The Devlet Hatun Waqf
In Merzifon, in the İmaret quarter, Devlet Hatun, mother of Çelebi Mehmed, had an imaret built in 822 [1419] together with a mosque and a zawiya; these waqf works are found in the registers of the sixteenth century (Mehmet Öz). Hüsameddin's book has other records on the trustees of the waqf. According to the entry Ahmed Bey-Yûsuf Paşazâde, the trustees descend from Sinâneddîn Yûsuf Pasha, Devlet Hatun's kethüda; from this line Mehmed Bey, while trustee of the waqf, rose to mirliva as Amasya alaybeyi in the Shirvan war, died in 1008 [1599-1600] during the revolt of Karayazıcı Abdülhalîm, and the trusteeship passed to his son Ahmed Bey. According to the entry Ahmed Bey-Şahbâz Paşazâde, Ahmed Bey Şahbâz Paşazâde of Merzifon became trustee of Devlet Hatun on his father's death, became sanjak governor of Amasya in Rebîülâhir 1092 [1681] under the patronage of Kara Mustafa Pasha, and in 1094, after returning wounded from the Vienna war, retired while keeping the trusteeship of the waqf. In another entry the trustee of the waqf in the fifteenth century is named as Yûsuf Paşazâde Mehmed Bey, Devlet Hatun's "valide kethüda", who is written to have died after 867 [1462-63]; thus the trustee records of the waqf reach back to the fifteenth century. Nuh Ağa's trusteeship appears within this chain; from what date he held the post is not written.
Kara Mustafa Pasha's Merzifon
Between 1666 and 1679 Kara Mustafa Pasha had a complex built in Merzifon. According to Mehmet Öz, the parts of the complex made up of the mosque, the Taşhan, the Bedesten, the library, two baths and shops shaped the look of the town, and the waterways attached to its waqfs changed the social and economic life of the town. According to Abdülkadir Özcan, the pasha had a mosque, library, primary school, inn, bath and bedesten built in Merzifon. That Eyyûb Ağa was among the pasha's "ağas" is a reminder that this circle was full of people from Merzifon; the duties and duration of an ağa's service are not written in the text.
From Pasha to Pasha
Kara Mustafa Pasha was executed on 6 Muharrem 1095 [25 December 1683]. After that Eyyûb Ağa attached himself first to Hacı Ali Pasha, then to Amcazâde Hüseyin Pasha. Who Hacı Ali Pasha was is not stated in the entry and could not be verified. Amcazâde Hüseyin Pasha was the son of Hasan Ağa, brother of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha; he took part in the Vienna campaign in Kara Mustafa Pasha's retinue, was imprisoned after the defeat, and at the beginning of 1684 was removed from Istanbul with the beylerbeyilik of Şehrizor. He became grand vizier on 13 September 1697, signed the Treaty of Karlowitz on 26 January 1699, withdrew from office on 4 September 1702 and died on 22 September 1702 (M. Münir Aktepe). This date agrees with the year 1114 that Hüsameddin gives. That Amcazâde had been on campaign in Kara Mustafa Pasha's retinue makes it possible to explain Eyyûb Ağa's passing from one pasha to another by a shared circle; this is an inference and is not said in the text.
The Journey to the Hejaz
The text says that after Amcazâde's death Eyyûb Ağa went to the Hejaz and returned. It is not written that the journey was made for the pilgrimage; but the title "el-Hâc" in the heading suggests that Eyyûb Ağa did perform the pilgrimage. This too is an inference.
