The Köprülüs and the Silahdar Ağası

Köprülü Mehmed Pasha served as grand vizier from 1656 to 1661, and on his death his son Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha succeeded him. Fâzıl Ahmed remained in that office until 1676. The two periods Hüsameddin calls "his grand vizierate" and "his son's grand vizierate" are these years: 1656-1661 and 1661-1676. The silahdarship is a palace office; Kara Mustafa Pasha, the son-in-law of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, also served as silahdar under his father-in-law's grand vizierate. When and in what order Hacı Oruç Ağa held this office is not given in the sources read.

This entry should not be confused with Oruç Bey in the previous entry: the man mentioned there is Oruç Bey, son of Alî, from the village of Marınca in Merzifon, while this entry concerns Hacı Oruç Ağa, son of Abdullah, from Amasya.

The Candia War

The Cretan war lasted from 1645 until the fall of Candia in 1669. Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha crossed to the island in 1666 with a large force; the close siege, which lasted two and a half years, ended with the surrender agreement signed on 6 September 1669 (9 Rebîülâhir 1080). The date 1082 [1671-72] that Hüsameddin gives falls two years after the end of the siege. The sources do not explain this discrepancy; the year may be wrong, or a different engagement may be meant. The information that Hacı Oruç Ağa died in the war could not be found in any source other than Hüsameddin.

The Hacı Oruçoğulları

Hüsameddin lists three generations of the line: Ali, Hasan and Hüseyin Ağa; Hüseyin Ağa's son Gazi Ağa; and, among the grandsons, Hacı Hüseyin Ağa and Hacı Osman Efendi. No other source gave information on the place in Amasya of this family, known as the Hacı Oruçoğulları.
