The Ayas Ağa Mosque

The Ayas Ağa Complex, located in the quarter also known as Şamlar or Şâmlılar, consists of a mosque, a madrasa and a children's school. The founder of the complex is Ayas Ağa, one of the palace gate aghas of the time of Bayezid II. Hüsameddin reports that the complex, which has no inscription, was built in 900 [1494-95]. It is said that on its site there was earlier the Şamlar Mosque, a charitable work of the Danishmend emir Melik Gazi. The mosque is built of rubble stone and brick, square in plan and single-domed; the madrasa consists of nine cells enclosing the courtyard north of the mosque on the west and north, and is also called Küçük Kapı Ağası and Küçük Ağa. The mosque is open for worship today.

İbrâhim Efendi's death in 1147 and his son's relinquishing of the imamate to Hâfız Ali Efendi in 1156 show that the mosque was still functioning in the eighteenth century. No information on these persons was found in any source other than Hüsameddin. In one article the tekke around the same mosque is mentioned as being near the İlyas Ağa Mosque (Şamlar Mosque); the spelling "Ayas" and "İlyas" differs between sources.
