Who Is a Muîd
The muîdship Hüsameddin mentions was carried on in the same family for four generations: İsmâil Efendi, pupil of Çelebizâde Ömer Efendi, his son Halil, the latter's son Seyyid Hasan and Hasan's son Hâfız Mehmed. For this reason the family came to be called "Muîdzâdes". A muîd is the assistant who repeats the müderris's lesson to the students in the madrasa; Hasan Efendi's withdrawal from the post in 1188 in favour of his son shows that the post was passed on within the family.
The Mehmed Pasha Madrasa
The Mehmed Pasha Madrasa, where the muîdship was held, is part of the complex in the Mehmed Pasha quarter near the Yeşilırmak in Amasya. The complex was built by Hızır Paşazâde Mehmed Pasha (d. 900/1495), vizier of Bayezid II and tutor (lala) of Prince Ahmed; according to the mosque's inscription its construction was completed in Muharrem 891 (January 1486). The complex comprised a mosque, madrasa, imaret, tomb, tabhâne, zaviye, fountain and cemetery. Only the mosque, the side wings attached to it and the tomb have survived; the madrasa and the imaret burned down and are lost. The building in which the muîds Hüsameddin mentions served therefore no longer exists. The mosque and tomb were damaged in the 1939 earthquake and repaired by the General Directorate of Foundations.
