An Emir Family Descended from Baba İlyâs
The genealogy in the entry goes back to Baba İlyâs-ı Horasânî, the leader of the Babaî movement around Amasya. The Babaî uprising had been made against Seljuk rule in the reign of Gıyâseddin Keyhüsrev II (1237-1246). According to a study that relays another entry of Hüsameddin, Emir Muhliseddin Musa Pasha was a son of Baba İlyâs; he served as emir in Kayseri and Konya, fled to Egypt in 703 [1303] and died there, in the city of Kus, in 709 [1309]. His son Oğuzhan Bey (Emir Zâhireddin) returned to Anatolia after his father's death, gained influence in Amasya and in 719 [1319] attached himself to Çobanoğlu Timurtaş Bey. According to the same source, in 744 [1343] he was removed by the Torumtayoğulları on the ground that he had caused the killing of Yakub Şah Torumtayoğlu, the great emir of Amasya; his children were called the "Oğuzhanlılar", and his son was Dündâr Bey.
This account also shows how the chain in the entry ("Dündâr Bey bin Oğuzhan Muhlis Paşa bin Baba İlyâs") is to be read: Oğuzhan is the son of Muhlis Pasha and is a separate person. The translation above chooses this reading because it agrees with that account; Hüsameddin's wording alone can be understood in two ways. The same study also reports that Oğuzhan lived on a large farm west of Mecitözü; Evliyâ Bey's connection with the Mecitözü region fits with this.
The War with Kadı Burhaneddin
The war named in the entry is the clash between Hacı Şadgeldi Pasha, Emir of Amasya, and Kadı Burhaneddin, who was gaining strength in Sivas. Şadgeldi had overcome Kadı Burhaneddin twice before; but after taking the emirate of Sivas, Kadı Burhaneddin planned to remove Şadgeldi, spread propaganda against him and tried to sow discord among his soldiers. In Ramadan 783 [November-December 1381] the two armies met at Tokat. Many beyliks had promised Şadgeldi help, but none sent troops. Şadgeldi was defeated and killed, and he was buried in Amasya in the Halfet Gazi Cemetery; his tomb still stands today. Hüsameddin writes that Evliyâ Bey was killed in this battle; the year of his death agrees with the date of the battle in the sources.
On the Names
"Hacı Kutluşah" and "Hacı Şadgeldi Pasha" in the entry are father and son, emirs of Amasya. That the person called "Hacı Pasha" is Şadgeldi is a possibility drawn from the similarity of the names; the text does not state it. No other record was found about Evliyâ Bey's sons Karaman, Hasan and Yahyâ Bey.
