The Shirvan Wars and the Sipahi Corps
The "Shirvan battles" in the text are the Caucasian front of the Ottoman-Safavid war (1578-1590). The war began in 1578 when Lala Mustafa Pasha defeated the Safavid army at Çıldır and entered Tbilisi, and it turned into a long series of campaigns that also included the Shirvan and Dagestan operations. The years in which Aydın Ağa gained fame are set by these wars; 998 [1589-90] falls in the last years of the war.
There is a study on the kapıkulu sipahis settled in Amasya for the first half of the seventeenth century; however, no detail on Aydın Ağa could be read there. His master Goncazâde Hızır Pasha is a person mentioned among the viziers from Amasya. Which unit the expression "the 188th company" indicates could not be determined. No information on Aydın Ağa was found in other sources.
