The Amasya Mevlevî Lodge
It is related that the first Mevlevî lodge in Amasya was built in 1314 by Alaeddin Ali Pervâne Bey. The records of the waqf were lost in 1661 and its contents were reconstructed from the accounts of those who had seen them. Mevlevism is mentioned as the third order to appear in the city, after the Rifâî and the Halvetî. Among the sheikhs, Sheikh Ömer Çelebi appears in 1567, and after him Sheikh İbrâhim Çelebi.
During İbrâhim Çelebi's time as sheikh, the event Hüsameddin calls the "Brigands' Incident" took place and the Mevlevî lodge burned in 1602. This date agrees with the 1011 [1602-03] in the book. The lodge was rebuilt in 1637 by the grand vizier Bayram Pasha; Bayram Pasha had also brought water to the city at his own expense. In the rebuilt lodge, İbrâhim Çelebi's son Mehmed Ârif Dede, then his son-in-law Mahmud Dede, Abdülkadir Dede and Alaeddin Dede served in turn as sheikh.
The Question of the Name
Hüsameddin gives the sheikh the name "Dede Çelebi"; in the Mevlevî tradition sheikhs could be called both "Dede" and "Çelebi." A study of Mevlevism states that the sheikh at the time of the brigand incident was İbrâhim Çelebi; it is very probable that this person is the same as the sheikh Hüsameddin mentions. No details could be found about Sheikh Mehmed Dede himself.
