and waqf deeds in order to bring out the most accurate biography. Thus he proved his mastery in biographical historiography too.

In biographical historiography he showed his meticulousness in determining persons' lineage particularly for seyyids and sharifs. Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn is a historian who held great respect for the Âl-i Abâ (the household, ehl-i beyt, of the Prophet) and carefully examined the genealogies of that line, known as "sâdât." His being a good follower of genealogies in particular enabled him to expose the frauds of false seyyids who presented themselves as seyyids or sharifs. The author, who counted descent from Hazrat Ali among the most important honors, paid attention name by name to the ehl-i beyt and the persons descended from it, with his meticulousness on this subject.

For this reason it is possible to say that the author paid attention as far as he could to the things that must be found in biographical works, such as being impartial and realistic, relying on information, documents and witnesses, taking the chronological flow into account, and determining the aspects in which a person differs from his peers, but that at times he made an extraordinary effort to prove that certain persons were from Amasya.

The author, who for this purpose at times also carried out archaeological work, personally identified the graves and gravestones of some important persons. For example, the sons of Ilduk Hatun, daughter of Melik Dânişmend Ahmed Gâzî, Arslan Toğmuş and Uluğ Beys, became famous as the "Kızoğulları"; Uluğ Bey, ancestor of the Kızoğulları, is buried in Ladik, and in Niksar is buried Arslan Toğmuş Bey, also an ancestor of the Kızoğulları. The graves of his son Emîr-i Kebîr Bedreddîn Şâhinşâh were brought to light by Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn when he was kadı in Niksar. The author, drawing particular attention to the importance of his researches on Hacı Şâdgeldi Pasha, noted in the following words that his name, his government and his dynasty were little known in the history of Türkiye, and listed the work he did for this purpose: "Hacı Şâdgeldi Pasha and his father Kutlu Şâh, though in their time they were distinguished historical figures in the middle of Anatolia whose names, deeds and works were very famous, were unfortunately not known by the historians of Türkiye and of the Ottomans. It was this humble person who made them known to the world of history, and who found their graves and their dynasty." In this research he both examined and translated the works found in the libraries in Istanbul, and went about the tombs reading and assessing the inscriptions, and examined the waqf records, and included all this work in his book together with its evidence. He expressed the result of his research thus: "Apart from these, there are historical records and information on Hacı Şâdgeldi Pasha, on his father Hacı Kutlu Şâh, on his grandfather Kürt Bey, on his father Kayı Bey bin Buşak Bey, and on the last children of these that I found, which are the product of my long and very tiring labours. A whole volume would have to be written for these alone. But time and money do not allow it. Such clear evidence proves that Hacı Kutlu Şâh and his son Hacı Şâdgeldi Padişah were high personages who ruled in Amasya independently as emirs and as a government. In Amasya there was an independent emirate and government founded by Hacı Kutlu Şâh. This independent emirate was higher than the emirate of Karaman; greater, stronger, more nationalist and with a more effective word than the emirates of Saruhan, Germiyan and Aydın."

Unfortunately, because of the excavations he carried out in order to bring out gravestones, Abdîzâde Hüseyin Hüsameddîn was at times reported to the security forces as a treasure hunter, and from time to time was left in a difficult position.

The Tradition Where City History and Biography Meet

The two works cited as examples in the text help us to understand how Hüsameddin built Amasya Tarihi. Hatîb el-Bağdâdî's History of Baghdad consists of two parts: the first is a broad introduction describing the conquest of Iraq and Baghdad's founding, geography, mosques, bridges and cemeteries; the second is the biographies of the 7831 persons who lived in Baghdad or came there. The plan of Amasya Tarihi is similar. The first volumes describe the religious and cultural institutions, neighbourhoods, mosques and tombs of the city; from the 6th volume on, the work is devoted to alphabetical biographies of persons raised in Amasya and its surroundings.

There is a small difference between the note "before 1058" in the introduction and the information in the encyclopedia. According to the encyclopedia entry, Hatîb el-Bağdâdî began writing the work in his thirties and completed it twenty years later in 444 (1052-53); that persons who died up to 463 (1070-71) are also included shows that the author made later additions to the work. The introduction does not state what the date 1058 rests on. The same entry reports that the author quoted from the works of about 180 authors, that he devoted the most extensive biography to Ebû Hanîfe, and that the work became a model for the city histories written later.

Lisânüddîn İbnü'l-Hatîb was born in Loja in 1313 and was a statesman and writer who served as vizier at the Nasrid court of Granada. He wrote his work "el-İhâta" between 1359 and 1368 and added his own life story at the end of the book. The work contains the history, geography and topography of the city and the biographies of important persons connected with it; examples from the works of the persons whose biographies are given are also quoted. Because of enmities at court İbnü'l-Hatîb took refuge in Morocco, was arrested there in 1374 and was killed soon afterwards. Hüsameddin's mentioning these two books in particular shows that he wished to tie his own work to this tradition in which city history and biographical book meet.

Hüsameddin's Method and Criticisms

The introduction stresses that the author relied on first-hand sources, above all documents and inscriptions. The encyclopedia entry confirms the same point: Hüsameddin consulted primary sources such as manuscripts, court registers, waqf deeds, inscriptions and gravestones. The same entry also criticizes his mostly not citing the sources he consulted and his resorting in some matters to excessive etymological comparisons; these two points have given rise to hesitation about the scholarly value of the work. On the other hand, Franz Babinger said that on some subjects the work is a real treasure and proposed that it be translated, at least in part, into a Western language. The sentence in the introduction "he specified in the footnotes where the documents are found" and the encyclopedia's assessment "he mostly did not cite his sources" do not fully agree with each other; it would be right for the reader to weigh the two views together. The author of the introduction too notes that Hüsameddin made an extraordinary effort to prove that certain persons were from Amasya.

The Kızoğulları and the Grave Researches

The information on Niksar in the text shows how the author's places of service contributed to his research. According to the encyclopedia entry, Hüsameddin began as nâib of Vezirköprü in March 1903 and was sent to Osmancık in October 1905 and then to Niksar. His finding the graves of the Kızoğulları while kadı in Niksar is a product of this period of service. That he was taken for a treasure hunter because of the excavations shows how the search for gravestones could be interpreted in the eyes of security officials at that time.

The Question of Hacı Şâdgeldi Pasha

The thesis of an independent Amasya emirate that Hüsameddin put forward for Hacı Kutlu Şah and Hacı Şadgeldi is the subject that makes up the longest quotation in the text. The words in the quotation describe not only a claim but also the labour of a piece of research: translating works in the Istanbul libraries, reading tomb inscriptions, searching waqf records. In some sources it is written that Şadgeldi became emir of Amasya in 1359 and remained in office until his death in 1381, and that, while at first subordinate to Eretna Bey, he declared his autonomy after the latter's death. This information coincides in outline with Hüsameddin's thesis. The comparison that Şadgeldi was stronger than the emirates of Karaman, Saruhan, Germiyan and Aydın is the author's own assessment; it could not be verified with an independent source.
