In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He is Hasan Bey, one of the zeamet (large military fief) holders; he was the son of Ali Bey Çelebi, son of Aydın Bey. He too was a zeamet holder, and in 841 [1437-38], upon his father's death, he became the owner of the Saz property, famous as "Emîr Hasan Alânî"; later, while he was the alaybeyi of Amasya, he went to the battle of Varna and died as a martyr in 848 [1444-45]. His sons were Ali and Hasan Bey.

Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • züamâ: zeamet holders; cavalrymen (sipahis) whose annual income was assessed high and who joined the war with their own mounted soldiers
  • alaybeyi: the commander at the head of the mounted soldiers (alay) of a sanjak in war
  • şehîden: as a martyr
  • mutasarrıf: the owner of a property

The Battle of Varna and the Sipahis of Amasya

The engagement that Hüsameddin calls the "Varna war" is the pitched battle fought on 10 November 1444 between the Ottoman army and the Crusader army led by the king of Hungary; in the Hijri calendar it falls in 848 and agrees with the date in the text. It is recorded that in the battle prominent figures such as Karaca Bey, the beylerbeyi of Anatolia, and Fenarizâde Hasan Pasha died. In the records we have reached, Hasan Bey's name is not mentioned.

The rise of the provincial sipahi can be followed from the text: his father too was a zeamet holder, he himself takes over the property at his father's death, and then becomes alaybeyi of Amasya. That the same property passed from generation to generation can be seen from the names "Emîr Hasan Alânî" and "Saz property" being mentioned together in Hüsameddin's records (see entries 56, 57 and 60).

No information on Hasan Bey was found in other sources.
