In Modern English

He was one of the Kutlu Beyzades of Amasya, the son of Emir Şemseddin Ahmedşah and the brother of Emir Muîneddin Oğuz Bey; Ahmedşah was the son of Hâce Alâaddin Alişah, who was the son of Emir Nûreddin Kutlu Bey. In 779 [1377-78], when his uncle İbrâhim Bey was killed, he fled to Egypt with his father.

When his father died in Egypt, he returned in 786 [1384] together with his brother. In 788 [1386] he declared his allegiance to Sultan Murad Hünkâr, and he was sent to Egypt as envoy by Sultan Bâyezid Yıldırım. In 804 [1401-02] he died in the war with Timur. His descendants too came to be called the Ulubeyliler. His son was Sultânşah Çelebi. The latter's son, one of the great sheikhs, "Bâyezîd Atâ", is buried at Efte.

The War with Timur

The clash that Hüsameddin calls the "Timur war" is most probably the battle fought on the Çubuk plain near Ankara between Timur and the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid Yıldırım. The battle is usually dated 28 July 1402; some sources give 20 July 1402. Because the Hijri year 804 runs from August 1401 to August 1402, the year in the entry agrees with this date. The battle ended in a great victory for Timur, and Bayezid was taken prisoner. The text does not say in what capacity Ulu Bey was in the army or where he died; that the battle was the Battle of Ankara is also an inference.

The End of the Kutlu Beyzades

The emirate of Amasya in the hands of the same lineage began with Kutlu Şah in 747 [1346] and ended in 805 [1403] when the emirate of Şadgeldi's grandson came to an end. Ulu Bey's year of death, 804 [1401-02], falls just before this end. Şadgeldi was killed by Kadı Burhaneddin in 783 [1381], and his second son Ahmed Pasha took his place. It can be understood from two of Hüsameddin's entries that Ulu Bey and his brother Oğuz Bey, as members of branches of this emir family, went to Egypt and entered Ottoman service; no detail was found in the sources read on how the emirate passed to Ottoman rule.

Bâyezîd Atâ and Efte

In a study based on another entry of Hüsameddin, the village of Efte is counted among the villages where descendants of Baba İlyâs mostly lived. No separate record of Bâyezîd Atâ's grave at Efte, or of Sultânşah Çelebi, could be found in the searches made. No information on the lives of his son Sultânşah Çelebi and his grandson Bâyezîd Atâ could be verified outside Hüsameddin.
