Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • ze'âmet: a military fief with high income
  • hidemât-ı harbiyye: war services
  • mir-livâ: sanjak governor
  • İrân harbi: the Battle of Çaldıran fought with the Safavids

The Battle of Çaldıran and Amasya

The Battle of Çaldıran, in which Ali Bey fell as a martyr, was fought on 23 August 1514 between Sultan Selim the Grim and the Safavid Shah Ismail, and ended in a decisive Ottoman victory. On the Ottoman side the beylerbeyi of Rumeli and about ten sanjak governors died. Whether Ali Bey, whom Hüsameddin calls "mir-livâ," was among the sanjak governors who died could not be determined. Hüsameddin does not say from which source he took this information.

The battle has a special link with Amasya. After the battle Selim spent the winter of 1514 in Amasya and received Shah Ismail's envoys here.

The "Saz property" in the text and the line of his son Habîb Çelebi open the chain that extends to Aydın Pasha in entry 62: among the descendants of Habîb Çelebi is Aydın Pasha, beylerbeyi of Yemen. No information on Ali Bey himself was found in other sources.
