“Müddet-i ömründe zühd ü salâh u iffet ü felâh üzere olup nefs-i nefisine iştigâlde ve ebnâ-yı zamandan i’raz ü imtinâ’da nekâhat-ı aslî ve semâhat-ı fıtrî mübtegâsınca ve zekâ-yı tabî’i ve nekâ-yı cibilli müktezasınca ulûm-ı mütedâvilede müşâreketi olup akrân ve emsâlden tefevvuk eyledi.” Mahdûmu Alâeddîn Ali Çelebi ve hafîdi Muhyiddîn Mehmed Efendi kibâr-ı kudât ve ulemâdandır.

In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He was the son of Şamluoğlu Ali b. Ahmed, a master tanner (debbağ, a leather worker) who discovered the color navy blue. In the Waqf Deed of Mehmed Pasha he is written as Mevlânâ Tâceddîn İbrâhim Şâmlu, and in the Tabakât-ı Temîmî as "Tâceddîn İbrâhim bin el-üstâz el-Amâsî" [Tâceddîn İbrâhim, son of the Master of Amasya]. In the "Şakâyık" it is recorded that his father was a master tanner who discovered the color navy blue.

Having completed his education in Amasya under İbrîzâde Mevlânâ Muhyiddîn Çelebi, in Merzifon under Seydî Ahmed Kırımî, and in Istanbul under Hızırbeyzâde Mevlânâ Sinan Pasha, and having obtained candidacy for the professorship, he gave public lectures. While müderris of the Ak Madrasa in Ankara, in 880 [1475-76] he became tutor to Prince Sultan Abdullah, governor of Trabzon.

However, when his teacher Sinan Pasha was dismissed and imprisoned in 884 [1479-80], he too was removed from the tutorship and sent with fifteen akçe to the district of Çubuk-âbâd. In 886 [1481-82], at the accession of Sultan Bâyezîd, when his teacher returned and became vizier and nişancı for the second time, he became kadı of Ankara.

After being dismissed from the kadılık, on the death of his master İbrîzâde he moved in his place to the Hüseyniye Madrasa in Amasya, and around 900 [1494-95] to the professorship of the Hızır Pasha Madrasa; though retired, he passed to the hereafter in 909 [1503-04]. In the "Tercüme-i Şakâyık", Mecdî Mehmed Efendi says as follows:

"Throughout his life he was given to asceticism, righteousness, chastity and success; in occupying himself with his own soul and in keeping away from the people of his time, according to his true purity and inborn generosity, his natural intelligence and innate sincerity, he also had a share in the sciences taught, and surpassed his peers and his like."

His son Alâeddîn Ali Çelebi and his grandson Muhyiddîn Mehmed Efendi were among the great kadıs and scholars.

İbrâhim Şâmlu in the Şakâyık

The "Şakâyık" mentioned in the entry is Taşköprîzâde Ahmed Efendi's work on Ottoman scholars, eş-Şakâ'iku'n-Nu'mâniyye; the "Tercüme-i Şakâyık" is Mecdî Mehmed Efendi's Turkish translation of this work. Hüsameddin uses these two sources side by side with waqf records to establish the man's name and his father's trade. No other source was found in my searches on an Amasya tanner who discovered the color navy blue; this information is known only from Hüsameddin, citing the Şakâyık.

His teacher Sinan Pasha appears in the sources as Sinan Pasha son of Hızır Bey, or Hoca Sinan Pasha. According to some studies he was removed from the vizierate in 881 (1476-77) and imprisoned, was released at the pleading of the scholars, and, with Bayezid II's accession (886/1481), returned to Istanbul and regained the vizierate. Hüsameddin, however, gives the date of the dismissal and imprisonment as 884. The three-year difference shows that the two accounts attach the same event to different years; which is correct could not be settled in this research.

Şâmluzâde's life shows the path of a madrasa teacher whose career ran between Amasya, Merzifon, Istanbul and Ankara: a princely tutorship, dismissal, a fifteen-akçe post in a provincial district, and recovery when his teacher returned to the vizierate. This career, ending at the Hüseyniye Madrasa and the Hızır Pasha Madrasa in Amasya, also reflects how the city's network of ulema was passed from teachers to students at the end of the 15th century.
