  • silk: rank, class

Who He Was and His Descent

The text of this entry does not give the person's own name; his identity can be worked out from the name "Emrullah Ağa" in the heading and from the preceding entry. Hacı Osman Ağa is the son of Emrullah Ağa (d. 1099 [1687-88]) of the preceding entry; that entry counts Emrullah and Ali Ağa and Hacı Mehmed Pasha among Hacı Osman Ağa's sons. The person in this entry must be the son Emrullah Ağa. This is an inference; the text does not give the name.

From Çavuş to Head Müteferrika

Müteferrika is the name for select persons of distinguished descent and rank who were given varied duties in the Ottoman palace. The class was divided into salaried (ulûfeli) and timar-holding members; from the late sixteenth century, state officials such as scribes and çavuşes also began to enter the müteferrika posts. The divan çavuşes, for their part, are placed in Mehmed the Conqueror's law code below the timar-holding müteferrikas and on the same level as scribes. The progression in the text can therefore be read as a rise from çavuş to müteferrika and from there to head müteferrika. No detail about the post of head of the müteferrikas was found in the sources read. By which duties he reached these ranks is also not stated; no information on this person's life in Amasya or Istanbul was found in other sources.
