Gelgiras and the Enderun

Gelgiras is the old name of the village of Karşıyaka, today attached to Merzifon; the village's name appears as Gelgiras or Gelgeras in the records of 1876 and 1928, later became Çatalkaya, and was changed to Karşıyaka in 2008. In Katip Çelebi's Cihannüma, Gelgiras, when the districts of Amasya are listed, is mentioned as a place with mosques, a madrasa and a bath. Hüsameddin too, listing the four administrative divisions of Merzifon, gives Zoğu, Gelgiras, Gümüştegin and Ilıcak. An explanation circulates that the village's name comes from the property received by Kiraz Hatun, daughter of Alıcık Noyan, when she married İzzeddin Mehmed-i Pervane, and that the name changed over time from Gelinkiraz to Gelgiras. This is of the nature of a local tradition.

"Enderûn" is a term describing the inner part of the fortress in Amasya; east of the Enderun Fortress lies the Nerkis quarter, to its south the Yeşilırmak, and to its north Mount Harşena. No reliable record could be found for the exact location and present state of the Enderûn Mosque. If the mosque name refers to a building inside the fortress, the preacher in the entry served in the oldest settled district of the city; this is an inference.
