He was from Amasya. He was a descendant of Âşık Paşa and the son of Tâceddîn Mehmed Çelebi, sheikh of the Mahmud Çelebi Zawiya in Amasya. He was the brother of Hamdullah Hamdi Çelebi, the divan secretary of Prince Sultan Mustafa, governor of Amasya. He studied in Amasya, became a madrasa professor, a judge, and a defterdar in the provinces. Then he went to Istanbul and, as Anatolian Defterdar, entered the company of the statesmen. After he was dismissed from office, in the month of Ramadan of the year 959 [1552] he endowed his properties as a waqf for the expenses of the school he had built in the Bostancıbaşı Quarter, and then died. The Lineage of Âşık Paşa and the Nefîszâdes
The long chain of descent in the text shows that the well-known Çelebi family of Amasya traced itself back to Baba İlyas and Âşık Paşa. Âşık Paşa was a grandson of Baba İlyas; he is reported to have been born in Amasya in 1271, to have been known for his work Garibnâme, and to have died in Kırşehir in 1332. One branch of the family, descending from Elvan Çelebi, rose in Amasya through posts such as waqf administration, madrasa teaching, judgeships and defterdarships. In the section Hüsameddin devotes to the lineage of Elvan Çelebi, these branches are listed in detail.
İbrâhim Çelebi, the subject of this entry, had a father, Tâceddîn Mehmed Çelebi, who is mentioned in the sources as a successor (halife) of Sheikh Habib Karamânî and as the author of the work Risâle-i Tâciye; he is recorded as entering the service of Sultan Selim I (Yavuz) in 1517. Among his brothers, Muhibbî Mehmed was known as a poet. His elder brother Hamdullah Hamdi Çelebi is reported to have been the divan secretary of Prince Mustafa, who was in the sanjak of Amasya, and also to have held a post in the administration of the Elvan Çelebi waqf.
A Point to Note
The famous poet of the same name, Hamdullah Hamdi (1449-1503), was a son of Akşemseddin and was not a descendant of Âşık Paşa. The Hamdullah Hamdi Çelebi whom Hüsameddin mentions was the secretary of Prince Mustafa, son of Suleiman the Magnificent; the two must not be confused.
No source other than Hüsameddin's information could be found about İbrâhim Çelebi's school and waqf in the Bostancıbaşı Quarter. The name Nefîszâde, from the same lineage, appears again in later entries together with the family of the calligrapher Nefeszâde İbrâhim Efendi.
