In Modern English

He was the son of Hasan. When Sultan Bayezid II was governor of Amasya, he became ağa of the sekbans after Hâlid Ağa, that is, the officer responsible for order among the janissaries of Amasya; he died after 892 [1487]. Hâlid Ağazâde İbrâhim Ağa was also sekbanbaşı and commander of the janissaries in Amasya, and died after 896 [1490-91]. Both were men whose word carried weight and who had influence.

Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • sekbânlar ağası: commander of the sekban units

  • serdâr: commander of the janissaries in a given place
  • zî-nüfûz: influential, one whose word carries weight

Janissary and Sekban Commanders in Amasya

From 1451 the sekbans formed part of the janissary corps. The sekbanbaşı was counted the second commander after the ağa. It is written that the sekbanbaşıs ran the corps until the office of ağa was re-established under Selim I in 1515. In the provinces, the serdars dealt with the janissaries' affairs and their departure on campaign. For Amasya, one example of this arrangement in the following century is Çakaloğlu Hüseyin Ağa, who is mentioned as a janissary officer; it is also recorded that in 1731 a janissary brigand chief proclaimed himself a second Patrona in Amasya.

The entry has two sekbanbaşıs bearing the same name: İbrâhim Ağa, son of Hasan, and, coming after him, İbrâhim Ağa, son of Hâlid Ağa. The text does not say explicitly whether the second was the successor of the first; only that one died after 892 and the other after 896. The subject of this entry should not be confused with Hasan Ağazâde İbrâhim Ağa (6-81), described earlier; he too was a sekbanbaşı whose father's name was Hasan, but his death falls around 871. No details on Hâlid Ağa and these two İbrâhim Ağas were found in any other source.
