In Modern English

He was from Amasya, the son of the Kutlu Beyzade Emir Şemseddin Ahmedşah; Ahmedşah was the son of Hâce Alâeddin Alişah, who was the son of Nûreddin Kutlu Bey. In the time of his uncle, the Emir Tâceddin İbrâhim Bey, governor of Sivas, he was the garrison commander of Sivas; when the emir just mentioned was killed, he went to Egypt.

In 786 [1384] he returned and became one of the emirs of Fahreddin Ahmed Pasha Çelebi, Grand Emir of Amasya. In 788 [1386] he declared his allegiance to Sultan Murad Hünkâr and, as one of the Ottoman emirs, spent his life in the wars of Rumelia. His sons were Bâyezîd, Kubat and Hasan Bey. The Kutlu Bey Dynasty and the Emirate of Amasya

The Kutlu Beyzades of the text descend from Hacı Kutlu Şah, who ruled around Amasya, Sivas and Tokat in the fourteenth century. Kutlu Şah became emir of Amasya after Tuli Bey; the exact date is not known, but it is written that he was already emir in 747 [1346]. Besides Amasya, his authority covered Sivas and Tokat and at times reached Kayseri and Konya. Of his sons, he summoned Şehabeddin Ahmed Şah to Sivas and Gazan Şah to Kayseri, and in 760 [1359] he made Şadgeldi emir of Amasya. Kutlu Şah and Ahmed Şah were killed in 762 [1360-61] in the war against the Karamanids.

Şadgeldi Pasha of this family remained at the head of the emirate of Amasya for a long time; in Ramadan 783 [November-December 1381] he lost his battle with Kadı Burhaneddin at Tokat and was killed. After his death his second son Ahmed Pasha became emir of Amasya. The person Hüsameddin calls "Fahreddin Ahmed Pasha Çelebi" may be this Ahmed Pasha, since he was at the head of Amasya in 786; this is an inference, and the sources do not state outright that the two names belong to the same person. The emirate of Amasya began with Kutlu Şah in 747 [1346] and came to an end in 805 [1403] when the emirate of Şadgeldi's grandson ended.

A Difference in the Genealogy

In the sources Şadgeldi's father is named Nûreddin Kutlu Şah, and it is written that Şadgeldi's elder brother Ahmed Şah was killed in 762. Hüsameddin, by contrast, presents Oğuz Bey's father Şemseddin Ahmedşah as the grandson of Nûreddin Kutlu Bey. If this chain is correct, Oğuz Bey is the son of Kutlu Şah's grandson; yet he appears in 786, some twenty-odd years after Kutlu Şah's death, as an adult who had returned from Egypt and taken office. This timing suggests that one or two generations may have been written in excess in the chain. This is a possibility drawn from comparing dates; no record explaining the difference was found in the sources read.

The Journey to Egypt

The entry says that Oğuz Bey went to Egypt when his uncle in Sivas, the Emir Tâceddin İbrâhim Bey, was killed. In the entry of his brother Ulu Bey, Hüsameddin gives the same event as 779 [1377-78] and writes that Ulu Bey fled to Egypt with his father; that the two brothers returned together in 786 after their father's death in Egypt is also mentioned there. It may be inferred from this that Oğuz Bey's journey belongs to the same date, but this is an inference. The circumstances in which Tâceddin İbrâhim Bey was killed, and his killer, could not be found in the sources read.
