In Modern English

He is known as "Doğancı" (the Falconer). He had become a beylerbeyi in the Cretan wars. On the first day of the month of Zilkade he became mutasarrıf of Amasya as an arpalık, and Abdülcelîlzâde el-Hâc Hüseyin Ağa, one of the notables, became mütesellim of Amasya.

This year, among the notables, Bayram Efendizâde Abdülaziz Efendi, the well-known calligrapher Abdülcelîl Efendi, Zemânzâde Ali Efendi, müderris of the Yörgüç Pasha Madrasa, and Abdullah Remzî Efendi, son of Hoca Mehmed Efendi, died.

On the first day of the month of Muharrem 1064 [1653-54], Derviş Ali Efendi, the well-known calligrapher of the ta'lîk script, was made nâib (deputy judge) of Amasya by Kadı es-Seyyid Abdülkerîm Efendi. On the tenth of Muharrem Sinan Ağa became serdar of the janissaries, Çavuşzâde Hüseyin Bey alaybeyi, and the sipahi Murâd Ağa kethüdâyeri. In the month of Safer the sanjak of Amasya was given to Mustafa Bey, Bey of Kırşehir.

Doğancı Hasan Pasha and the Arpalık System

In searches made on "Doğancı" Hasan Pasha, the subject of the entry, no information was found in other sources. The only detail Hüsâmeddin gives is that he had risen to the beylerbeyiship in the Cretan wars. As to dating, the following should be noted: the entry is a continuation of the last sentence of the previous entry. There it is said that the sanjak of Amasya was given as has to Hasan Pasha, Beylerbeyi of Anatolia, in Zilkade 1063; the "first of Zilkade" mentioned here also belongs to the year 1063 and falls in the Gregorian calendar at the end of September 1653. It is plausible that the Hasan Pasha called "beylerbeyi of Anatolia" in the previous entry and the Doğancı Hasan Pasha here are the same person; yet two entries later the sanjak is again given to "Hasan Pasha, who was beylerbeyi of Anatolia", and that entry this time introduces Nasûh Ağazâde Kör Hasan Pasha. That there are two different Hasan Pashas referred to with the same title requires care so that these persons are not confused with each other.

The granting of the sanjak as an "arpalık" is a determining practice for the Amasya of the period. The Amasya entry of the Türkiye Maarif Ansiklopedisi writes that between 1568 and 1636 the sanjak was administered by mütesellims, and that after a while it began to be given as an arpalık to persons with the title of pasha. That the mutasarrıfs on these pages often never came to the sanjak and left one of the notables of Amasya in their place as mütesellim is the natural result of this arrangement. The real administrator of the sanjak is on paper a pasha, but in practice a local notable such as Abdülcelîlzâde Hüseyin Ağa.

The Scholar and Calligraphers Who Died

Abdullah Remzî Efendi, among those whom Hüsâmeddin reports as having died in the same year, is also met in the biography volumes of the book. There it is related that Mehmed İlmî Efendi, known as "Küçük Hâce", one of the well-known scholars and poets of Amasya, was the son of Abdullah Remzî Efendi, and that his son Şevkî Mehmed Efendi, having studied with Fâzıl Mehmed Efendi, known as "Uzun Müderris", rose in the judicial profession thanks to his acquaintance in Amasya with Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha. That the family was called "Hâcezâde" agrees with the nisba "Hoca Mehmed Efendizâde" here.

For the calligrapher Abdülcelîl Efendi, the same volumes mention a person called "Abdülcelîl Efendi of the mevâlî", son of Sandûkîzâde Mehmed Efendi of the Sofular quarter and brother of Abdülkerîm Pasha, nicknamed "Yahnikapan". Whether this person is the same as the calligrapher Abdülcelîl Efendi whose death is recorded in this entry is not stated; it is possible that the father of Abdülcelîlzâde el-Hâc Hüseyin Ağa, seen as mütesellim in the following entries, was also this calligrapher, but the source does not say so explicitly.

No information was found in other sources about Derviş Ali Efendi, the ta'lîk calligrapher made nâib of Amasya this year. Although the biography volumes of the book mention a Derviş Ali Efendi, sheikh of the Pir Sinan Lodge in Şehreküstü, who taught calligraphy in Amasya, this man belongs to the previous century and should not be confused with the nâib here.

The Passage to Mustafa Bey

The last sentence of the entry reports the passage of the sanjak to Mustafa Bey, Bey of Kırşehir. Mustafa Bey's identity is the subject of the next entry.
