In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He was the son of the vizier Kemâleddîn Ahmed Pasha, the lala of Sultan Bayezid II when the latter was governor of Amasya, who died in 873 [1468-69]; he was the brother of Halîl Bey and Süleyman Bey. He was one of the renowned beys and died after 890 [1485]. Another Kemâl Paşazâde, İbrâhim Bey, was the son of Halîl Bey and a grandson of Kemâleddîn Pasha; he too was one of the great beys and died in Edirne after 915 [1509-10]. His son-in-law, who was also his cousin on the father's side, was the Şeyhülislam Şemseddîn Ahmed Efendi. The latter's son İbrâhim Çelebi also died after 954 [1547]. He was among the judges and scholars.

The Family of Kemal Pasha

This entry commemorates one of the best-known families in Ottoman history. Kemal Pasha became lala to Prince Bayezid in 1465 (870) and received the title "Pasha" on account of this post. His son Süleyman Çelebi was appointed guardian of Amasya in 879 (1474) and served in Prince Bayezid's retinue; in 883 (1478) he was transferred to the sanjak governorship of Tokat, and when he died in Istanbul he was buried in the tomb of his father Kemal Pasha. The İbrâhim Bey whom Hüsameddin calls "the brother of Halîl and Süleyman Beys" was probably a brother of this Süleyman Çelebi; if so, Süleyman's son Şemseddîn Ahmed, the famous Kemalpaşazâde (1469-1534), was his nephew. The text does not state this identification outright; it is an inference.

Şemseddîn Ahmed first entered the military profession and took part in Bayezid II's campaigns as a sipahi of the six divisions, then moved to the learned class and became a judge, a kazasker, and from 1526 şeyhülislam. According to what Taşköprîzâde relates from him, he once saw Molla Lutfî, a madrasa professor at Filibe (Plovdiv) on thirty akçe, seated above the famous raider commander Evrenosoğlu Ahmed at a gathering of Grand Vizier Çandarlı İbrâhim Pasha; this led him to conclude that the standing of the ulema was higher than that of the beys, and to cross over to the learned class. His birthplace appears as Tokat in some sources and Edirne in others; it is also claimed that he was from Amasya, and this claim rests on Hüsameddin's Amasya Tarihi. In this entry Hüsameddin presents him as the "cousin" and son-in-law of İbrâhim Bey, son of Halîl. This may be read to mean that Şemseddîn Ahmed married in Amasya and strengthened his family ties with the beys of Amasya; the text gives no detail beyond that.

The text writes that the şeyhülislam's son İbrâhim Çelebi died after 954 and that he was among the judges and scholars. No information about this son, or about the later life of the first İbrâhim Bey after 890, could be found in any other source.
