In Modern English

She was a native of Amasya, the daughter of Sunkuroğlu Yahşî Bey, that is, the son of el-Hâc İsâ Bey, and the sister of the grand vizier Bayezid Pasha. In İçerişehir, where she lived with her husband Âsâyiş Beyzâde Hamza Bey, she had an honorable mosque built on the east side of the Yukarı Hamam. She endowed her property to meet the expenses of this mosque. She died before her brother Bayezid Pasha. The children of her sons Sinan and Dâvud Pashas became trustees (mütevelli, administrators) of this waqf in Amasya.

Hatun Pasha and Her Family

In the entry heading the woman is named "Âsiye Hâtun" and "Hâtun Paşa"; the text does not explain why the second is given. Her father Yahşî Bey is also the father of Bayezid Pasha, who served as grand vizier. According to sources giving Bayezid Pasha's biography, Yahşî Bey was among the notables of Amasya and, as Hüsameddin relates, descended from Emîr Seyfeddîn Sungur, a former Seljuk bey. Bayezid Pasha became grand vizier in the reign of Çelebi Mehmed and was executed in the summer of 1421. Her husband Hamza Bey is, according to what Hüsameddin writes in entry 30, the son of Sunkuroğlu Âsâyiş Bey and became son-in-law to his paternal uncle Yahşî Bey; that is, husband and wife are first cousins. The same entry records that Hamza Bey died in 804 [1401-02] in the war with Timur.

The Mosque Today

A study listing the early mosques of Amasya mentions a "Paşa Hatun Mosque" dated 1418. Whether this mosque is the building Hüsameddin speaks of is not clearly stated in the sources at hand; the identification is an inference. Yukarı Hamam is known as the popular name of the Altuntaş Bath, near the Maden Bridge in the Hatuniye Quarter of Amasya. No clear information was found in another source on the location of the mosque that Hüsameddin places "on the east side". Details about Âsiye Hâtun's waqf could not be found outside Hüsameddin's record either.
