In Modern English

He was from Merzifon. He was the son of Kadızâde Ali Efendi. Rising in the circle of Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha, he became his siladar during his deputyship of the grand vizierate and his treasurer during his grand vizierate, and gained influence and prominence.

In 1095 [1683-84] he was sent to Merzifon and his property was confiscated. In 1099 [1687-88] he showed service and loyalty in the Emirler Incident; in 1101 [1689-90] he became Türkmen Ağası, and in 1103 [1691-92] cebecibaşı during the grand vizierate of Merzifonlu Hacı Ali Pasha.

When the Pasha was removed from office in Receb 1104 [1693], his adversaries found their chance. Because the services the poor man had rendered as Türkmen Ağası were presented as acts of oppression, he was executed at the end of Şevvâl 1105 [1694]. He had rendered considerable service in the Emirler and Türediler Incident.

Merzifon and Kara Mustafa Pasha

Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha was born in 1634-35 in the village of Marınca (today's Karamustafapaşa) in Merzifon; when his father, the timar-holding sipahi Oruç Bey, fell as a martyr at the siege of Baghdad he was orphaned at four and was brought up under the patronage of Köprülü Mehmed Bey, sanjak bey of Amasya. Made kaptanıderyâ under the grand vizierate of Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha, Kara Mustafa Pasha later became grand vizier and, after the defeat before Vienna, was executed on 25 December 1683. Hüsameddin's statement that İsmâil Ağa was sent to Merzifon in 1095 and his property confiscated falls in the same year as Kara Mustafa Pasha's execution; the link between them is an inference, and no direct record was read.

Merzifonlu Hacı Ali Pasha

The vizier Hüsameddin calls "Merzifonî Hacı Ali Pasha" appears in the sources also as Çalık Ali Pasha. He was from Merzifon and a man of Kara Mustafa Pasha's circle; he went on pilgrimage and gained the title Hacı, became sanjak bey of Chios in 1688, and in 1690 governor of Erzurum and then of Diyarbekir. He became grand vizier on 23 March 1692; because he pursued a policy of economic austerity in trying to close the treasury's deficit, he was subjected to harsh criticism by his political rivals. When he refused the Sultan's wish to dismiss the defterdar Canibi Ahmed he left office on 17 March 1693. Hüsameddin's records "cebecibaşı in 1103 during his grand vizierate" and "his removal in Receb 1104" match these dates. Hacı Ali Pasha was not punished but given a governorship, spent the rest of his life in Bursa and in Candia in Crete, and died there in 1698. The record that İsmâil Ağa's adversaries moved after the Pasha's dismissal is consistent with the political rivalry described in these sources; but no record directly connected with İsmâil Ağa's execution was read.
