In Modern English

He had become a mirliva (sanjak governor) because of services he showed in the Cretan wars. The ghazi known as "Çatal Bey" is thought to be this person. On the tenth of the month of Safer 1064 [1653-54] he came as bey of the sanjak of Amasya.

In the month of Cemâziyelevvel, with the dismissal of Kara Abdî Bey, Zambak Mehmed Ağa became city kethüda. In the month of Receb, Sıdkı Mustafa Efendi of Amasya, reîsülküttâb (head of the Divan secretaries), was dismissed; on the first day of Şaban Hayreddînzâde Mustafa Efendi became kadı of Amasya in place of es-Seyyid Abdülkerîm Efendi.

In the month of Zilhicce, when Vizier İbşir Mustafa Pasha, Governor of Aleppo, became grand vizier, his kethüda Salih Ağa of Amasya became sadâret kethüdâsı (steward of the grand vizier), and his secretary Hayreddînzâde Mehmed Efendi became sadâret mektûbcusu (head of the grand vizier's correspondence office). Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, who had been living for two years in Köprü in disgrace, went to meet the grand vizier.

In the month of Muharrem 1065 [1654-55] Serdârzâde Halil Ağa of Amasya became beylerbeyi of Ankara. In the month of Safer, with the dismissal of the nakîb es-Seyyid Mahmûd Ağa, es-Seyyid Halil Çelebi became nakîbü'l-eşrâf kaymakamı (deputy of the nakîb of the Prophet's descendants). In the month of Rebîülâhir Grand Vizier İbşir Pasha, amid great pomp and splendour, was able to enter Istanbul only with difficulty.

Next, Sıdkı Mustafa Efendi of Amasya, who some time before had been dismissed from the reîsülküttâbship, became nişancı (the high official who affixed the sultan's tuğra and directed the Divan's secretarial affairs) with the rank of beylerbeyi of Rumelia. Bağdâdî Mehmed Efendi, known as "Mevkûfâtî", who had been in this office before him, together with his brother and kethüda Bağdatlıoğlu Osmân Ağa, incurred İbşir Pasha's wrath and they were killed. The goods of both were confiscated; only his son-in-law Ali Ağa remained as mütevelli of Mehmed Efendi's waqf.

In the month of Cemâziyelâhir, since Mustafa Bey, Bey of Amasya, was given a beylerbeyiship in return for his earlier services, the sanjak of Amasya was given as has to Hasan Pasha, who was beylerbeyi of Anatolia.

Mustafa Bey and Çatal Bey

Of Mustafa Bey, who gives the entry its name, Hüsâmeddin himself speaks cautiously, saying "he is thought to be the ghazi known as Çatal Bey". In searches made, no information on this person was found in other sources. The bey, who held the sanjak of Amasya for a short time, left it when he rose to a beylerbeyiship.

İbşir Mustafa Pasha's Grand Vizierate and His Men from Amasya

The events named in the entry are the beginning of İbşir Mustafa Pasha's short and stormy grand vizierate. According to M. Münir Aktepe's entry, the seal of the grand vizierate was sent to İbşir Mustafa Pasha, who was in Aleppo, on 16 Zilhicce 1064 (28 October 1654) when Derviş Mehmed Pasha suffered a stroke. İbşir hesitated for a long time to come to Istanbul and finally arrived at Üsküdar on 18 Rebîülâhir 1065 (25 February 1655). Hüsâmeddin's phrases "he became grand vizier in Zilhicce" and "in Rebîülâhir he was able to enter Istanbul only with difficulty" agree exactly with these dates. The same entry writes that when İbşir came to Istanbul he busied himself with dismissals, appointments and confiscations, and began to have his opponents killed or sent into exile.

What is important from Amasya's point of view is that there were people from Amasya in İbşir's closest circle. That his kethüda Salih Ağa became sadâret kethüdâsı and his secretary Hayreddînzâde Mehmed Efendi mektûbî also explains why the events of 1065, to be related in the next entry, struck Amasya so hard. When İbşir fell, these men would go into hiding and flee to Amasya. According to Hüsâmeddin's footnote, Hayreddînzâde Mehmed Efendi was also known as "Aynîzâde" because his mother was Aynî Hatun, daughter of Mehmed Paşazâde Kurt Mahmud Bey.

Sıdkı Mustafa Efendi

Hüsâmeddin has written separately in the biography volumes of the book the life of Sıdkı Mustafa Efendi of Amasya, who was dismissed from the reîsülküttâbship and became nişancı. According to the information there, he was the son of a family from the Fethiye quarter, of the class of kadıs; he had learned knowledge and fine writing with his uncle Küçük Mehmed Ali Efendi, and then moved into the profession of the pen as divan clerk of Hoca Ahmed Pasha of Amasya. He was reîsülküttâb four times: in 1047 under the grand vizierate of Bayram Pasha, and in 1054, 1058 and 1062. When İbşir Mustafa Pasha came to Istanbul as grand vizier, thanks to his old acquaintance with the latter's kethüda Salih Ağa of Amasya, he became nişancı in Cemâziyelevvel 1065 with the rank of beylerbeyi of Rumelia; when İbşir was killed and Kara Murad Pasha, who followed him, was also dismissed, he resigned. Later he became governor of Temeşvar and received the vizierate, kept his post in the time of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, and died in Muharrem 1073. Hüsâmeddin describes him as a vizier who was a scholar, poet and calligrapher; he also relates from the sharia court registers that he repaired the Fethiye Mosque in the quarter where he was born and built a school beside it.

The Death of Mevkûfâtî Mehmed Efendi

Mevkûfâtî Mehmed Efendi, whom Hüsâmeddin calls "Bağdâdî", is the person known as the author of the translation of the Mülteka that was long taught in Ottoman madrasas. The entry that Müjgân Çakır prepared on this author writes that he was born on the island of Midilli (Lesbos), that he received this epithet because of his post in the defterdarship dealing with the revenues called "mevkûfât", and that he was reîsülküttâb under the grand vizierate of Melek Ahmed Pasha. The same entry notes that when İbşir Pasha became grand vizier he was dismissed together with his patron Melek Ahmed Pasha, was set on the road to be exiled to Cyprus, and on reaching İznik was put to death in 1065 (1655) by a firman that arrived and buried there.

There are notable differences between the two records. Hüsâmeddin calls him "Bağdâdî", while the entry says he was from Midilli. Hüsâmeddin relates Sıdkı Mustafa Efendi's appointment as nişancı together with the death of his "predecessor" Mevkûfâtî; the entry records that Mevkûfâtî's last post was chief accountant and writes that he succeeded Sıdkî Efendi in the reîsülküttâbship. On the place and manner of death, Hüsâmeddin gives no detail. It is evident that his brother and kethüda Bağdatlıoğlu Osmân Ağa is the same person as Bağdatlıoğlu el-Hâc Osmân Ağa, who in the previous entry was mütesellim of Amasya in 1062; thus İbşir's purge struck directly at one of Amasya's recent administrators as well.

Kadı Hayreddînzâde Mustafa Efendi

Hayreddînzâde Mustafa Efendi, who became kadı of Amasya in Şaban 1064, appears in the list of kadıs in Neşe İnak's study introducing the Amasya sharia court registers as having served in the years 1064, 1069, 1075 and 1083. According to the same study, Amasya sharia court register no. 11, covering the years 1064-1065, survives today; this shows that some of the events in this entry can be compared with register records.
