The Sinop and Canik Campaigns

Sinop came under Seljuk rule in the time of Keykâvus I (1211-1220), one of the Seljuk rulers who bore the title İzzeddin. The people of Sinop surrendered the city on condition that Alexios I Komnenos, Emperor of Trebizond, who was held prisoner by the Seljuks, be released and that those who wished to leave be permitted to do so; the surrender took place on 26 Cemâziyelâhir 611 [2 November 1214]. The next day a treaty was made between Keykâvus and Alexios, and from then until the defeat at Kösedağ in 1243 the Empire of Trebizond recognised the Seljuks as the superior state.

It may be supposed that the ruler Hüsameddin calls "İzzeddin Keykâvus" was this Keykâvus I and that Oğul Bey took part in the Sinop campaign of 1214; but the entry gives neither the ruler's regnal number nor the date of the conquest. That Oğul Bey took part in these campaigns could not be verified in any source other than Hüsameddin, and the identification above is an inference. The source read does not mention conquests in the Canik region.
